The 1970?s http://www.queermusicheritage.com/may2011.html The theme of the show this month is "Straight Artists, Queer Songs: The 1970's," and it's a continuation from last month when I focused on the 1960's. But there are some big differences. Last month I said I was selecting my music from the last decade before Stonewall, and that has a cultural significance, with the main impact being on the visibility of GLBT people. Not only did the music by them come out of the closet, but GLBT people were more visible to the general public. Part 1 ? 1970 to 1973 Kinks ? Taiga Ishikawa becomes Japan's first openly gay elected official by winning a seat on the Tokyo area Toshima Ward Assembly... King and Spalding, the law firm hired by the U.S. House of Representatives to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), bows out, but its senior partner Paul Clement, who was its lead attorney and wants to continue that defense, resigns and brings the case to another law firm... supporters of Proposition 8 file a motion to have U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling overturning the marriage equality-banning California measure thrown out after he comes out as a partnered gay man soon after retiring... the U.K. Equal Love Campaign asks newlywed royals William and Kate to support same-gender marriage [with comments by venerable British activist PETER TATCHELL]... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by PAM MARSHALL and JENN MAHONEY). - "FRANK KAMENY - GRANDFATHER OF THE [U.S.] GAY MOVEMENT" is profiled and "FRANK KAMENY CLEANS OUT HIS ATTIC" adds to the saga in these two "RAINBOW MINUTES" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR and BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read, respectively, by TOM MILLER and CHRIS DELBOM). - MOSCOW's first sanctioned Pride event may be happening at the end of May... but then again, it may not. If Pride does break out in the RUSSIAN capital this year, it'll be largely due to the efforts of NIKOLAI ALEKSEEV, the country's best-known LGBT activist. Public Pride gatherings have been banned in Moscow since 2006, but Alekseev went to the European Court of Human Rights, which found those bans in violation of the EU's freedom of assembly provisions. This week Alekseev announced on his website plans for a May 28th action, saying that Moscow authorities had given the green light for it. However, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has said that he would not support a march through the city. We'll update the situation as it develops in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, "This Way Out's" STEVE PRIDE [with thanks for production assistance to RICK WATTS] explores the past, present and future of Russian LGBT civil rights in the first of a special series of conversations with Alekseev himself. ******************************************************** => Please log on to www.thiswayout.org to contribute to our nonprofit group [a tax-deductible charitable donation in the U.S.]. Message-ID: I?m very excited to announce the arrival of my new CD, MOON! For the past 2 years I?ve aimed my creative energies and talent for writing award-winning songs toward creating a new CD named MOON. I feel this album really shows me at my best as a mature artist. Though I?m known as a family entertainer, this album is aimed squarely at the adult listening audience. The 15 songs express themes of love and death, AIDS and autism, Seasonal Affective Disorder, Betty Boop and Buddha, oysters and Coney Island, home and outer space, celebration and sorrow (and, of COURSE, the MOON!). The music is rich and the lyrics poetic and my personal artwork, offering a deliciously beautiful album of diverse music I feel certain you?ll enjoy. Soon the CD?s will be available at CDBaby through my website, www.martinswinger.com, but I welcome you to order directly from me by sending $15 (I?ll pay postage!) to Martin Swinger, 52 Green St. Augusta, ME 04330. Check or money order is fine ? be SURE to include your RETURN ADDRESS and I?ll put a copy (or as many as you wish!) in the mail to you ASAP! Below you?ll find a sample song from the CD, Wooden Boy. You can read the back story on my website! I look forward to sharing my music with you. THANKS and Happy Spring! Yours, Martin Swinger -- ...Some songs are great to dance to, and some feel good to cry to, and others are fun to sing along to, but sometimes you discover songs that simply invite you to stop and listen. I'll send my FB friends the PR page as soon as it's up with time, address, etc... 