(hosted by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
PureLand sings out as "the girls they are";
A British suffragist and composer is remembered in a "Rainbow Minute";
India's top court affirms trans-people, Malta bans trans bias and okays
civil unions, Ethiopia eschews Africa's trending homophobia while
Zimbabwe's Mugabe reinforces it, new laws in Brunei punish consensual
adult gay sex with death by stoning, and more global LGBT news
-
In "NewsWrap": India's High Court declares trans-people to be a third
gender entitled to rights, protections, and government benefits, while
the conviction and 35-year prison sentence for Wiki-leaking U.S. Army
Private Chelsea Manning (formerly Bradley) are upheld, sending her case
to a military appeals court, and Malta lawmakers protect transgender
people from discrimination, and create marriage-like civil unions for
same-gender couples that include adoption rights… Ethiopia's government
resists calls for harsher anti-gay laws than already exist, so a large
church groups-organized anti-gay march in Addis Ababa is cancelled, but
Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe calls gays and lesbians "inhuman" and
threatens to kick pro-gay foreign diplomats out of the country… Utah's
Attorney General asks the state Supreme Court to stop same-gender
couples who legally married during the brief few days that they could
from getting second parent adoption approval… and more LGBT news from
around the world (produced by STEVE PRIDE, written by GREG GORDON, and
reported this week by SARAH SWEENEY and RYAN PEST).
- "ETHYL
SMYTH, ENGLISH COMPOSER AND SUFFRAGIST" is remembered in this "RAINBOW
MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR and BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in
Richmond, Virginia and read by KAREN BURNS).
- A blind, lesbian
opera singer is pretty unique, but LAURIE RUBIN and her professional and
life partner JENNY TAIRA are taking on another musical genre. As
PURELAND, the duo is exploring pop music with a message. They discussed
their new direction for the first time with "This Way Out" correspondent
ABBY DEES (with an excerpt from their new single, "THE GIRL I AM", and a
live in-studio performance of "NOSE JOB").
