I love that you cover as many aspects of someone's career that you can - from recordings to photos. I'm currently doing research for a book about women's music and Gladys is one of our foremothers. You're making it easy for me. I only have to go to your site to read about so many of the lesbian musicians who came before us. The vote was 400 in favour to 175 against, to give the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill a second reading as a "landmark" in the fight for equality. It will take months to go through Parliament but it now looks almost certain that it will become law. Once the law comes into force, gay people will able to get married in churches which 'opt in' to gay marriage. Those with civil partnerships will be able to 'upgrade' to marriage if they so wish. http://www.stonewall.org.uk/media/current_releases/8461.asp An historic day! Ontario's Kathleen Wynne becomes Canada's first female and first "out" provincial premier, while a small Canadian study finds that "out" gay and bisexual men are generally happier than their heterosexual peers... the once dead "Don't Say Gay Bill" is resurrected in the Tennessee legislature... San Francisco's Twin Peaks Tavern scales new heights... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by VASH BODDIE and MICHAEL LEBEAU). - While important battles certainly remain to be won, the long moral arc of the universe does finally seem to be bending towards justice for the LGBT rights movement in the U.S. Just this week, marriage equality continued on the march in Illinois and Hawai'i. A ban on equality stalled in Indiana, and church groups in Omaha, Nebraska were unable to gather enough petition signatures to repeal that city's new LGBT anti-bias bill. Many people are also citing word this week that the venerable Boy Scouts of America may drop its national policy banning openly gay leaders and scouts ? although reports suggest that the organization will still allow local chapters, many of whom are sponsored by Mormon and Roman Catholic church groups, to maintain the discriminatory policy. The progressive trend was nevertheless noted this week in "Gaywatch ? Unprecedented Penetration Edition" on Comedy Central's "THE DAILY SHOW with JON STEWART" (includes comments by FRANK S. PAGE, President of the Southern Baptist Convention, and Baltimore Ravens linebacker BRENDON AYABANDEJO). [www.thedailyshow.com] - There's a little super hero in all of us, and there's a special event for LGBT people to celebrate the history, and the future, of queer comics. BENT CON has been bringing artists, writers, gamers, actors and producers together to explore all facets of the art form for three years now. "This Way Out" correspondent ANGELA BROOKS was in Burbank, California for the most recent gathering (with comments by JUSTIN HALL; ABRAHAM LEE and P.K. EISELT from Minus Zero Productions; MICHAEL DERRY; ASTRID LYDIA HOHANSEN; and ZAN CHRISTIANSEN; and with intro music from the unreleased "Superheroes Can't Be Gay" from a skit performed on the Norwegian TV series "Collective", and outro music from "Superhero" performed by CANDYE KANE). Thankfully an owner-financed contract. Which means we all were just able to walk away. Long story, always is, but all in all ok. That brings an end to our Roanoke period. Not sure what to expect in B'ham. Kind of exciting. Will be different and nice to have family close. Several opportunities, so I know change will be. And not sad to say, time and ready for that too. So be back in a few from B'ham! Oh and obvioulsy the OutVoice Top Ten Song Chart for January will post late. Not awful late, but late. Australian Football League pros proudly march for the first time in Melbourne's annual Pride parade, while in India an estimated two thousand people attend the fifth Queer Azaadi Mumbai Pride Parade, and as "The Hindu" reported, LGBT people "came out into the open" for Hyderabad's first... the rainbow flag flies during Britain's LGBT History Month over Cambridge Guildhall... