Edison Theatre, Boston?s Keshet Cabaret, Brooklyn's BAM cafe and Austria's KlezMORE Festival, with broadcast appearances including CNN, PBS, WFMU, Northeast Public Radio, plus studio sessions for The L Word as well as a certain Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum glam pop band. Isle of Klezbos hosts and performs at KlezBiGay Pride shows each June, with past venues including Joe?s Pub, City Winery, Vienna?s Porgy & Bess nightclub, Barbes Brooklyn, and our first KlezBiGay Pride at CB?s Gallery [acoustic sister club of the late lamented CBGB] in 1999. This year we are pleased to return to our East Village roots -- once again performing in the spacious & gracious El Sol Brilliante community garden of diverse delights, nestled with lush, creative seating -- for our twelfth annual multi-generational, multi-cultural, all-inclusive community celebration of KlezBiGay Pride Month. As in our 2008 El Sol Brilliante debut, Isle of Klezbos welcomes back Circus Amok?s Jennifer Miller as our gender-juggling Mistress of Ceremony. Iceland's parliament unanimously passes a marriage equality bill, while Teresa Pires and Helena Paixao become the first same-gender couple to legally wed in Portugal... Malawi's embattled queer couple Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza breaks up, and Monjeza is reportedly now dating a woman... more than 3 million celebrate LGBT Pride in Sao Paulo in what's said to be the world's biggest such event, while an estimated 100,000 at Tel Aviv Pride honor the victims of last year's murderous rampage on a youth support group... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by JENN MAHONEY and PAM MARSHALL). - There was news this week in the PROPOSITION 8 saga, this time regarding the high profile federal lawsuit testing the constitutionality of CALIFORNIA's anti-marriage equality initiative. According to published reports, it will only be a few weeks after hearing closing arguments on June 16th that presiding Judge Vaughn Walker will issue his ruling in the closely watched trial. The case is ultimately expected to go to the U.S. Supreme Court. When the measure passed in 2008 by a slim margin, Mormons were quick to take credit for its success. During the fight, the Mormon Church media-engine, with mega-million dollar public relations and political consulting firm support, barraged Californians with a suffocating number of misleading television and radio ads and door-to-door campaigns staffed by the Mormon-affiliated National Organization for Marriage. A new documentary, "8: THE MORMON PROPOSITION", investigates the behind the scenes but pivotal role played by the Latter Day Saints in swaying the California electorate - an investigation that recently led the California Fair Political Practices Commission to impose a fine on the Church for campaign finance violations. Along with preview clips from the film, "This Way Out's" STEVE PRIDE speaks with its producer and narrator DUSTIN LANCE BLACK (Oscar winning screenwriter for "Milk") and two of its subjects: FRED KARGER, founder of the LGBT advocacy group Californians Against Hate (www.CaliforniansAgainstHate.com), and LINDA STAY, the Mormon mother of a married gay son (www.MomsForEquality.com) [includes outro music from "Married" performed by ALAN CUMMING]. Cameron commemorates Pride with coalition commitments; Rising hate crimes raise concerns in Canada and Puerto Rico, 3 U.S. federal departments make incremental Pride month progress, bogus gay blood donation bans remain in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, and Germany, a Dublin artist draws Catholic ire, and more LGBT news - In "NewsWrap": Closing arguments cap the closely-watched federal trial in San Francisco challenging the constitutionality of California's marriage equality-banning Proposition 8... the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires funding applicants to comply with state and local laws banning anti-LGBT bias, the U.S. Department of Justice says that gays and lesbians abused by their domestic partners are protected under the Violence Against Women Act, and the U.S. State Department issues new guidelines removing reassignment surgery as a precondition for the issuance of passports to trans people in their self-identified gender, but a panel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends maintaining a ban on gay men donating blood, while policies about such donations in France, Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan, Sweden, Spain, and Italy vary... Statistics Canada reports a doubling of anti-queer hate crimes from 2007 to 2008, while the government of Puerto Rico creates a commission to examine anti-queer violence and how to curb it... and a painting of the Pope blessing a gay male couple riles Roman Catholic Church officials in Ireland and around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by SHERI LUNN & MICHELE PLEASANT). - BRITAIN?s new Conservative Party PRIME MINISTER DAVID CAMERON delivered his LGBT PRIDE MONTH greetings to a gathering of invited community leaders on June 16th in the Rose Garden at Number 10 Downing Street. He also spoke on behalf of his government partner, Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg. The right-left coalition was born of a nearly unprecedented split election, and it seems to have pointed the Tories in what was already an increasingly more queer-supportive direction. Cameron's remarks at the reception were recorded by a "Pink News" reporter in the crowd. - Lawyers for the plaintiffs declared that CALIFORNIA's ban on same-gender marriage created by PROPOSITION 8 violates the U.S. Constitution and discriminates against lesbian and gay couples. Lawyers for the defense said they did not need evidence to prove that marriage is between a man and a woman, claiming