LGBT people and their supporters in several cities in India celebrate "365 Without 377"... the U.S. Supreme Court rules 5-to-4 that a Christian student group that bars membership to LGBT people or those who advocate for them can be denied official recognition and financial support by a public law school... ubiquitous marches, rallies and demonstrations to celebrate queer Pride during the traditional month of June include Istanbul, Zagreb, Paris, Berlin, Tijuana, Mexico City, Sofia, Boston, San Francisco, Nashville, Augusta (Georgia), Chicago, and New York City, but the rabidly anti-queer American Family Association calls the honoring of pre-teen LGBT rights supporter Will Phillips as Grand Marshall of the Northwest Arkansas Pride Parade in Fayetteville "child abuse"... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by RICK WATTS & SHERI LUNN). - U.S. SUPREME COURT nominee ELENA KAGAN passed through her confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee this week with flying colors. However, with a career primarily in academia, she did not have a history of rulings from the bench for her Committee examiners to pour through. ALABAMA REPUBLICAN SENATOR JEFF SESSIONS tried to nail Kagan on her handling of campus military recruitment when she was the Dean of Harvard Law School, and REPUBLICAN SENATOR CHUCK GRASSLEY of IOWA tried to tempt Kagan into a debate on same-gender marriage. - Since 1998, ballot measures defining the legal status of same-gender couples have been placed before voters in 33 U.S. states. To what extent did voter intention change over the course of those political campaigns? Veteran queer rights activist ROBERTA SKLAR analyzes a recent study that may answer that question ? and have implications for LGBT activism around the world (with thanks to RITA GONZALES for production assistance, an introduction and outro tag by SHERI LUNN, and TOM GOSS singing "You Don't Question Love") [www.haasjr.org]. ********************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.), and is supported by a grant from the Kicking Assets Fund of the Tides Foundation, and through tax-deductible donations from our listeners -- thank you! ==> Please visit www.thiswayout.org to help keep "This Way Out" on the air -- and choose from several unique LGBT music, history and culture "thank you gift" CDs. ******************************************************** On the air since April 1988, "This Way Out" is the multi-award-winning internationally distributed weekly gay and lesbian radio newsmagazine. Last January, it occurred to me that I've never invited any of these artists to present a house concert. I'm an atheist, so why would I? Well, for one thing, their work is more about love, acceptance, and joy. Simple as that. I know their work well and know how much joy, encouragement, etc. they bring to our many Communities of Faith around the country. Saturday, July 24, 2010, one of the artists, Shawn Thomas, will present a house concert at my place in Brooklyn. Shawn's music is terrific, the message is strong and uplifting, and his performance style exceptional. The best way to understand him and his work it to visit his website which has many songs and videos. http://www.shawnthomasonline.com Look for the video, "You are here Lord" that has him tap dancing! I suggested he bring his taps but... No doubt some of you are disinterested in attending -- it's not church, BTW, think more Amy Grant as she crossed-over to pop mainstream; however, I'll bet all of you know someone who may really be interested in attending. Please invite them. It gets depressing having only a few attendees -- it's a reason I cut back on house concerts. But I love hosting them since I get to see favorites perform without the constraints of short sets in a noisy club and share my enthusiasm with like minded people. Saturday, July 24, 2010 Doors at 6:00 pm, performance at 7:00 pm FREE (There will be a tip basket for "love offerings" for Shawn) FREE BUFFET AND BEVERAGES Come hungry!!!