'Til then, here's the official release: Singer/songwriter and legendary ?Downtown? keyboard whiz Zecca (Get Wet, Cherry Vanilla, Garland Jeffreys) returns to the Gershwin Hotel for his first one-man show since the glory days of the Pyramid Club. After touring most of 2010 as music director for John Kelly?s award winning ?Paved Paradise Redux: The Art of Joni Mitchell?, Zecca launches a new night of new original songs spiced with crowd favorites and a tune or two by other rockers he?s always wanted to sing. Be prepared to stomp, shout and sing along! For a more complete bio of Zecca, go to: http://www.policefans.org/Police_wiki/index.php?title=Zecca_Esquibel Hope you can make it! What the winning side did not reckon on was the viral internet power of a speech by Democratic REPRESENTATIVE STEVE SIMON, who used the religious right's reasoning against it to argue for marriage equality. - We're still waiting to hear whether MOSCOW activists will attempt to hold a Pride March on May 28th. Pride organizers first announced last week that the city had dropped its opposition after the European Court of Human Rights ruled that its bans on previous marches had violated E.U. freedom of assembly provisions. However Moscow officials said they were still "studying" the situation. Whatever happens next, the world will be looking to NIKOLAI ALEKSEEV for the latest developments. Alekseev explains the Russian LGBT movement's Pride strategy, and recounts his September kidnapping by what were presumably government agents, in the second of a wide-ranging four-part interview with "This Way Out's" STEVE PRIDE when the activist visited the U.S. recently (with thanks for production assistance to RICK WATTS). ******************************************************** => Please log on to www.thiswayout.org to contribute to our nonprofit group [a tax-deductible charitable donation in the U.S.]. Message-ID: <76888FE504FC469FA2B7391C776C548B@D8LLQDC1> Hey all! First Congratulations to the artists of the April 2011 Top Ten Song Chart! The chart is online at www.outvoice.net. The Top Ten Song show will premiere on www.rainbowworldradio.com this evening Friday 13, 2011 at 8pm eastern time. Lots of emails from fans and SWS members on the "empty boxes" at OutVoice. For the last six weeks I have been in an evaluation and regroup mode. Lots of searching, internet and soul. Now it is almost time to do the "big reveal". (Never thought I would use that phrase. ;-)) On May 16, 2011 at 4pm eastern the New OutVoice will premiere. New features as well as informational and promotional services will be included as suggested by those "empty boxes". Some of those being a section for New Releases, Reviews, Events, and RWR programming availability. As a matter of fact these services mentioned will also be featured at www.glbtartists.com. If you have a new release or event email me here for inclusion. I will get back with you on required information. By the 16th there will also be a direct form on the website to submit. In my search I found again a lot of voters asking for direct reference to GLBT Musicians. Well I am not going to put a list. What I am doing is adding a directory on the vote pages of both charts. Those directories will be of web locations where the voters may learn about or experience GLBT musicians. For example, Of course RWR and the SWS GLBT Artist Directory will be listed. I will also be including links to radio programs, websites, groups, etc to provide a diverse resource for finding GLBT music. Those resources not just being the StoneWall Society Network. A lot of the voters and SWS members have questions about the last six weeks, changes at OutVoice and in the SWS Network in general. To answer those questions and explain directional changes I will have a show linked at OutVoice and SWS which will answer. Once that show is up, announcements will be sent. So don't go looking today. Lots to answer will probably be next week. This is not a RWR program but I am sure will include some music. :-) That's all for now. Please feel free to take a look at those empty boxes and send me your feedback and or information. How do they work? I sell them for whatever price then the fan uses a code on the card to download it from a certain site? (I'd probably use CD Baby.) 2. Do you have success with download cards? Why or why not? 3. Do you have success with a only a certain demographic? Most of my fans are middle aged and older and I'm wondering if they would use such a thing. Thanks for your input. Message-ID: <769A37DC727F4F1B9A6C06602476D34F@D8LLQDC1> Hey all! As promised OutVoice has changed. Please take a minute to check out the new OutVoice and send me your feedback. If you have release information to share all releases will be posted free for registered participants through 5-31-2011. To see more in the New Release feature at OutVoice see the SWS GLBT Artist Promotion page at www.stonewallsociety.com/artpromo.htm. A special note to artists; you may also want to see what is new at the StoneWall Society free GLBT Artist promotion at www.stonewallsociety.com/artpromo.htm which has also been updated and contains major changes. I still have a few reviews to post. On the vote pages for the charts I will be adding links to radio programs and websites where content includes GLBT artists. Many voters have requested a "list" of eligible artists. I am not going to produce a list, but will provide links to