Message-ID: <8CE1F5F9E951A79-1DE4-5ADA@web-mmc-d02.sysops.aol.com> "THIS WAY OUT: the international lesbian & gay radio magazine" Program #1,218 - distributed 8/1/11 Airs on more than 200 local stations around the world... or Listen now via our free podcasts at http://www.thiswayout.org (hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle) Bear witness to the dawn of New York's "summer of love"; The UN Human Rights chief celebrates Aussie and world LGBT history; A government official orders a "homo hunt" in Ghana; ECOSOC likes ILGA again, Uganda revives its "kill the gays" bill, Turkish Cypriots bust two men under their "unused" sodomy law, Italian Deputies are in denial about discrimination, and more global LGBT news - In "NewsWrap": It took 17 years, but the U.N. Economic & Social Council has restored the consultative status of ILGA, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association... multiple reports warn of the revival and impending consideration in Uganda?s newly-seated parliament of the internationally infamous "kill the gays" bill... the arrest of two men in Nicosia for "unnatural intercourse" renews calls by Northern Cyprus activists for repeal of the island nation?s British colonial era sodomy law, while the Italian parliament?s lower house defeats a bill to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity... some four thousand celebrants enjoy the 10th annual Pride and Tolerance parade in Jerusalem absent (for the most part) the usual violent protests by religious fundamentalists... Colombia?s Constitutional Court gives lawmakers two years to extend civil marriage rights to same-gender couples, but six previous bills in Congress to do that have failed... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by JOHN TORRES & NATALIE PEOPLES). - Equality was worth the wait -- and worth the fight -- for hundreds of NEW YORK's same-gender couples on July 24th. SALIM RIZVI was among the wedding guests bearing witness on behalf of "Free Speech Radio News*". - In a new video message released this week, UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS HIGH COMMISSIONER NAVI PILLAY traces the origins of the LGBT rights debate at the world body, starting with 1994?s "Toonen v. Australia"; discusses the progress since then and what yet needs to be done; and underscores the U.N.?s commitment to the advancement of LGBT human rights. - Last week we reported that both the CHRISTIAN COUNCIL OF GHANA and THE COALITION OF MUSLIM COMMUNITY OF GHANA had held press conferences calling on the government to actively pursue and prosecute gays and lesbians. At least one official appears to have responded. "Free Speech Radio News"* anchor DANNY WOOD learned more about the situation from researcher CHARLOTTE WALKER-SAID of the Human Rights Program at the University of Chicago. We realize that most of you are not getting rich being musically true to yourselves. But in the past several years we've had very little financial support from LGBT performers to help keep our nonprofit group going. Can you join one other musician on this list and make an automatic online donation of $10 per month to improve that statistic? Please review the following:] LGBT community activist and "This Way Out" (TWO) contributor Rick Watts writes: "When I was first asked to contribute my voice to 'This Way Out's' critically-acclaimed 'NewsWrap' segment about 8 years ago, I was flattered -- honored, really -- to have the opportunity to help. Much like when TWO's founding producer Greg Gordon interviewed Harvey Milk shortly after his election in 1978 (a CD copy of which TWO will be happy to send you by the way -- see the "Thank you gifts" listed on our website, thiswayout.org), little did we know how far the world would come -- or that he'd still be doing this all these years later ... and on a nonprofit shoe-string budget that barely meets production costs. But our community still has a long way to go. And it's only with the contributions from people like Greg ... like me ... and like YOU ... that this award-winning program is able to stay on the air on over 200 radio stations around the world, and globally via short-wave radio and the internet. "You can easily set up a modest monthly online contribution that won't take a big chunk out of your finances, but will greatly help TWO's, by clicking on the link at thiswayout.org. "Kermit the Frog likes to sing "It's not easy being green." But in WAY too many places, it's not easy being gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. TWO has reported the latest news from many of them in the recent past: a proposed 'homo hunt' in Ghana, the brutal murder of Ugandan activist David Kato, efforts to suppress free expression in Malaysia, and the rise of 'corrective rape' in South Africa to name a few. You really get an appreciation for just how valuable a resource TWO is when you see an email or letter from one of us living under circumstances like these, just for daring to be honest about whom we love. "I myself grew up in a time and place where it was not safe to be out and honest about who I am. So I felt that once I'd taken that step out of my closet, I had a duty to give back with my time, my sweat, my talents such as they are -- AND MY DOLLARS. And now I'm coming out to you again: as a 28 year survivor of HIV/AIDS, I've had more than my share of challenges to my health and financial well-being. But I don't let that stop me from giving back and giving forward. In fact (in addition to good medical care) the hope I get from being an active part of my community is what's kept me alive all these years. "It's the same hope that comes from witnessing the actions of activists like Britain's Clare Dimyon, Russia's Nikolai Alekseev, and the U.S.' Lt. Dan Choi; the hope in the astute political humor of Kate Clinton, the HIV/AIDS advice of Jack Mackenroth, and the gender law-breaking of Kate Bornstein; the hope that inspires the artistry of singer/songwriters k.d. lang and Lady Gaga, the LGBT anthems of Maxine Feldman and Steven Grossman, and the films of writer/director Richard Levine ("Every Day") and actor Ewan McGregor and writer/director Mike Mills ("Beginners"). It's the same hope that led my own roommate, after hearing these voices on TWO, to take just a few seconds with a few clicks to set up an automatic monthly on-line donation. I have high hopes that you'll join him right now by logging on to thiswayout.org! "Our world-wide LGBT community depends on TWO for a connection to you and me -- their LGBT brothers and sisters who are (relatively) free to be you and me. TWO runs a tight ship financially, but production and distribution costs are what they are, CD's have to be bought, rent has to be paid, and the lights have to stay on if our voice is to keep being heard by those who need it for hope to carry on in their own struggles in their own communities. And that's where YOU AND I come in! Think of what you waste on a weekly or daily basis on coffee, an extra drink at your local watering hole, or (if you smoke) on cigarettes. Now ... how about putting that money to GOOD use -- for your community. For a one-time donation, click that link on our website... and if you scroll down there, you'll find the aforementioned Harvey Milk CD and other 'thank you' gifts available only from TWO. ?You can also postal mail your donation (tax deductible in the U.S.) to P.O. Box 38327; Los Angeles, CA 90038 USA. "Thank you for helping us keep lit a sign for LGBT people everywhere that points with an arrow to a better day ... a sign that says, if you'll pardon the pun, 'This Way Out'." --Rick Watts LGBT community activist AND VERY PROUD "This Way Out" supporter! His latest is an autobiographical one-man show based on the book of the same name entitled "MY TRIP DOWN THE PINK CARPET." Message-ID: ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Hancock Sent: Monday, August 08, 2011 5:45 PM Subject: FW: The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain... Read this and then you choose what to do. The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people; it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government - lest it come to dominate our lives and interests. - Patrick Henry - The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971...before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land...all because of public pressure. I'm asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.. In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around. Congressional Reform Act of 2011 1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office. 2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose. 3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do. 4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%. 5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people. 6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people. 7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work. If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Maybe it is time. THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!! Message-ID: <8CE29D6FBC8E1CB-1128-6427@webmail-d139.sysops.aol.com> "THIS WAY OUT: the international lesbian & gay radio magazine" Program #1,220 - distributed 8/15/11 Airs on more than 200 local stations around the world... or Listen now via our free podcasts at http://www.thiswayout.org (hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle) Transitions intersect on "Gun Hill Road"; A DOMA-driven decision divides a gay U.S.-Aussie bi-national couple; Tales of immigration, injustice and love abound in "Torn Apart"; British unrest unleashes anti-gay rage, homophobes are kept in "Czech? at Prague's first Pride, "cure" quacks proliferate in Africa and Europe, Aussies keep parenting & marriage in mind, and more LGBT news - In "NewsWrap": London's venerable Gay's the Word bookstore is among the businesses targeted and damaged during riots that rocked Britain this week, as are "Gay Village" clubs and shops in Birmingham and Manchester... thousands celebrate Pride for the first time in Prague, despite Czech government leaders' "deviant" critiques, while the Dutch Defense Ministry floats its own boat for the first time in Amsterdam's unique Pride procession down one of the city's historic canals... the Presbyterian Church of Ghana announces that it's opening "therapy centers" to "cure" and "rehabilitate" gays and lesbians, and the promotion of discredited "reparative therapy" spreads in Europe... Chil??s politically conservative President Sebasti?n Pi?era formally sends a bill to Congress that would create civil unions for same-gender and heterosexual couples... openly lesbian Australian Finance Minister Penny Wong, who has consistently supported her Labor Party's opposition to marriage equality, announces that her longtime partner is expecting a child, and the gay male couple featured in a controversial condom promotion in Queensland hopes civil marriage for Australian same-gender couples becomes a reality sometime soon as they become foster parents of a 9-year-old boy... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by NATALIE PEOPLES and JOHN TORRES). - The Obama Administration may consider the DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT unconstitutional, but its own immigration agency is still using the law to hammer bi-national lesbian and gay couples. AUSTRALIAN citizen ANTHONY JOHN MAKK has been ordered to leave the U.S., and his husband of many years, BRADFORD WELLS, by August 25th. Citizenship and Immigration Services refused to acknowledge that Makk is the sole caregiver for Wells, who has AIDS. In response to the couple's application for Makk's permanent residency, CIS said only that DOMA prevented the federal government from qualifying their 2004 Massachusetts civil marriage for benefits. Wells and Makk hope an appeal of the decision will buy them more time, but at this point there could be a nasty ending to the compelling tale they told ?Current TV's? David Shuster this week. - Other stories of immigration and injustice are recounted in "TORN APART: UNITED BY LOVE, DIVIDED BY LAW" by Judy Rickard. The recently published book caught the eye of "This Way Out" commentator JANET MASON. - A finalist for the esteemed Jury Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival "GUN HILL ROAD" was selected to open both of the top U.S. LGBT Film Festivals (Frameline in San Francisco and Outfest in Los Angeles) on its way to U.S. theaters this month. The much buzzed about film is the story of a family in transition. It's the story of a young man exploring his gender and sexuality in an intolerant and judgmental world, and his exploration's impact on his relationship with his parents and himself. Along with preview clips featuring HARMONY SANTANA as "Michael/Vanessa" and ESAI MORALES as her father "Enrique," "This Way Out's" STEVE PRIDE brings the 411 from the multi-award-winning film's writer/director RASHAAD ERNESTO GREEN [www.gunhillroad.com]. ******************************************************** => Please log on to www.thiswayout.org to contribute to our nonprofit group [a tax-deductible charitable donation in the U.S.]. Robert Segwanyi, a Ugandan gay man seeking asylum in the U.K., gets a last-minute reprieve from being sent back to his notoriously homophobic homeland... hundreds of LGBT people make history in Narayanghat, a primarily rural area of Nepal, with a first-ever rights demonstration outside the cosmopolitan capital of Katmandu... a transgender woman who underwent Cuba's first state-sanctioned gender-reassignment surgery legally marries a gay man in what is a political as well as a celebratory ceremony in Havana... (hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle) Boys & girls who live "outside the box" and the families who love them; A lesbian judge takes her custody case to the Inter-American Court, hundreds march against South African township anti-lesbian hate crimes, Uganda's cabinet is at odds with parliament on the "Kill the Gays" bill, Sharia separates a married Indonesian lesbian couple, Australian MPs and the PM palaver about marriage equality, and more LGBT news - In "NewsWrap": The Inter-American Court of Human Rights hears its first-ever LGBT-related case as judge and lesbian mother Karen Atala tries to regain custody of the 3 daughters removed from her care by the Supreme Court of Chile... hundreds march on a Johannesburg, South Africa township police station demanding action against and full investigations of escalating so-called anti-queer "corrective" rapes and hate murders... the Ugandan cabinet and parliamentary representatives send mixed signals on the fate of the country's infamous "Kill the Gays" bill... authorities in the Sharia law-governed Indonesian province of Aceh annul the legal marriage of a lesbian couple and threaten them with beheading; several members of the Australian parliament discuss their constituents' views on marriage equality, while Prime Minister Julia Gillard meets for the first time with LGBT activists and supporters to discuss the issue... analysis of the 2010 U.S. Census by the Williams Institute, a highly-regarded LGBT "think tank," reveals an over-all fifty percent increase across the nation during the last decade of self-identified cohabiting same-gender couples... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, produced by BEN CARON & STEVE PRIDE, and reported this week by BEN CARON & ROBERT LEBLANC, capped by a personal message about his "TWO" website posting from veteran "NewsWrap" reporter RICK WATTS). - The jury in the high-profile BRANDON MCINERNEY murder trial began its deliberations on August 26th in Southern California. There's no question that at age 14 McInerney shot his 15-year-old classmate LAWRENCE KING twice in the back of the head. McInerney's defense team argued that he and the other boys "did not feel safe in the school" because they were "victimized" and "humiliated" by King, who occasionally wore makeup and high-heeled boots. That's the most extreme version of the kind of irrational homo- and trans-phobia that THE YOUTH AND GENDER MEDIA PROJECT is designed to combat. SONALI KOLHATKAR hosted the man behind this unusual effort, director/editor JONATHAN SKURNICK, who shared clips from his two short films, "I'M JUST ANNEKE" and "THE FAMILY JOURNEY" (from "Uprising" on KPFK-FM/Los Angeles, with production assistance by MARTINA STEINER).
