Dysfunctional family fun blooms in "Petunia";
A Gay Games planner explicates Olympic politics;
Affirmations and accusations compete at the UN General Assembly,
a Costa Rican judge closes an "accidental" marriage equality loophole
but a New Jersey judge slams civil unions inequality, international
protests boil over an Italian pasta king's homophobia, and more news

-
In "NewsWrap": 11 countries and the European Union reaffirm their
support for LGBT rights during the 68th session of the United Nations
General Assembly in New York, but Gambian President Yahya Jammeh uses
his address to the General Assembly to call gays & lesbians one of
the three "biggest threats to human existence," while Bangladesh rejects
a recommendation by the U.N. Human Rights Council to abolish its
colonial-era sodomy law… a family court judge in Costa Rica refuses to
allow a gay couple to register as married even though legislators
"accidentally" removed gender references in the country's marriage laws
in July, but a Superior Court judge in New Jersey orders civil marriage
opened to same-gender couples in the U.S. state on October 21st… CEO
Guido Barilla gets his global pasta company in hot water by telling an
Italian radio audience that their advertising will never feature a gay
couple because "we like the traditional family," and "if gays don't like
it they can buy another brand"; Amnesty International joins a chorus of
global human rights groups criticizing the International Olympic
Committee for being "completely satisfied" with Russian assurances that
its "no promo homo" law won't put LGBT athletes or visitors to Sochi in
harms way… and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG
GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by NATALIE
PEOPLES and CHARLIE BAUER).

- As the eyes of the international
sporting world look nervously toward February's Winter Olympics in
Sochi, LGBT athletes have their sites set on an event that's farther
into the future -- in more ways than one. Tense repression under Russian
law is expected to surround the traditional Games, but the 2014 GAY
GAMES in August promise a much more progressive environment. SHAMEY
CRAMER is the Officer of Ceremonies for the Federation of Gay Games. He
chats with "This Way Out" correspondent DIXIE TREICHEL [from "Fresh
Fruit" on KFAI-FM/Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota] about the Olympic
politics of both competitions (with outro music from "Everyone Is Gay"
by A GREAT BIG WORLD).

- A gay celibate, a sex
addict, a newlywed with a cheating wife, a pot-smoking therapist -- and
they're all in one family! No wonder our entertainment correspondent
STEVE PRIDE loves "PETUNIA" (with clips from the film featuring TOBIAS
SEGAL, DAVID RASCHE, CHRISTINE LAHTI and MICHAEL URIE, and comments by
co-writer/director ASH CHRISTIAN).
