"THIS WAY OUT: the international lesbian & gay radio magazine"
Program #1,179 - distributed 11/1/10
Airs on more than 200 local stations around the world... or
Listen now via our free podcasts at

(hosted by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
The picketing Phelps klan fundraises for its enemies;
Drama demonstrates diversity in workplace workshops;
The Pentagon asks but the troops don't care, Baja California's marriage
ban may not be PRI-ordained, U.S. feds warn schools of their legal duty
to protect LGBT students, a British school all but banishes bullies
with liberating lessons, and more global LGBT news

- In "NewsWrap": The much-anticipated October 29th ruling from the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on whether or not to extend its temporary stay of a lower court's injunction barring further enforcement of Don't Ask Don't Tell has apparently been delayed until after the November 2nd midterm elections, but the unprecedented Pentagon survey of military personnel and their families conducted as part of its ten-month-long study to determine how best to implement legislative repeal of the policy reportedly reveals that serving with "out" compatriots is not of much concern to the troops or their kin... the proposed constitutional amendment to ban recognition of same-gender marriages in the Mexican state of Baja California may not be a done deal after a change of political party control in the Chamber of Deputies and in the five state municipalities that must ratify it... the U.S. Department of Education warns federally-funded schools and colleges that the Title IX civil rights law requires them to protect LGBT students from verbal and physical abuse, as Clint McCance, the school board member in Pleasant Plains, Arkansas under fire for urging gay kids to kill themselves, announces his resignation... a secondary school in Britain's north London says it's virtually eliminated anti-LGBT bullying on campus by adding gay and lesbian history lessons to the curriculum (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by RICK WATTS and CHRIS WILSON).

- Four moms in RICHMOND, VIRGINIA found a creative way to unite their community and raise funds for local LGBTQ and Jewish groups when the infamous Fred Phelps-led WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH infected their town with its hateful homophobic and anti-Semitic picketing. "This Way Out" correspondent CAROLINE JACKSON [WRIR-FM] spoke with SARAH, PATIENCE, JESSICA, and SARA about their highly-successful work, and the new website they created to help people in cities around the world duplicate their efforts (with brief music from "Pennies From Heaven" by BILLIE HOLIDAY) [www.penniesinprotest.com].

- The Mission of HAD TO BE PRODUCTIONS is to increase awareness of workplace issues and inspire active empathy through original theatrical presentations and workshops designed to enlighten, entertain and move an organization forward. The two person troupe of CARRIE GIBSON and TONY CURRY have toured their unique works across the U.S. to government agencies, corporations, educational institutions, and conferences with audiences as small as a dozen to over 1,000 people. "This Way Out's" STEVE PRIDE and SHERI LUNN caught up with them after an SRO performance at the recent Out & Equal Workplace Summit in Los Angeles (with brief music from "People Are People" by DEPECHE MODE) [www.hadtobe.com].
