-
In "NewsWrap": Nervous about the impending 25th anniversary of the
military's democracy-crushing Tiananmen Square action, Chinese
authorities detain 9 gay activists who were preparing to lead a Beijing
seminar critically examining "civil society and the state", while a new
marriage equality lobbying group is born in Taiwan, and lesbian and gay
couples race to the altar in Arkansas as it becomes the latest of the
United States to have its same-gender civil marriage ban declared
unconstitutional, the U.S. Postal Service prepares to issue a first
class "forever" stamp honoring trailblazing gay politician Harvey Milk,
while international demand for Tom of Finland's homoerotic images on a
series of Finnish first class stamps crashes the website selling them…
and more LGBT news from around the world (produced by STEVE PRIDE,
written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by WENZEL JONES &
CHRISANNE EASTWOOD) + BREAKING NEWS: the U.S. NFL's first out gay player
Michael Sam is a Ram (reported by GREG GORDON with comments by MICHAEL
SAM and ST. LOUIS RAMS COO KEVIN DEMOFF).

- If the ruler of the
tiny Southeast Asian nation of BRUNEI were to visit Los Angeles, he
might find that he has his BEVERLY HILLS HOTEL all to himself. Ever
since Sultan Hassnal Bokiah gave the country's new Sharia-inspired penal
code his personal blessing, a star-studded boycott has been gaining
momentum against the Dorchester Collection luxury hotels he owns.
Feminist Majority President ELEANOR SMEAL, comedian JAY LENO, United
Farm Workers co-founder DOLORES HUERTA and L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center
CEO LORRI JEAN were among the speakers at a protest demonstration on
May 5th outside the hotel.

- At a wonderfully queer wedding of
theater and television in LOS ANGELES, "This Way Out's" CHRISANNE
EASTWOOD and producer STEVE PRIDE were on hand to celebrate the 2014
Vibrant Voices Awards handed out by the venerable CELEBRATION THEATRE
(with intro/outro music from the "Golden Girls" TV theme and comments by
Celebration Theatre Co-Artistic Director MICHAEL A. SHEPPERD, original
Supreme MARY WILSON, former "Golden Girls" writer STAN ZIMMERMAN, and
former "Golden Girl" BETTY WHITE with her current "Hot In Cleveland"
co-stars WENDIE MALICK, JANE LEEVES, and VALERIE BERTINELLI).

-
Recalling Israeli transwoman Dana International's stunning 1998
victory, the hugely popular EUROVISION SONG CONTEST is no stranger to
gender controversy. With regional tensions at a boiling point and
homophobic laws on the rise in Eastern Europe, the appearance of
AUSTRIA's CONCHITA WURST in the annual competition set off a wave of
protests before the sensational finale. Conchita is a full-on drag queen
-- with a full beard -- whose performance of "RISE LIKE A PHOENIX" drew
charges of "Western decadence" from anti-LGBT politicians. When her
turn came, Conchita's performance set off as many fireworks on stage as
her participation had ignited in the press, and she claimed more than a
personal victory.