websites where GLBT artists are found. I do mean real GLBT Artists and supporters, not artists that the GLBT community like. In doing an extensive search for other GLBT Artist charts all I could find were charts containing what the GLBT community like as in Pink, Lady Gaga, etc., and most horridly Justin Bieber who by his own statement thinks being "gay" is a decision. As you will notice there is no Top 20 CD chart for February through April. I have decided to be a chart there must be at least 100 voters for that chart in that month. If the Top 20 CD chart falls below 100 again for May I have also decided the Top 20 CD chart will close. It seems there is more interest in a top song chart now than for a CD chart. So if you like the GLBT CD Chart and wish it to remain, please vote or ask your fans to vote. Even if you do not have a current CD is it such a crime to support your fellow artists??? There are quite a few GLBT Artists who ask fans to vote at OutVoice specifically stating to support GLBT Music. A few minor additions will be made at OutVoice this week like reviews etc. I look forward to your comments. As it stands fan response is over artist response by like 75%. So OutVoice is clearly a fan site rather than that of the artist. Just sharing information. If the voter count is below 100 there will again be no top 20 CD chart. I made that determination, ( a minimum of 100 voters to make a chart. As well if any chart falls below 100 voters for three consecutive months that chart will close.), to establish a standard for the chart. Already the Top 20 CD Chart has been given an extra month. At the moment there have been under 40 voters for the Top 20 CD Chart. So not looking good for the continuation of a chart that has been online supporting GLBT musicians since 1996. I am AMAZED at the very small number of musicians, six to be exact, who have benefited from the chart over the years, that have actually voted this month to help sustain the chart. Thanks to those six musicians. What to say to the others? Not my call that would be up to voters and other musicians. As there are over 400 musicians in the SWS promotion alone I guess I need to interpret this as an artist statement that the chart is not needed? I get that artists cannot make fans vote. I get that artists are motivated to vote and request votes when they have a project on or geared to the chart. I don't get why many of you have not at least voted to support your fellow musicians and or the chart. Having spent a few months looking at charts to see if there was maybe a better area to promo I found charts are pretty much about what GLBT like rather than for GLBT artists. I actually found none, other than OutVoice that were specifically or even a larger percent geared to actual GLBT artists. So if that is ok with you artists then ok with me. Five days left in voting. From my point a view a huge disappointment in the GLBT music community. Why should fans support you if you do not support yourself? That last question would also apply to me. In my last few emails with voters and SWS members who usually vote asking why where etc? I got an overwhelming response stating that voters have supported the chart with votes. If musicians want it to continue and they feel the chart is relevant then time for them to show that. If not then voters need not waste time voting. My hope is that musicians especially those which have benefited by the chart will step up and take the time. After all it costs nothing, just a few minutes of your time. I have over the years watched the GLBT music community spend way more, money and time, to efforts which ended up very negative and then go back for more. I am now just going to wait and see. I have spent enough time emailing to encourage votes and growing a voter base. Ball or vote in your court musicians. To a lesser degree I see the same apathy when I post my monthly playlists, here and especially on Facebook. Usually almost every artist I play on my OutRadio shows is on Facebook, and I "tag" every one, which places the link to the playlist on their own walls. You would think this would be great for them. It's more exposure and their fans and friends can see they are getting airplay. For a three-hour show I am lucky if I get more than five artists acknowledging or thanking me. Fortunately I am not driven by "thank you's" and just want to support the artists and give them exposure. But hey, I'm human, it's nice to know if these folks care that I've done a whole lot of work for them, in that I also archive every show, with links to their websites and scans of the CD covers. There are not many of us radio folk exclusively playing GLBT artists. So, Artists, consider showing some support for those supporting you, and in the case of the Outvoice Charts, support for other artists. It IS a win-win situation. In my opinion it's just a basic form of GRATITUDE that as JD said is reflected for the work programmers put in for us to be seen and heard.? ? I am THANKFULLY