This month I?m bringing you ?Cris Williamson: The Early Years.? Cris is of course iconic for her 1975 release ?The Changer and the Changed,? which helped Olivia Records really get the Women?s Music Movement off the ground. But many of her fans may know that there is a music history to be told that pre-dates Olivia Records, by about ten years. This goes back to her high school years in Wyoming, where she released three albums on the Avanti label. As only around 500 copies of each were pressed these albums are very rare, so this is the music of Cris Williamson you may not be able to hear, and the reason for this show.

    The OutVoice Top Ten Songs of 2010 will post on January 10, 2011 and be first announced on www.rainbowworldradio.com at 8pm eastern. 

The OutVoice Top 40 CD's of 2010 chart will post on www.outvoice.net on 1-15, 2011. 

Starting this month the Top 40 CD chart will become a Top 20 CD chart. You may still vote for a full ten CD's per ballot. This top 20 format will make having a monthly show to showcase these CD's more achievable. So starting in February there will be a monthly Top Ten Song and Top 20 CD show to accompany the charts.

OK, here we are, just a few days away from Christmas, and Sylvia?s Place is still looking for a special delivery of those gift cards.
If you?ve been following this blog, you know I have been helping Santa track down?my?$400 donation?earmarked for?lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and queer?youth?searching for shelter at??Sylvia?s Place in NYC,? following the cancellation of the OUTMusic Awards on November 22nd (originally scheduled for December 1st at the Town Hall).
As a nominee for OUTStanding Love Song of the Year, ?I wanted to keep the positive energy flowing by donating the funds I paid?for the OMA Gala package?to an organization dedicated to assisting?LGBTQ kids in crisis.?? I learned about Sylvia?s Place through my contact at OUTMusic, and had hoped to deliver the gift cards personally on December 1st? when I was in NYC.
Fast forward to today, three weeks later almost to the minute, when I was advised by OUTMusic that the trip to Sylvia?s Place had also been canceled.??? Nonetheless, I was devoted to a cause now, so returned home and blogged about the experience.
Where, oh, where are those?gift cards?? Following the first blog, I was contacted by the administrator of charity funds for Metropolitan Community Church New York ? Sylvia?s Place, advising there had been no communication from OUTMusic about my donation.?? Surely there was some misunderstanding?? I had all but been assured the gift cards were already delivered.
I gave all the info needed to MCCNY ? Sylvia?s Place, who let me know everything was in place to meet with OUTMusic on Monday the 2oth and get the donation in hand.?? Finally, I thought, Santa would get the gift cards in time to take care of Sylvia?s kids.
So, imagine my surprise to get an email yesterday from OUTMusic advising that only $150 of my contribution went to Sylvia?s Place, while the balance of $250 was used to purchase sleeping bags and board games for a holiday party benefiting?OUTMusic?s ??sponsor a youth? campaign.?? Now, this is all in the same pot more or less, our LGBTQ ?kids? are getting helped, so it?s all good.? Right?? Sort of.?? Problem is, I had that money specifically earmarked for Sylvia?s Place, and thought I was very clear about that.
Just to clear up any confusion, I immediately advised my contact that I wanted all 400?bucks to go to Sylvia?s kids, cuz? Santa was on a deadline and getting?impatient.?? MCCNY Sylvia?s Place ? Gift Card Mystery Solved, Santa Donation in Nick of Time


Well, a lot has been happening at Sylvia?s Place in New York City, since I last reported that Santa was still busy trying to track down the missing gift cards.??? If you?ve been following the crumbs on this??cookie trail, you know we?ve been trying to track down Santa?s $250 missing donation (See?Dec 22, 2010?post Sylvia?s Place LGBT Kids ? Tracking Down Santa?s Donation) since November.? I was worried OUTMusic would not deliver in time, so sent an additional $250 to make sure?these kids had their?stocking stuffers for Christmas.
I was thrilled to receive an email from the administrator of charity funds for MCCNY?on Tuesday, January 4th, letting me know that Sylvia?s Place had enough money to purchase GAP gift cards for all residents of the shelter, so the kids were able to get warm clothing for Christmas.?? She also let me know that OUTMusic sent the balance of my original $400 contribution to Sylvia?s Place the week after Christmas, so the mystery is solved, Santa?s donation arrived in full, and the?LGBTQ? youth?at Sylvia?s Place in NYC had a little something special in their stockings this year.
My thanks to MCCNY for working with me to get the money in the hands of Sylvia?s Place,? to OUTMusic for following through on their promise, and to all of you out there who share in my goal to keep the kids in our community off the streets, safe, sheltered, nurtured and fed.??? I gave away a lot of tapes at concerts and I think they're all gone now. I  
hope you find success with your overstock. I know what you mean about 
taking  them to the landfill. Not only is it painful emotionally (we work so hard 
on  them) but we don't need anymore garbage cluttering up our planet.
 
