Obama's order, Holder's vow, Thorpe's outing, Sam's win,
and Tutu's heaven;
HIV/AIDS researchers and activists become victims of the Ukraine-
Russia conflict, U.S. judges consider marriage equality in Oklahoma,
Florida, Utah and Colorado, Croatian couples win almost-equality,
Malawi cuts costs by ignoring same-gender sex, and more LGBT news

-
In "NewsWrap": Renowned Dutch HIV/AIDS researcher/activist Joep Lange
and at least a few fellow scientists/activists traveling to the annual
International AIDS Conference in Melbourne perish in the downing of
Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine… the 10th U.S. Circuit
Court of Appeals overturns Oklahoma's ban on civil marriage for
same-gender couples, a circuit court judge declares Florida's ban
unconstitutional, the U.S. Supreme Court decides not to force Utah to
recognize the marriages of more than a thousand lesbian and gay couples
who legally wed in the state during the brief time that was possible,
and Colorado's Supreme Court orders the Denver County clerk to stop
issuing marriage licenses to same-gender couples, but doesn’t stop
fellow rogue clerks in Boulder and Pueblo counties from continuing to do
so; Croatian lawmakers overwhelmingly approve a bill to create
marriage-like but less-than-equal "life partnerships" for gay and
lesbian couples; Malawi's Justice Minister tell a U.N. human rights
panel that her government has told police to stop arresting gay people,
who can be and have been punished by up to 14 years in prison at hard
labor -- but financial constraints seem to have been the practical
motivation… Singapore's National Library Board takes heat for ordering
the removal and destruction of all copies of the true-life penguin story
"And Tango Makes Three" and two other LGBT-themed children's books
[with brief comments by "Tango" co-author JUSTIN RICHARDSON]… and more
LGBT news from around the world (produced by STEVE PRIDE, written by
GREG GORDON, and reported this week by MICHAEL LEBEAU and SARAH
SWEENEY).

- On July 21st U.S. PRESIDENT BARAK OBAMA made good on
his Pride Month promise to issue executive orders adding federal
anti-bias employment protections for LGBT people (an excerpt from Mr.
Obama's remarks during the official Pride reception at the White House
on June 30th, followed by details of the executive order); meanwhile,
U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC HOLDER talked with PIERRE THOMAS on ABC-TV's
"This Week" about the Obama administration's plan if and whenever a
marriage equality case reaches the U.S. Supreme Court.

- There
were two main events on the coming out scorecard this week. After years
of questions, AUSTRALIAN Olympic swimmer IAN THORPE finally took the
plunge during a national TV interview with British broadcaster SIR
MICHAEL PARKINSON [hear an excerpt]; also this week, newly minted U.S.
NFL football sensation and St. Louis Rams rookie MICHAEL SAM was gay
visibility's most valuable player when he accepted the ESPN television
network's Arthur Ashe Courage Award (with intro music from "Olympic
Fanfare and Theme" and outro music from "Summon the Heroes", each
performed by JOHN WILLIAMS and the BOSTON POPS ORCHESTRA).

- With
the renewed wave of official and violent homophobia sweeping across the
African continent, Russia and many other parts of the world, SOUTH
AFRICA's preeminent representative of reconciliation and Nobel Prize
winner ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU cannot be silent. He spoke out against
homophobia during an NBC-TV News interview with ANN CURRY (with
intro/outro music from "Spirit In The Sky" by NORMAN GREENBAUM).
