This show is a trip back to the 1970’s, when Women’s Music was just beginning, and the bands were feeling their ways musically and politically, some with lesbian and straight members, and some with members not ready to identify as lesbian. This was a political rebellion, set to music. And I have interviews with members of the Chicago & New Haven Women’s Liberation Rock Bands, the New Harmony Sisterhood Band, and the Berkeley Women’s Music Collective, spread over four hours of music.
Part 1 – 58:24
Chicago Women’s Liberation Rock Band – Don’t Need No Doctor (1972)
New Haven Women’s Liberation Rock Band – So Fine (1972)
Maxine Feldman intro (1994)
Susan Abod Interview
New Haven Women’s Liberation Rock Band – Abortion Song (1972)
Chicago Women’s Liberation Rock Band – Mountain Moving Day (1972)
Susan Abod – It’s Abod / Caffeine (2011)
Pat Ouellette Interview
New Haven Women’s Liberation Rock Band – Shotgun (1972)
One Journey – Grateful Heart (2010)
Chicago Women’s Liberation Rock Band – Ain’t Gonna Marry (1972)
Part 2 65:32
New Harmony Sisterhood Band – Can You Imagine (1981, live)
Marcia Deihl Interview
New Harmony Sisterhood Band – Sojourner Truth (1977)
New Harmony Sisterhood Band – Ballad (1977)
New Harmony Sisterhood Band – Unfinished Business (1977)
New Harmony Sisterhood Band – All Our Lives (1977)
New Harmony Sisterhood Band – Ode to a Gym Teacher (1981)
New Harmony Sisterhood Band – Tired of Fuckers (1981)
Katie Tolles Interview
New Harmony Sisterhood Band – Draglines (1977)
New Harmony Sisterhood Band - Fat Farm (1981)
New Harmony Sisterhood Band – Still Ain’t Satisfied (1981)
Part 3 – 61:06
Berkeley Women’s Music Collective – No Thanks, Mister (1976)
Nancy Vogl Interview
Berkeley Women’s Music Collective – Tryin’ to Survive (1978)
Clinch Mountain Backsteppers – The Bloods (1974)
Berkeley Women’s Music Collective – The Bloods (1976)
Berkeley Women’s Music Collective – Fury (1976)
Berkeley Women’s Music Collective – Back to Boston (1978)
Berkeley Women’s Music Collective – Still Ain’t Satisfied (1976)
Berkeley Women’s Music Collective – Do You Remember (1979)
Berkeley Women’s Music Collective – Darling Companion (1978)
Nancy Vogl – She Knows Just Right (2012)
Berkeley Women’s Music Collective – Gay & Proud (1976)
Part 4 – 60:43
Flying Lesbians – I’m a Lesbian, How About You? (1975)
Casse Culver – I’m Late Again (1976)
Susan Abod Interview, Part 2
Willie Tyson – Debutante Ball (1977)
Susan Abod – You Look Swell in Nothing (2001)
Willie Tyson – You Look Swell in Nothing (1979)
Willie Tyson (Selah) – Hard Movin’ Woman (1972)
Willie Tyson (Selah) – Pat Thomas (1972)
Arlington St. Women’s Caucus – We Might Come In A-Fightin’ (1974)
Reel World String Band – What She Aims to Be (1982)
Reel World String Band – Trouble in Mind (1988)
Bebe K’Roche – Kahlua Mama (1976)
Lavender Jane – Talking Lesbian (1974)
Woody Simmons – Oregon Mountains (1977)
Clinch Mountain Backsteppers – June Apple (1974)
Lavender Blues – Lavender Blues (1978)
Lavender Blues - Wake Up Sister (1978)
Lavender Blues - Lesbian Nation (1978)
And, if I can confide in you, I especially like that this is one of those shows where the artists are talking about their music and bands, but are slipping into the context of their answers comments about the times, what factors were going on politically, and culturally that impacted their music and lives. It’s not just “I wrote this song about such-and-such,” it’s what was going on around them.
