(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle) "We Were Here" documents the advent of AIDS in San Francisco; "Riot Acts" traces the travels of trans-musicians; Taipei Pride parades for equality, there's renewed life for Uganda's "Kill the Gays" bill, Brazil's top appeals court favors same-gender nuptials, Queensland lawmakers consider civil unions while New Hampshire legislators advance a marriage equality repeal bill, and more - In "NewsWrap": A record crowd numbering as many as 50,000 colorfully march in Taipei in the Taiwanese capital's 9th annual Pride parade... Uganda's infamous "Kill the Gays" bill is apparently back on the front burner, and Nigerian lawmakers consider harsher laws against homosexuality in their country... Brazil's top appeals court becomes the highest court in Latin America's most populous nation to rule in favor of marriage equality, while Denmark's government announces a proposal to upgrade currently-available registered partnerships for gay and lesbian couples to full marriage equality... a civil unions bill is introduced in the Australian state of Queensland's parliament, while the Republican-controlled legislature in New Hampshire is on track to repeal the U.S. state's 2009 marriage equality law... leading Russian gay rights activist Nikolai Alekseev announces his resignation from the advocacy groups he's led since 2005... and other LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by SARAH SWEENEY and VASH BODDIE). - The world contracted Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome 30 years ago this year. Like an unrelenting hurricane, AIDS roiled the city of SAN FRANCISCO for two decades until the medical advancements of the late 90s brought the eye of the storm. Those death years left the city ravaged and exhausted ? yet the memories seem to be fading for a younger generation. Our media correspondent STEVE PRIDE found a moving refresher course in "WE WERE HERE", a new documentary that utilizes San Francisco?s experience to encourage an overdue conversation ? both about the history of the epidemic, and the lessons to be learned from it (with clips and comments by filmmaker DAVID WEISSMAN, and outro music from "Ready for the 80s" by THE VILLAGE PEOPLE). [www.wewereherfilm.com] - The film "RIOT ACTS" has been called "a ?trans-fabulous rockumentary? representing the multi-dimensional lives of transgender and gender variant musicians." According to our queer music correspondent JD DOYLE it?s not about politics or body parts ? but it does get personal (with music, clips, and comments by performer/filmmaker MADSEN MINAX). "After making her choices, Donna Britton from Shadow Mountain Publishing graciously offered one free 6-month membership for the winner in the Pop/Rock Pro Category as well as discounted memberships for all of the winners in the other categories. Interviews with Arnold McCuller & Gwen Avery http://www.queermusicheritage.com/nov2011.html This month I get to share with you two interviews, with artists who both began recording in the mid-1970?s, Arnold McCuller and Gwen Avery. First is Arnold McCuller, and while he?s a successful solo artist, he?s also quite well known as a very in-demand session singer, who?s been on thousands of recordings over the course of 35 years. He?s provided exquisite backing vocals for a who?s who of the music industry. We covered his whole career, which included some comments on working with Luther Vandros, Michael Callen, and James Taylor. My second interview, with Gwen Avery, was especially a treat because it?s the first she?s done in many years. Of course we talked about the music, including her signature song ?Sugar Mama,? but she also had some quite candid comments about the folks at Olivia Records. Also, I've got two additional segments for Gwen, a rare 1979 radio concert, not heard in over 30 years, and a collection of rare tracks. Part 1 ? 60:00 Arnold McCuller ? Freebird (2000) Arnold McCuller Interview (2011) Melissa Manchester ? Oh Heaven (1974) Revelation ? Get Ready for This (1975) Good Vibrations ? It was done in 2002 and many of my radio cohorts contributed. Thinking fresh about the subject, I added some new "hints".... ********** "Know your audience".....I can't tell you how many times I've been asked to put someone's CD "in my rotation." Almost no GLBT radio show that has a rotation....that's top 40, daily programming...show that you cared enough to bother to understand the type of show you are contacting. Just recently I threw out a 10x14 glossy photo of an artist, where would I keep it, I would have rather he spent his money on giving me a real plastic case for the CD, instead of a paper one...I don't want to file CDs in paper on my shelves so essentially I paid for a case for his. With the internet we don't need photos anyway, we can just grab one from their site.... ....But thinking of that, their site NEEDS to have a large scan of the CD cover, and artist, to be grabbed. I've seen some with no graphics and some too small to be useful. Someone writing about your CD in an online column or blog may want to show the product, makes more interesting reading. I am much more likely to read an article with graphics. Their site needs to have a way for a radio person to contact them! You'd be surprised how many don't, and I do NOT want to fill in a guest book and wonder if anyone ever sees that I wrote. And if I've played them on my shows I want to be able to let them know that....that just makes sense, I want to let them know that their efforts paid off, so they keep me on their distribution list, and they certainly should want to know that also. I do like when an email from an artist includes a mp3, but go the step further, include the artist's name in the file title, like "Band X-let me love you"....if I get a file just called "let me love you"....and if I don't Immediately rename it, I will very shortly forget who it is, and after a few months may not even be able to guess when listening. That also applies for mp3s that a programmer can download from a website. If I've already had contact with a rep and it's been clearly established that I ONLY play openly GLBT folks, when they write me six months later with another act, their email NEEDS to say if the artist is GLBT, I don't have time to try to research that...I'll just delete the email. Similarly, if you know a show is only for Women's Music, contact them accordingly. Times have changed