My problem is CDs. Now that I'm selling a fair amount of downloads, CDs  
aren't selling as well. I'll be dead before I sell all these discs. Any ideas  
what to do with those?

Sandy, 
   That's a difficult one...........as a collector and archivist I seek out cassettes by GLBT artists because very often that was the only format in which an artist released a work, so it's valuable history to me. I've done entire shows, several times, based just on songs available only on tape. And you've sent me your tapes, thank you..:) But if the material was or is now on CD, I prefer that, for sound quality and ease of use.

As a collector I've also found that it's hard to find those rare releases, dealers (such as on eBay) just do not want to bother with them. I quick trip to eBay and inputting a "search" in "music" on the word "gay" got me 1144 hits, 11 of them tapes, and none of those were particularly collectable.

But your question is what should an artist do with quantities of their old releases on tape. The only thing that comes to mind is to donate them to GLBT archives...and a catch is to check first to see if even they would want them. They may not have any capability for visitors to play tapes. This is almost always the situation I've found when visiting archives around the country, if they even have a music collection. And as they would not likely want "quantities" of a donated item, the option of you tracking down the whole list of these archives (and I'm not sure where that list is) would be more work than most might want. them. They may not have any capability for visitors to play  tapes. This is 
almost always the situation I've found when visiting archives  around the 
country, if they even have a music collection. And as they would  not likely 
want "quantities" of a donated item, the option of you tracking  down the 
whole list of these archives (and I'm not sure where that list is)  would be 
more work than most might want. [Of course you would want to assure  the 
Lesbian Herstory Archives gets a couple copies of each; their tape  collection

Jamie-have you ever thought about making them into artwork? Mounting multiple copies in a shadowbox frame or something like that? I know it's not exactly the "best" way to get "rid" of them but it can certainly be a cool personal piece of art (especially if you can somehow incorporate the cassette artwork as a back ground, etc)-just a thought (you might even be able to offer them to fans as a "limited" edition..piece of memorabilia?) I really enjoy your blog, btw!

Well, if I may chime in here -
 
The Gulf Coast Archive and Museum of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender 
 History, Inc. will always take cassettes.  As a founding member of the  
group, I will make sure that we will always have cassette players (and record  
players, for that matter) to play the original recordings the way they were 
 recorded.  The sound quality, and sometimes the lack of it, has much to do 
 with the history of the music.  It can tell of the hardships that were  
involved in creating our early tunes.  We would be more than happy to take  in 
and lovingly cherish all music in any form.

want "quantities" of a donated item,  the option of you tracking down the 
whole list of these archives (and I'm not  sure where that list is) would be 
more work than most might want. [Of course  you would want to assure the 
Lesbian Herstory Archives gets a couple copies of  each; their tape collection 
is superb.] 
 
Okay, sorry, I know I gave you more of a  discussion than a solution....:)
 
Oh, for those out there who have  collections of tapes by GLBT artists, and 
are ready to throw them  away...please, ask me first, I may take the off 
your hands and at least you'd  know they are ending up in an archives that 
appreciates them. I've "inherited"  two or three collections like this in the 
past, and loved  it.

Hi All,
     As I announced last night on Facebook the film festival is at this moment cancelled. The festival was scheduled for June 17, 18, and 19. The venue we had last year is now not going to be available. I have a few and I mean few leads for a local venue which I will check out. However I am not convinced based on attendance last year and the local GLBT politics which make even letting people know about an event next to impossible. I think that there may be a better fit for the festival than here in Roanoke. A few emailed last year asking about the event being a moveable on with regard to location. As I answered last year I am open to that. So if you have any interest in the festival being in your city, just email me for details and we will see what can be done.
    My apologies to those who have submitted and have sent submission intent. I will do what I can to see this event happen.

"Amazon 35" is a CD devoted to honoring the legacy of Maxine Feldman, on the 35th anniversary of her song "Amazon." The CD's Executive Producer Judith Casselberry discusses the project, its inspiration and goals. Part 2 this month is a Tribute to David Gurland, a NYC pop/cabaret artist who sadly died last month, of a brain aneurysm, at age 43. His music of course will live on. And Part 3 of the show has no focus whatsoever, except for me to share good music by GLBT artists.