that every society defines it that way. Those were some of the closing arguments in the first federal trial challenging the ballot initiative that eliminated California's state Supreme Court-ordered marriage equality. Attorneys summed up their cases in front of a packed SAN FRANCISCO courtroom on June 16th. With comments by many of the principals in the case, Pacifica Radio's MARK MERICLE and CHRISTOPHER MARTINEZ offered comprehensive on-scene coverage of the story on that night's California Evening News. ********************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.), and is supported by a grant from the Kicking Assets Fund of the Tides Foundation, and through tax-deductible donations from our listeners -- thank you! ==> Please visit www.thiswayout.org to help keep "This Way Out" on the air -- and choose from several unique LGBT music, history and culture "thank you gift" CDs. ******************************************************** On the air since April 1988, "This Way Out" is the multi-award-winning internationally distributed weekly gay and lesbian radio newsmagazine. This is a reserve auction. All the proceeds from the auction benefit the musician?s union Local 1000?s and its Emergency Relief Fund which provides assistance to musicians who fall onto hard times due to illness, natural disaster, and economic problems. Proceeds will also help fund the Local?s organizing efforts to bring union benefits (such as health care and pensions) to working musicians throughout the acoustic music world. View a video of Pete signing and playing the banjo at: _http://local1000.com/auction-for-pete-seeger-signed-banjo_ (http://local1000.com/auction-for-pete-seeger-signed-banjo) About the Vega Longneck Banjo >From Deering Banjos _http://www.deeringbanjos.com/vega-longneck_ (http://www.deeringbanjos.com/vega-longneck) Pete Seeger invented the long neck banjo when he decided to have a luthier cut his neck and insert 3 additional frets into the length of it. Instead of tuning the newly revised banjo in G, he was able to tune it to an E (Tuned E,B,E,G#,B) which allowed him to sing in that lower key. A capo can be put on at the third fret and the banjo can be played in standard G tuning. With 3 extra frets, this low tuned (E) banjo not only sounds beautiful as a solo instrument, but it accompanies the voice with a deep, full and sparkling sound. The Vega Long Neck is made with Deering's hand made, classic Tubaphone tone-ring. The solid brass bracket band is hand fitted to the violin grade three-ply rim. This pot design gives the Vega Long Neck Banjo a round full tone that sustains with a pure and clear sparkle. Whether you want to re-create the folk music of the 1960's or musically travel into unexplored banjo territory or simply have a superb instrument to accompany vocals, the Vega Long Neck banjo will provide the versatile, sweet, beautiful banjo voice that has inspired generations of singers and players with its sparkling, deep and full sound; This banjo is one of the true classics of the 20th century and the new millennium. From len at stonewallsociety.com Mon Jun 28 12:18:29 2010 From: len at stonewallsociety.com (Len Rogers SWS) Date: Mon, 28 Jun 2010 13:18:29 -0400 Subject: [OutVoice] Pride In The Arts International GLBT Film Festival, Warm Reception, Close Outcome! Message-ID: The three day event culminated Sunday evening with strong voter appreciation and activity. The community of Roanoke warmly embraced this new event to the local GLBT Community with steady attendance, positive feedback, and many welcoming sentiments to festival organizer Len Rogers of StoneWall Society. Shadowbox, the venue was a great fit for the Festival. Jason and his staff were more then professional and made all feel welcome. The Festival Favorites were announced at the closing screening on Sunday night. Favorites were determined solely by attendee vote. Each festival attendee was provided with a ballot for that particular screening. Each ballot had to be validated with the attendee ticket number to be counted. It was encouraging to see how serious the festival goers were about completing and turning in their ballots. A true testament to the films included and the serious view these festival attendees had of their part in the festival. The final votes determined in some relatively close counts that Festival Favorites are; Festival Favorite Short Film is "Reunion" by Dennis Hensley Festival Favorite Music Video is "Living Out Proud" by SUGARBEACH of Canada Festival Favorite Feature Film is "Woman In A Man's Suit" by Anthony Greene about Georgie Jessup. Congratulations to the festival favorites! As well congratulations and thanks to all who submitted and attended the festival. Response to the festival was so overwhelming positive that is has already been decided this will be an annual event. In depth coverage with photographs will be available at www.prideinthearts.com on later Monday. For "This Way Out" commentator JANET MASON, the collection represents an honoring, and in some ways a resurrection, of a very emotional era (with intro/outro music from "They Are Falling All Around Us" performed by the late MICHAEL CALLEN, from his "Legacy" CD, with CRIS WILLIAMSON & HOLLY NEAR). - An iconic band's roots revival [excerpts from "Honey Money" and "Pack of Newport" from SONIA & DISAPPEAR FEAR's "BLOOD, BONES & BALTIMORE"] accompany two debut CDs ("Think About You" and "Beyond Forever" from MAMA'S BLACK SHEEP's "UNMARKED HIGHWAY", and "I'll Give You (What You Want) " and "How Do You Know (You're in Love)" from RYAN STATES' "STRANGE TOWN"] in this month's "AUDIOFILE" (with comments by Laura Cerulli of Mama's Black Sheep and Ryan States, hosted by JD DOYLE & CHRIS WILSON, and written and produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM).