and the digital era, like it or not, is here....if you can provide the CD either as a real disc or a full download, offer a choice to the programmer. Some, like me, really want a real disc, with real liner notes, maybe even lyrics to read. Some consider that more clutter and just want the sound files. Message-ID: Hi All, I need to bring you up to date on some things happening here at SWS and related websites. Several of you have emailed about OutVoice banner ads, and the "Donate" button being gone from the websites. Not to forget those of you who have emailed and or called about my "silence" over the last few weeks. I also want to let you know the OV Top 20 CD Chart will be posted by tomorrow, 11-18-2011. This is an email I have contemplated and dreaded for the last several weeks. Yes those who have emailed are correct all "donate" buttons have been removed from the SWS Network websites. First of all I want again to thank those of you who have utilized the donate buttons and or the OV Banner ads. You have indeed made a huge difference in the outcome of this email. However, as of November 1, 2011 SWS will no longer have donate buttons on any websites. Also as on November 1, 2011 SWS Network and any related websites will no longer utilize or accept PayPal for any reason. I was contacted on 10-30-2011 by PayPal stating that they required additional information from me proving non-profit and or charity status. This was directly in response to the recent fund raiser for the GLBT Hall Of Fame. I added the donate buttons after my hospitalization in 2008 at the request of several artists and members. Just an explanation. Those of you who know me are aware that I have never been really comfortable with donate buttons. As I investigated the reason for PayPal's request and insinuation I have found some really disturbing facts and information. The most disturbing was that the action by PayPal was taken as direct response from complaints received over the GLBT Hall Of Fame fundraiser. I was told by an acquaintance at PayPal that at least two of these complaints were filed by persons from the GLBT community specifically the GLBT music community. The identity of the persons making the complaints was also shared. However, as this information was shared from one GLBT community member to another it was also done as FYI and not as proof, as this would cause the person who shared the information to become unemployed. I do not return such kindness with actions to cause unemployment. I am also aware that maybe some homophobia may play a part in this. Hate and threatening emails have escalated since the GLBT Hall Of Fame promotion. So I do not really know if the information provided was accurate or of another nature. It is interesting that the information provided is believable as I have had pretty big issues with the persons identified. Again there is no proof. The bottom line here is that this is not the first problem with PayPal. However it is my last problem with PayPal. When the PayPal debit card was stolen last year it took an unacceptable amount of time for PayPal to reissue the card. Well actually, you have to reapply not like with your bank where the stolen card is cancelled and a new one sent. During the period of reapply some limitations are placed on the PayPal account. With that experience I have since taken money from the PayPal account where PayPal has total unrestricted control and moved it to our bank where there is regulation and a more professional relationship. I do want to share that because of moving the money to the bank no donated funds were lost or retained by PayPal. I am in the process of selecting the next payment method to be used on the SWS Network websites. Which is why one reason I have been "silent" and the OV list is late in being posted. Merchant accounts have tons of fees and "rates" so it is indeed a much longer process that I had anticipated. I am also considering Google's service and checking into Amazon. My goal is to insure the most efficient program with regard to processing time and costs. I will of course keep you posted on my decision. My goal is to have payment processing available by next week. Those customers waiting to pay a hosting, design or website management fee are fine. So no problems there. Other than this action has not just caused the donate buttons to be taken down. It has also prevented me from collecting payments due from clients. So this jeopardized SWS Network and my income for services provided. Which greatly disturbs me. As a result I am in a position of insuring that the SWS Network as a self-sustaining entity. Meaning that from this point on all SWS Network websites must at least generate the funds to cover their existence. So some changes will be taking place over the next few weeks at all SWS Network websites. The SWS Artist promotion will only be free to those who only wish a link on the SWS GLBT Artist Directory and at GLBT Artists.com. That will remain free if the artist has a link to either StoneWall Society, OutVoice, and or the GLBT Artists.com website. If an artist wants to use the promotional services available there will be an annual membership fee of $15.00. I have fought doing this for years. However this recent action has left me with either that option or Len gets a job with a salary. Which would take time away from managing the SWS Network. Which would probably begin the end of the network. I will evaluate how this is working on a monthly basis. If after six months a website is not self sustained with regard to covering the existence of the website, then that website will in all likelihood be closed. Future support of the SWS Network will either be by the new membership fees, promotional services, or hosting service income, not donations. Again many thanks to those who have supported!!! But to be honest this has been pretty much the same people, again and again who have been the SWS Network financial supporters. I do not feel it is fair and or appropriate for a few to pay for the many. So promotional efforts on my behalf and SWS network will be focused on those who have or do support. I have always had web hosting available at a very good rate. However only one SWS artist is utilizing that service. I have always had services like meta tag creation, again at a great rate. Also only one artist has taken advantage of that. Just sharing how the support comes in. Not that I do not appreciate