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by PAMELA BROOKS and WENZEL JONES). - Six long hours of debate in BRITAIN's House of Commons preceded the overwhelming victory of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill on February 5th. No one gave a more impassioned argument for LGBT civil rights than black Labour M.P. DAVID LAMMY (excerpts produced by LUCIA CHAPPELLE). - A NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE Super Bowl champ used his bully pulpit this week to push for LGBT equality. It was the same week that the BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA was expected to announce a change in its ban on openly gay scouts and troop leaders. That now won?t happen until May. And not so long ago, mainstream media reporters felt duty-bound to include the comments of at least one homophobe in any discussion of LGBT issues for what they called ?balance?. But they?re now sharply challenging those comments ? something they rarely did in the past. The unexpected intersection of the Boy Scouts of America and the National Football League this week was also marked by the continuing emergence of eloquently vocal ?allies?. For example, and again just this week: CNN anchor CAROL COSTELLO grills Family Research Council Senior Fellow for Policy Studies PETER SPRIGG; (Out) CNN anchor DON LEMON talks with Super Bowl Champion Raven BRENDON AYANBADEJO; (Out) MSNBC anchor THOMAS ROBERTS chats with Minnesota Vikings kicker CHRIS KLUWE; former Eagle Scout and 2-Iowa-moms-raised ZACH WAHLS debates Ethics and Public Policy Center President ED WHALEN about the Boy Scouts with CNN anchor RANDI KAYE; CNN anchor SOLEDAD O'BRIEN challenges Family Research Council President TONY PERKINS; and BRENDON AYANBADEJO returns with a final word sponsored by the Respect for Marriage Coalition. France's National Assembly formally passes a bill to open civil marriage and extend adoption rights to same-gender couples... the Illinois Senate passes a marriage equality bill, while Oregon United for Marriage launches a signature-gathering campaign to qualify a November 2014 marriage equality ballot measure, but a bill to open civil marriage to lesbian and gay couples dies in the Hawai'i House, although the Colorado Senate passes a civil unions bill for same-gender couples... gay and lesbian couples try to get marriage licenses in Thailand's "Town of Love", while legislative hearings in Bangkok consider a marriage-like civil partnership proposal... topless feminist activists chant "no more homophobe" inside Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral to celebrate Roman Catholic Pope Benedict XVI's surprise resignation... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by GARY SHAW and NATALIE PEOPLES). - February is LGBT History Month in many parts of the world, and the British city of BRISTOL is doing it up in grand style this year. Numerous events include a new education project and a major exhibition at M Shed, the city's unique museum that reflects the stories of Bristol locals and visitors throughout history. The excitement was just beginning when MARY MILTON of BCFM's "ShoutOut" programme sent us this report (featuring comments by exhibition visitors, and elected Bristol Mayor GEORGE FERGUSON; openly gay Lord Mayor PETER MAIN; Cabinet Member for Children and Young People CLARE CAMPION-SMITH; prominent playwright NEIL BARTLETT; award-winning "out" trans writer CHERYL MORGAN; and M-Shed's Curator of Public History CATHERINE LITTLEJOHNS). - KATIE COOK and MAGGIE YOUNG have been sending "audio postcards" to "This Way Out" from their worldwide road-trip to find LGBT people for a documentary film. A few weeks ago we shared their first dispatch from MONGOLIA. What they discovered there just couldn't be contained in one communiqu?, so we re-join the "SAPPHIC NOMADS" as they continue their visit with the descendants of Genghis Khan (with comments by OTGONBAATAR TSEDENDEMBEREL, Executive Director and co-founder of the LGBT Centre of Mongolia; ANARAA NYAMDORJ, LGBT Centre of Mongolia co-founder and co-owner of the only LGBT bar in the country, 100%; and with indigenous on-scene music) [www.nomaddocumentary.com]. **************************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.), and is supported by a grant from the Yavanna Foundation, and donations from our generous listener-supporters. 'Tis our "Queer Life & Literature" commentator JANET MASON turning the pages of "SHAKESQUEER: A QUEER COMPANION TO THE COMPLETE WORKS OF SHAKESPEARE" (edited by Madhavi Menon for Duke University Press). - The liberated life of "U.K. PIONEER ALLAN HORSFALL" is celebrated in a "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by TOM MILLER). - High school senior Carson Phillips needs to bolster his college application. So the outcast literary journal editor uses extortion to turn the most popular students into contributors. Carson's plan is abruptly zapped in "STRUCK BY LIGHTNING", however, which bears a passing resemblance to the life of its Executive Producer, screenwriter and star CHRIS COLFER -- as our Entertainment Correspondent STEVE PRIDE discovered (with Colfer comments and clips from the film).
