discusses the perils of assimilation and "The End of San Francisco"

- 10 Years of U.S. marriage equality: from "NewsWrap" on the "This Way
Out" program of 11/24/03, anchored by CINDY FRIEDMAN & JON BEAUPRÉ: a
review of the historic "Goodridge versus Department Of Public Health"
ruling announced on November 18th by the MASSACHUSETTS SUPREME JUDICIAL
COURT declaring that "barring an individual from the protections,
benefits and obligations of civil marriage solely because that person
would marry a person of the same sex violates the Massachusetts
Constitution." Includes comments by some of the seven gay and lesbian
plaintiff couples who filed the original lawsuit challenging the ban on
same gender marriages in the state, GLORIA BAILEY & LINDA DAVIES,
MIKE HORGAN, and HILLARY & JULIE GOODRIDGE; attorney MARY BONAUTO
from Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, the group that represented
them; Massachusetts Republican GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY; Democratic
MASSACHUSETTS STATE REPRESENTATIVE PHIL TRAVIS; and openly gay U.S.
CONGRESSMEMBER from MASSACHUSETTS BARNEY FRANK (written by CINDY
FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, REX WOCKNER, FENCEBERRY, and
GREG GORDON).

- The freedom to be oneself drew thousands of young LGBT and other
disenfranchised people to SAN FRANCISCO in the late 1960's and early
70's. A growing number of LGBT young people these days are challenging
traditional concepts of gender and sexuality. San Francisco-based writer
and activist MATTILDA BERNSTEIN SYCAMORE has been "genderqueer" for a
number of years. Our STEVE PRIDE chatted recently with Sycamore about
his latest book, "THE END OF SAN FRANCISCO" [City Lights], and the
perils of assimilation.
