Nigeria's anti-gay law flogs offenders and fuels global protests;
"Behind the Queens" unveils Vancouver's drag scene;
Satirist Stephen Colbert crowns a King;
"Unnatural" arrests panic Zambia, Cameroon and Uganda, ambiguity
attends the Pope's new civil unions spin, the Dalai Lama is "okay"
with marriage equality, and more global LGBT news
-
In "NewsWrap": Four young men convicted of violating Nigeria's new
horrendously-oppressive anti-gay laws are publically whipped and could
face more violence in prison… trial begins for 2 men in Zambia forced to
undergo anal probes to "prove" their homosexuality, 4 lesbians are
reportedly arrested in Cameroon, and a Ugandan blog reports that a
lesbian has been evicted from her home, despite being a "wonderful"
tenant, because of that country's new Anti-Homosexuality Law… ambiguity
surrounds comments attributed to Roman Catholic Pope Francis that seemed
to suggest that the Church might be open to civil unions for
same-gender couples, while exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader, the DALAI
LAMA, tells "LARRY KING NOW" that marriage equality is "okay" [with a
brief excerpt from the interview airing this week]… a landmark ruling in
Lebanon sanctions the relationship of a transgender woman and a man…200
guests cheer what may be the first public wedding of a gay male couple
in Myanmar (Burma)… U.S. marriage equality makes news in Colorado,
Wyoming, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky [includes comments by KENTUCKY
ATTORNEY GENERAL JACK CONWAY]… and more LGBT news from around the world
(produced by STEVE PRIDE, written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week
by TANYA KANE-PARRY & CHRISTOPHER GAAL).
- Activists from
around the world are not taking Africa's epidemic of homophobic laws
sitting down. A "Global Day of Action" to protest NIGERIA's new law was
held on March 7th in cities including Stockholm, Brussels, Washington,
D.C., and London. LGBT Africans and their allies in NEW YORK CITY
demonstrated in front the Nigerian Embassy, where they encouraged more
people in the U.S. to take a stronger stand. Some of the protesters were
arrested. Journalist KELLY COGSWELL and filmmaker HARRIET HIRSHORN
shared this on-scene report (with intro/outro music from the Nigerian
National Anthem "Arise Oh Compatriots”).
- Drag is just not what
it used to be – at least not in VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA. The
resurgence of this evolving art form has forged strong bonds between the
performers and their community, and reminded many of its importance.
Professional drag performers JAYLENE TYME, STEVEN CARTY & ANTHONY
CASEY are featured in a documentary by ZACK SINGER & DEBOARH POWER
that pulls back the curtain for a look at a world that may be
unfamiliar. It's called "BEHIND THE QUEENS”.

Far right IOWA REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN STEVE KING is no stranger to
outrageous theories. His comments on Arizona's vetoed "Religious Freedom
Bill" got a "thinkiness" review from Comedy Central's STEPHEN COLBERT
(intro'd by "The Colbert Report Theme Song" performed by CHEAP TRICK).
