Martin Sheridan, a friend and the owner of the nearby Ear Inn, said Mister Hill was in his mid-60s and died after collapsing on his way to an East Side hospital. He said Mister Hill lived on The Upper East Side. Mister Hill started his career in the late 1970s, managing Manhattan clubs like the popular Kenny's Castaways and The Bitter End. In 1984 he became a manager and talent booker at The Cat Club, which Patrick Kenny. who owned Kenny's Castaways, had started. The roster of musicians who appeared at The Cat Club reads like a track list for VH1's "I Love The 80s:" David Bowie, Duran Duran, Jane's Addiction and others. The Cat Club closed in the early '90s, and Mister Hill opened Don Hill's in 1993. A dingy nightspot at Greenwich and Spring Streets, it showcased local bands like The Lunachicks and Psychotica, in addition to well-known acts like Iggy Pop and Green Day. The musician Michael H., a longtime friend of Mister Hill's, said The Strokes, before they were famous, were once kicked off the stage at the club when their lead singer, Julian Casablancas, poured beer on a monitor. The club also hosted hedonistic dance parties, like Squeezebox, which catered to a gay clientele, but was open to all; BeavHer, aimed at models and celebrities; and MisShapes; which started the career of the D.J. trio of the same name. "The thing about Don is that scenes erupted around him," said Bebe Buell, who has been singing at Hill's since 1998. She described Hill's as "a perfect rock'n'roll smorgasbord." Mister Hill recently sold the club to Nur Khan and Paul Sevigny, but could still be found on his stool at the bar every night. Complete information about Mister Hill's early years was unavailable, but friends said his full name was Donald Mulvahill. Friends also said he is survived by a sister, Diane. and a brother, Robert. He was the last of the long-haired, coke-snorting generation of club managers who was completely oblivious to sexual and gender orientation and simply saw talent as talent. He encouraged gay/straight fusion in his audiences by exposing everyone to everything, as long as it was good, seeing the crowd that supports unsigned bands and cult acts as the minority group which he served. I first worked with him at the Cat Club, played several Cherry Vanilla reunions at Don Hill's and was honored to join the Squeezbox Band backing Marc "Tainted Love" Almond there. Although the Cat Club was so dominant for a moment in time as a record company showcase that stars like Chaka Khan would get up unannounced in the middle of a night and sing a couple of songs, he will probably be best remembered for the Squeezebox Band which became "Hedwige and the Angry Inch". Four Los Angeles "millennials" -- SOPHIE GOLDSTEIN, RAULSTON "EDDIE" HENRY, DANI RACHMANN, and MARIO PEREGRINO -- talk about their role models, their politics, and their visions of the future with This Way Out's BEN CARON. - A "RAINBOW MINUTE" honors the lives of LADY ELEANOR BUTLER and SARAH PONSONBY, a.k.a. the "Ladies of Llangollen" (produced by JUDD PROCTER and BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by GARTH ELLIS). - SARAH WATERS' award-winning novels have envisioned lesbian life in distant and not-so-distant historical periods, and, largely due to their BBC television adaptations, have won a major mainstream audience. She chats with "This Way Out" U.K. correspondent ROSIE WILBY about writing romantic yesteryear stories in a very contemporary literary market. ******************************************************** => Please log on to www.thiswayout.org to make a donation now to our nonprofit group. It features some of the usual characters (Erin Hall on cell & Rob Bailey rockin' the axe) plus some cameos by: Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope, Coast of Utopia, Goonies!) Tony Garnier (Bob Dylan) Brian Delaney (New York Dolls) Nigel Harrison (Blondie) Marty Beller (They Might Be Giants) We can't wait to get it to you. ETA TBA. And, Kate Moira Ryan and I had a wildly productive time in Palo Alto, working under the gracious auspices of Theatreworks. We're still plugging away at our rockin' theater piece about The Weather Underground (60's radicals, not meteorology website). Way back when I started GGW, I knew the day might come when some yahoo troublemaker would try to censor us with the dirty trick of equating "lgbt" with "adult". This unfair labeling, with its scarlet letter "over 18 only - adult content" warning, has been the undoing of many yahoo LGBT groups in the past. I also knew that when I protested to Yahoo - that they would immediately examine the entire GGW group site (photos, files, links, etc) including the entire 6 year long archive of member posts - in search of anything with "adult" content - with which to catch us . This is why, over the years, I strove to keep the focus of our group music-related, instrument-related or otherwise related to the LGBT music/arts/culture/political community. This is why I would always delete links to any "adult" sites, etc. And examine us they did! But they could find nothing that merited us being labelled "adult" over "music". To Yahoo's credit, they have come a long way. I notice, more and more in the Yahoo news section, nearly every day's headline news includes at least one piece of interest the the LGBT community. And now they (along with the world...) are coming to learn that "LGBT-related" does not necessarily mean "adult-related". They did the right thing. luv - RU _______________________________________________ Musician/producer Robert Urban here. i am the founder/moderator of GAYGUITARISTS YAHOO GROUP. The group is for LGBT and LGBT-friendly professional instrumental musicians. Just as there are lgbt people of all ages there are lgbt musicians of all ages. I want to know specifically WHY it was changed to adult.
