(hosted by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
A Minnesota Hallowe'en Parade is out of step with LGBT youth;
A right-wing Christian group fears bully-free U.S. schools;
A Missouri preacher's comments on LGBT rights goes viral;
"DOMA" dies another day, a raped Swedish trans-woman gets justice,
devastating discrimination plagues indigenous North Americans, Madonna
and milk "promote" St. Petersburg paranoia, and more global LGBT news
- In "NewsWrap": A second U.S. federal appeals court declares the
Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) a violation of the Constitution's equal
protection provisions, while the GOP-controlled House of
Representatives approaches the $1.5 million spending cap members
authorized to defend the 1996 statute after the Obama administration
decided to stop doing so... a Belfast judge declares that Northern
Ireland's adoption laws discriminate against unmarried heterosexual and
same-gender couples, while an appeals court in Sweden rules that
accusations of rape can be lodged against a suspect regardless of the
gender identity of the victim... a report issued this week reveals
alarming levels of discrimination against American Indian and Alaskan
Native transgender and gender-nonconforming people... members of the
Trade Union of Russian Citizens sue pop diva Madonna for violating St.
Petersburg's "no promo homo" law during her August 9th concert, while a
member of the Russian Orthodox Church-affiliated People's Council wants
authorities to investigate rainbow-themed milk cartons for violating
the same law... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by
GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by NATALIE
PEOPLES & JOHNNIE TORRES).
- In addition to its infamous reputation for LGBT youth suicides, ANOKA
is best known for its annual Hallowe'en Festival and Parade.
Correspondent DIXIE TREICHEL ["Fresh Fruit" on KFAI-FM/Minneapolis-St.
Paul, Minnesota] speaks with JEFFERSON FIETECK of the youth group
JUSTIN'S GIFT to find out how those two facts have collided to create
the region's latest controversy (with intro music from "Homophobia" by
ROMANOVSKY & PHILLIPS).
- Is it simple anti-bullying activity, or a dastardly plot to turn
school kids queer? For the last 11 years the SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW
CENTER's "Teaching Tolerance" project has successfully encouraged
students to try hanging out one day with someone outside their usual
social sphere. But this year -- the same year that the U.S. civil
rights watchdog branded the conservative evangelical AMERICAN FAMILY
ASSOCIATION a hate group -- MIX IT UP AT LUNCH DAY has suddenly become
a national threat. More than 2,500 schools had planned to hold the
event the day before Hallowe'en, but the AFA has frightened a few into
canceling it. Its Issues Analysis Director BRYAN FISCHER discussed the
group's concerns with "CNN" anchor CAROL COSTELLO (with outro music
from "Homophobia" by ROMANOVSKY & PHILLIPS).
- In a speech that's gone viral, REVEREND PHIL SNIDER of the Brentwood
Christian Church gave the SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI City Council an earful
during a debate over adding LGBT people to their discrimination
protections. But his remarks took a somewhat unexpected turn from where
they began.
