Performing songwriter and kirtan chant artist Robin Renée is happy to announce the release of her "new" holiday song "Hare Krishna Christmas."  With one part an honoring of blended holiday traditions and one part parody ("A Holly Jolly Christmas"), "Hare Krishna Christmas" is fun, seasonal pop.  It is also a parody with a purpose: During the 2010 holiday season, 20% of download proceeds will go toward vegetarian donations to food banks for those in need.

Though long interested in Eastern tools for deepening consciousness like meditation and chant, one December Renée had a spiritual experience that moved her very swiftly toward a passion for kirtan chanting, a kind of yoga of sound.  It would have been easy for her to stay focused only on these newly found songs of devotion, but it was the holiday season and there were Christmas gifts to be bought. Getting caught in the bustle of the shopping crowds was a shock to the system, and the humor in the situation led to "Hare Krishna Christmas," which seemed to write itself effortlessly one evening as the tree was decorated.  To Renée, the song has come to not only celebrate her own East-meets-West spiritual life, but ultimately to honor the many expressions of fellowship and love across all winter holiday traditions. 

 

"I also love to sing it because it has an element of being just plain silly," says Renée, who is enjoying bringing an extra dose of laughter along with meaning to this time of year.
