Tarnished Tar Heels + more global LGBT news!= = = = => Beginning our 28th year on the air this week! <= = = = =Please consider signing up for regular monthly PayPal donations @ thiswayout.org starting @ just $10!THIS WAY OUTthe international LGBT radio magazineProgram #1,462, distributed 04/04/16(produced and hosted this week by Lucia Chappelle and Greg Gordon)Tar Heel toilets overflow with injustice;Saudis threaten death for queer online liaisons, marriage equalityfinally comes to Greenland, Mississippi’s last-in-the nation adoptionban bombs in US federal court but state lawmakers okay a draconian newanti-LGBT bill, Chinese film censors clear a gay love story for the bigscreen, PostNord proudly issues rainbow stamps of approval, more news!
- In "NewsWrap": Saudi Arabia judicial officials begin calling for the death penalty for same-gender sex to counter the Internet’s growing pro-gay influence, but marriage equality finally comes to Greenland … a U.S. federal judge overturns Mississippi’s adoptions ban, the last state in the union to still have the anti-gay law on its books, but the Mississippi legislature sends a draconian anti-queer bill to GOP Governor Phil Bryant which many believe he’ll sign, while Virginia’s Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe vetoes a GOP-approved "religious freedom" bill in his Commonwealth … a French-Chinese gay love story passes China’s censors and is set to become the first queer-content film to screen in movie houses across the most populous nation on earth … the postal service jointly operated by Sweden and Denmark announces it will be issuing rainbow flag stamps to mark this year’s Pride celebrations … and more LGBT news from around the world (produced by STEVE PRIDE, written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by CAROLE MEYERS & MICHAEL LEBEAU).
- Perhaps NORTH CAROLINA Republicans have very short attention spans – they seemed to have forgotten what happened in Indiana precisely a year ago – or they’re simply more interested in rolling back LGBT rights and preventing imaginary crime than in doing something constructive for their constituents. Governor Pat McCrory signed proposals passed by the GOP-dominant legislature on March 24th that revoked a simple anti-bias ordinance in the city of Charlotte that included LGBT people, and banned other local governments from passing similar laws that protect sexual and gender minorities. The new law also requires transgender people to use the gender-segregated facilities in public buildings and school campuses (such as locker rooms and bathrooms) that correspond to their birth gender rather than the gender with which they identify. Cue the outrage! (Reported by LUCIA CHAPPELLE and GREG GORDON, and starting with a one-year-ago INDIANA backlash flashback; then comments this week by North Carolina GOVERNOR PAT McCRORY defending the law; Equality North Carolina’s CHRIS SRGO and trans-man JOAQUÍN CARCAÑO, one of the plaintiffs, announcing a lawsuit challenging its constitutionality; state ATTORNEY GENERAL ROY COOPER explaining why he refuses to defend the law in court; LIEUTENTANT GOVERNOR DAN FOREST defending the law and dissing Cooper; brief excerpts from comments about the lawsuit by trans-man and ACLU legal eagle CHASE STRANGIO with MSNBC’s RACHEL MADDOW; Equality North Carolina’s CRYSTAL RICHARDSON chatting with our ABBY DEES about the lawsuit’s prospects; the Human Rights Campaign’s CHAD GRIFFIN challenging Governor McCrory to produce the list of major business leaders he claims support the law; street sounds from CHAPEL HILL protests of the anti-LGBT legislation; and music by CROSBY STILLS NASH & YOUNG, THE KNICKERBOCKERS, and the VITAMIN STRING QUARTET).====================================================================="This Way Out" is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit as OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.), and has been supported by grants from the Kicking Assets Fund of the Tides Foundation, the Yavanna Foundation, a generous bequest by the estate of Christopher David Trentham, voluntary PROGRAM ACQUISITION PAYMENTS FROM YOU, OUR STATIONS, and by tax-deductible donations from our listeners. Please visit www.thiswayout.org to contribute via PayPal.>Thank you for your financial support to keep our program on the air!<------------------------------------------------------------------On the air since April 1988, "This Way Out" is the multi-award-winning internationally distributed weekly LGBT radio newsmagazine. The program currently airs on more than 200 local community radio stations around the world, is globally distributed at www.radio4all.net, www.indymedia.org, to Pacifica Radio station affiliates in North America via Audioport, and in Australia via the Community Radio Network.