those who have shown personal and Network support by donating, I do. just not something that will fit with the future of the SWS Network. Rainbow World Radio will remain commercial free and no advertising outside of SWS Network promotions will be present in programs and or on the RWR website. The GLBT Hall Of Fame may carry some appropriate advertising depending on the final determination of what is the best way to insure the Hall's long life. On that subject, the GLBT Hall Of Fame, I have met with two attorneys and three business advisors. As well many of you have emailed with your thoughts - HUGE THANKS! All of the advisory meetings have ended the same. I need to insure the protection of property rights with regard to the LOGO and or name of the Hall. Some may know this better as protecting my brand. Several of you have emailed with the same suggestion. So I am pursuing that first. I am in process of receiving the necessary information on having the Hall's logo registered. My understanding is that I may go ahead and use TM. I should have confirmation on that next week. My advisors have doubts about non-profit being the best way to go with regard to the Hall. Non-profit and not-for-profit are limited and to some degree difficult when it comes to financial support available. If the Hall needs to generate income to support that would be better served as a DBA, LLC or corporation. The costs on those vary and can get up there. So I am looking at several ways to meet those goals as well. I have no problems with the SWS Network covering costs for RWR and the GLBT Hall Of Fame. However there is one website, service which has only covered the fairly high expense once. That being the Pride In The Arts website and program. Neither event paid for itself. The awards only paid for themselves once. And this year due to either product availability and or finance awards from the last awards event have yet to be sent. As this program is not a financial self server nor have I been successful in getting the awards out in what I view to be the correct time, I am suspending as of today the Pride In The Arts program. I am not sure what I will do with the domain yet, it does have a life value. All PITA award information will be included on the SWS Network website. that site is in redesign to cover the entire network. Website hosting services, design services, art services, and the like will in the very near future be available from On Equal Grounds.com. Sorry about the length of this email but I felt you all had a right to know. I will be sending all artists in all genre's information on changes and related dates in the next two weeks. As for my reaction to the instigation of this, well I am disturbed at best. Whether from haters or our community that complaints were filed due to the Hall is very upsetting to me. Not much else to say there. As always if you have comments and or questions please feel free to contact me. And again a huge thanks to those who have been supportive! Message-ID: <8CE7760BD008481-19D8-91F0@Webmail-m118.sysops.aol.com> "THIS WAY OUT: the international lesbian & gay radio magazine" Program #1,234 - distributed 11/21/11 Airs on more than 200 local stations around the world... or Listen now via our free podcasts at www.thiswayout.org or on iTunes. (hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle) A lesbian comic's audience participation freaks out a Fringe Festival; Equality opponents get "standing" in Proposition 8's shadow; A U.N. agency fears Nigeria's proposed marriage and advocacy bans, two Malaysian states consider double jeopardy for LGBT Muslims, Hong Kong sees its 22nd annual Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, religious exemptions get excised from Michigan's anti-bullying bill, more news - In "NewsWrap": The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs sounds the alarm about a bill in Nigeria to not only criminalize same-gender relationships but to prosecute anyone who "witnesses, abet[s] or aids" them, while two Malaysian states consider enacting Islamic laws to punish sexual minorities and their supporters with prison sentences on top of penalties they'd get from federal prosecutions... the first LGBT-themed films from Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand highlight the 22nd annual Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival... it appears that the religions exemption in Michigan's anti-bullying law will be dropped, while California's Supreme Court rules that ProtectMarriage.com, the sponsors of the marriage equality-banning Proposition 8, can defend it in a federal lawsuit challenging its constitutionality, and opponents of the new state law requiring the integration of age-appropriate teaching of the historical roles of LGBT and disabled people into social science instruction launch two new propositions to specifically delete language requiring the inclusion of LGBT people and sexual orientation... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by PAM MARSHALL and JENN MAHONEY). - The latest skirmish in the long-running battle over the legality of PROPOSITION 8 was adjudicated on November 17th. The CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT said backers of the marriage equality-banning measure should be allowed to defend it in a federal challenge to its constitutionality. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had asked the state?s high court for a recommendation on the legal standing of ballot initiative sponsors to defend them if state officials refuse to do so, which was the specific situation in this case. Pacifica Radio?s CHRISTOPHER MARTINEZ has more (with comments by Prop 8 opponents attorney THEODORE OLSON, ProtectMarriage.com attorney ANTHONY PUGNO, and Legal Director SHANNON MINTER of the National Center for Lesbian Rights). - U.S.-born DEANNE SMITH now calls Montreal her home, but recently she hasn't been spending much time there either. The lesbian comic has been on tour, sharing her edgy brand of humor from Australia to Edinburgh, where her appearance at that city's Fringe Festival brought her to the attention of ROSIE WILBY & WENDY BAVERSTOCK of Renaissance FM's "Out in South London" show [www.deannesmith.com]. ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.), and is supported by donations from our listeners. => Please log on to thiswayout.org to add your support [a tax-deductible charitable donation in the U.S.].