on play lists that I see the same people again and again responding in a positive way for the time and consideration.? I know a choice for a programmer was MADE for me to be played.? There is ALOT of GREAT LGBT talent out there cranking out amazing work, so if you show up on a play list, the very least one could do is say THANK YOU for the exposure.? If people are too damn busy being "STARS" to acknowledge that they have been played on a radio show, given time for an interview slot or have their video broadcast, then they are doing quite fine apparently and clearly?don't need the exposure that so many other artists are seeking in a community they want to be a part of.? I very much sympathize with your frustration, and wish I could offer a solution, or magic motivation wand to use. After all it costs nothing, just a few minutes of your time. I am more in line with Terry's view, just making that clear. I also do not do this for the "thanks". However there is nothing wrong with appreciation and the need or desire for that to be shown. There is no excuse for not saying thanks to fans and voters for taking their time to support. There is also no excuse for not saying thanks for air play or any promotion. To me now a lack of that appreciation clearly states the artist in question is no longer in need of my support. They certainly do not appreciate the support. Which says to them it has little or no value. I know and understand when an artist is on the road or in schedule hell. But when they can post one promo or give one point to a promo then they can do others as well. How hard and how much time does it take to say thank you or hey look I am here???? Not much! Seems to get that appreciation in many cases you either have to make it really really hard for that artist to get material presented there or charge tons of money which also has no clear path back to the art. I have no interest in either and both are readily available elsewhere. I have always asked for a simple link back to one of the SWS/OV websites or thank your voters. I am way more interested in helping create and support a community awareness of artists who value the community, their support and input than those seeking kudos and recognition from large commercial ventures. I see this situation as an opportunity to see which is which. That way I can and will concentrate where needed and appreciated. The others have their own agendas which obviously do not fall in line with what I do. And that is all OK. In my opinion it's just a basic form of GRATITUDE that as JD said is reflected for the work programmers put in for us to be seen and heard. I am THANKFULLY on play lists that I see the same people again and again responding in a positive way for the time and consideration. I know a choice for a programmer was MADE for me to be played. There is ALOT of GREAT LGBT talent out there cranking out amazing work, so if you show up on a play list, the very least one could do is say THANK YOU for the exposure. If people are too damn busy being "STARS" to acknowledge that they have been played on a radio show, given time for an interview slot or have their video broadcast, then they are doing quite fine apparently and clearly don't need the exposure that so many other artists are seeking in a community they want to be a part of. How are we gonna say that we don't have EQUALITY in an industry where we can't even seen support our own in COMMUNITY. On another note; Reviews, New Releases and select programming from Rainbow World Radio are now also directly available at OutVoice and www.glbtartists.com. In all the searching and such over the past three months to determine voter loss at OutVoice Top 20 I discovered a few very exciting facts. 1.) GLBT Artists at www.glbtartists.com and the SWS GLBT Artists Directory is the largest active directory of GLBT Artists I could find on the Internet! 2.) OutVoice seems to be the only ranking system online specifically for GLBT Artists and is also the oldest obviously. Now there will be at least three websites all carrying content to promote artists in the GLBT community. LGBT Pride is accidentally displayed in Kabul, Afghanistan ? until drivers discover what their rainbow bumper stickers represent... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by BEN CARON and CHRIS WILSON). - "This Way Out's" BEN CARON got a backstage pass to visit during the run of her latest play in Los Angeles with iconic lesbian writer JANE ANDERSON ? and he took us along. - Canadian once-country singer k.d. lang crooned her way into being practically a musical genre unto herself. She opened up about the singular journey she's been on with ROISE WILBY during Rosie's "Out in South London" program on Resonance-FM (with intro/outro music from "I Confess" from k.d.'s new "SING IT LOUD" CD). ******************************************************** => Please log on to www.thiswayout.org to contribute to our nonprofit group [a tax-deductible charitable donation in the U.S.].
