- In "NewsWrap": The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs sounds the alarm about a bill in Nigeria to not only criminalize same-gender relationships but to prosecute anyone who "witnesses, abet[s] or aids" them, while two Malaysian states consider enacting Islamic laws to punish sexual minorities and their supporters with prison sentences on top of penalties they'd get from federal prosecutions... the first LGBT-themed films from Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand highlight the 22nd annual Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival... it appears that the religions exemption in Michigan's anti-bullying law will be dropped, while California's Supreme Court rules that ProtectMarriage.com, the sponsors of the marriage equality-banning Proposition 8, can defend it in a federal lawsuit challenging its constitutionality, and opponents of the new state law requiring the integration of age-appropriate teaching of the historical roles of LGBT and disabled people into social science instruction launch two new propositions to specifically delete language requiring the inclusion of LGBT people and sexual orientation... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by PAM MARSHALL and JENN MAHONEY).

- The latest skirmish in the long-running battle over the legality of PROPOSITION 8 was adjudicated on November 17th. The CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT said backers of the marriage equality-banning measure should be allowed to defend it in a federal challenge to its constitutionality. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had asked the state’s high court for a recommendation on the legal standing of ballot initiative sponsors to defend them if state officials refuse to do so, which was the specific situation in this case. Pacifica Radio’s CHRISTOPHER MARTINEZ has more (with comments by Prop 8 opponents attorney THEODORE OLSON, ProtectMarriage.com attorney ANTHONY PUGNO, and Legal Director SHANNON MINTER of the National Center for Lesbian Rights).

- U.S.-born DEANNE SMITH now calls Montreal her home, but recently she hasn't been spending much time there either. The lesbian comic has been on tour, sharing her edgy brand of humor from Australia to Edinburgh, where her appearance at that city's Fringe Festival brought her to the attention of ROSIE WILBY & WENDY BAVERSTOCK of Renaissance FM's "Out in South London" show [www.deannesmith.com]. ********************************************************
