The story of a trans-mom and her more fortunate son;
Queer activists blast Obama on a "Don't Ask" bombshell, Hawai'i civil
unions await gubernatorial action, LGBT groups join the Arizona anti-
immigrant law condemnation chorus, a third Turkish gay group wins
existence rights, Bolivia's President apologizes, and more LGBT news

- In "NewsWrap": U.S. LGBT rights groups angrily react to comments by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, backed up by the White House, cautioning Congress not to pass "Don't Ask Don't Tell" repeal legislation this year... a civil unions bill unexpectedly passes in Hawai'i and awaits action by Republican Governor Linda Lingle, while U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker schedules June 16th for closing arguments in the closely-followed federal lawsuit challenging California's Proposition 8... LGBT groups and newly-out Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin join the chorus of civil rights organizations condemning Arizona's so-called "papers please" anti-immigrant bill... a third LGBT rights group in Turkey, the Izmir-based Black Pink Triangle, wins the legal right to exist.. Bolivian President Evo Morales apologizes for comments last week claiming that eating female hormone-injected chicken makes men gay... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by SHERI LUNN and MICHELE PLEASANT) + A brief report on May 2nd "Don't Ask Don't Tell" protest arrests near the White House [with a soundbite from former DNC Chair HOWARD DEAN's impromptu remarks].

- While FRED "God Hates Fags" PHELPS is preparing to defend his pickets at the funerals of servicemembers before the U.S. Supreme Court, his estranged son NATE is speaking out about life inside the family cult. The Topeka, Kansas-based WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH is infamous for its venomous homophobia and harassment, and it has virtually no members outside Phelps' own captive brood. Out of thirteen siblings, Nate Phelps is one of only three who have managed to get away permanently. As their three-part conversation nears an end, "This Way Out" correspondent HEATHER KITCHING wonders why (from "Queer FM" on CiTR/Vancouver, B.C., and with intro/outro music from R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion"). - A transwoman talks about becoming not only a woman but a mother, and her son talks about how she's done. Our TAREN JAMES delivers the story.
