(hosted by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
A fond farewell to the "out"-going Lord Mayor of Bristol;
A peek between the 1920s Paris pages of "The Last Nude";
"Dykes" take Pride in their first Long Beach march;
Britain's Commons makes marriage equality the Lords' work, Australia's
former P.M. surprisingly calls for parity, Puerto Rico passes LGBT
anti-bias protections, and more global LGBT news
-
In "NewsWrap": A lopsided approval in its third and final reading in
the British House of Commons sends the "Marriage (Same Sex Couples)
Bill" for England and Wales to the House of Lords, while Nevada's
Assembly advances a bill already passed in the Senate to repeal the U.S.
state's 2002 voter-approved constitutional ban and open civil marriage
to same-gender couples, as former Australian P.M. and current M.P. Kevin
Rudd surprises many with his blog posting in support of secular
marriage equality… Puerto Rico's House joins its Senate to approve a
bill banning bias based on sexual orientation and gender identity in
employment, housing and government services… several U.S. advocacy
groups criticize Democrats for throwing same-gender couples under the
bus because they believed including rights for them would scuttle
immigration reform legislation… the Boy Scouts of America decides to
welcome openly gay members, but will kick them out when they turn 18 if
they want to be scout leaders [JESS BURNS of "Free Speech Radio News"
reports/www.fsrn.org]... and more LGBT news from around the world
(written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week
by SARAH SWEENEY and GARY SHAW).
- The south-of-Los Angeles city
of LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA is home to a flourishing LGBT bedroom
community that has paraded its Pride for 30 years. But a related "Dyke
March" had never been part of the festivities – until this year. "This
Way Out" correspondent ZAMNÁ ÁVILA was there for the herstory-making
procession.
- An artful novel took "This Way Out's" "Queer Life
and Literature" commentator JANET MASON back to a different time and a
different place (she peeks between the pages of ELLIS AVERY's "THE LAST
NUDE", the 2013 American Library Association 2013 Barbara Gittings Literature Award winner set in 1920s Paris).
-
A new highlight was added to the storied history of BRISTOL when PETER
MAIN became the BRITISH city's first openly gay Lord Mayor. His yearlong
ceremonial post ended earlier this month, and MARY MILTON of BCFM's
"ShoutOut" show attended the farewell festivities at Mansion House.
