- In "NewsWrap": The 200,000-member World Psychiatric Association calls for the decriminalization of private consensual adult same-gender sex, the banning of so-called "conversion therapy", and the passage of anti-LGBT hate crime laws … an Equality Festival scheduled for the Ukrainian tourist city of Lviv is cancelled after homophobic thugs surround the hotel venue shouting "kill kill kill" … U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA’s historic visit to Cuba includes the promotion of LGBT rights [with a brief excerpt from his speech in Havana], and a reading by out Obama inaugural Cuban-American poet RICHARD BLANCO [with a brief excerpt]; North Carolina’s dominant Republicans pass what may be the worst anti-LGBT laws in recent memory, while far right Republican Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signs a bill allowing student groups to deny membership to individuals they don’t like based on "sincerely held religious belief" … progressive Planting Peace activists raise a rainbow flag in Antarctica and declare it to be the world’s first LGBT-friendly continent … and more global LGBT news (produced by STEVE PRIDE, written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by JOHN DYER V and SARAH SWEENEY).
- When CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA’s City Council added LGBT people to its anti-discrimination protections, it so alarmed the state’s Republican-dominated legislature and Republican Governor Pat McCrory that they forced taxpayers to finance a special session this week to overturn it before it could take effect on April 1st. They even went so far as to forbid any other local government from enacting laws that don’t mirror what’s already in state law. North Carolina offers no anti-bias protections for LGBT people. The new legislation also bans transgender people from using the public facilities that correspond to their gender identity. McCrory signed the package of bills into law within hours of passage on March 24th. Scorn and condemnation from the business sector, professional sports associations, and other high-profile groups and individuals soon followed. "BuzzFeed’s" DOMINIC HOLDEN explored the implications of the new laws on the March 24th edition of the "PBS News Hour"; CHARLOTTE MAYOR JENNIFER ROBERTS discussed what lies ahead for her city, and news anchor CHRIS HAYES comments on the hateful legislation on his "All In" MSNBC program; ends with a faux commercial for North Carolina tourism by the folks at FUNNY OR DIE.
- The Caribbean HIV/AIDS Partnership, or CHAP, is tackling the tough job of providing services to LGBTQI people in a largely hostile region, and no place is more difficult than the island of DOMINICA. Coordinating Director of CHAP Dominica SYLVESTER BAPTISTE talks about gay life and activism in his homeland with This Way Out correspondent VASH BODDIE (with brief intro music from "Get Up, Stand Up" by BOB MARLEY, and production assistance by STEVE PRIDE).====================================================================="This Way Out" is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit as OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.), and has been supported by grants from the Kicking Assets Fund of the Tides Foundation, the Yavanna Foundation, a generous bequest by the estate of Christopher David Trentham, voluntary PROGRAM ACQUISITION PAYMENTS FROM YOU, OUR STATIONS, and by tax-deductible donations from our listeners. Please visit www.thiswayout.org to contribute via PayPal.>Thank you for your financial support to keep our program on the air!<------------------------------------------------------------------On the air since April 1988, "This Way Out" is the multi-award-winning internationally distributed weekly LGBT radio newsmagazine. The program currently airs on more than 200 local community radio stations around the world, is globally distributed at www.radio4all.net, www.indymedia.org, to Pacifica Radio station affiliates in North America via Audioport, and in Australia via the Community Radio Network.
