SEGMENT #2 – The organization GAYS AND LESBIANS OF ZIMBABWE gained global attention in 1995 when a violent mob drove them out of the Zimbabwe International Book Fair. The activists of GALZ believed that a high profile event with the theme "Human Rights and Justice" emphasizing "Freedom of Expression and of the Press" would be the perfect place to get their message across. They had been barred from access to the media. Their struggle to participate in the Book Fair went on for years. They’ve also endured hearing officials like President Robert Mugabe repeatedly call them "worse than pigs and dogs." But their movement grew to encompass AIDS education and a host of other services, including a GALZ Resource Centre in Harare. GALZ and its work have come into the spotlight again with the recent release of the U.S. State Department's annual human rights report. It documents a rise of so-called "corrective rape" used against lesbians and gay men in Zimbabwe. Since when does a hate crime become a "cure" for anything? GALZ Programmes Manager for Gender FADZAI MUPARUTSA explained the phenomenon to VIOLET GONDA on her SW Radio Africa “Hotseat” program (with production thanks to FRIEDA WERDEN).
