"THIS WAY OUT: the international lesbian & gay radio magazine
Program #1,090 - distributed 2/16/09
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
Scenes from life of the absurd with playwright-who's-gay Edward Albee;
Brisbane's Archbishop damns welcoming as sin at St. Mary's;
Moscow gays court presidential intervention, Iranian lesbigay refugees
find safety in the UK and Canada, the US Congress gets a bill to unite
binational couples, Freedom to Marry Week spreads love across America,
New Zealand's PM boogies with drag queens, and more global LGBT news
- In "NewsWrap": Moscow Pride sues Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in
the European Court of Human Rights for failing to intervene in their
rights dispute with Mayor Yuri Luzhkov... an Iranian lesbian wins
asylum in the U.K., and a gay male Iranian couple finds refuge in
Canada... a bill to allow American gays and lesbians to sponsor their
foreign partners for residency in the country is again introduced in
Congress, while same-gender couples and their supporters mark the
annual Freedom to Marry Week with a variety of actions across the U.S.,
and Hawai'i's House of Representatives passes a civil unions bill...
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key boogies with drag queens at
Auckland's 10th annual Big Gay Out... and more LGBT news from around
the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported
this week by RICK
WATTS and GREG GORDON).
- LGBT Catholics and their liberal compatriots have had plenty of bad
news in recent weeks, including Pope Benedict XVI's Christmas message
comparing lesbigay equality and gender rights to environmental
degradation, the pontiff revoking the excommunication of an
illegitimately ordained bishop who denies that there was a Holocaust,
and promoting a priest who proclaimed that Hurricane Katrina was divine
retribution on LGBT-friendly New Orleans. Now the spotlight has fallen
on the SOUTH BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA congregation of ST. MARY'S, where
Archbishop John Bathersby has fired progressive parish priest Peter
Kennedy. Among Father Kennedy's "sins" are allowing lay people --
including women -- to preach, and cultivating a community that openly
welcomes lesbians and gays. "This Way Out" correspondent MARK JEFFERY
(from "Queer Radio"/4ZZZ-FM/Brisbane, with transmittal thanks to JOHN
FRAME) commiserated with St. Mary's Community Council Gay and Lesbian
Representative VINCE KNAUTH (with intro/outro music from "Show Me"
performed by CHRISTIAN ANDREASON).
- Coming up with a brief but clever introduction for EDWARD ALBEE is no
doubt a fool's errand. America's leading Pulitzer Prize and Tony
Award-winning playwright provocateur, author of "The Zoo Story," "Who's
Afraid of Virginia Woolf," and so many others, calls his plays "a stand
against the fiction that everything in this slipping land of ours is
peach
y-keen." Albee had a delightful conversation about being gay –
not to mention art, life and death - with "This Way Out" correspondents
DIXIE TREICHEL and JOHN TOWNSEND (from "Fresh Fruit" on
KFAI-FM/Minneapolis-St. Paul).
