"THIS WAY OUT: the international lesbian & gay radio magazine

Program #1,120 - distributed 9/14/09

(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)

Comedy queen Kate Clinton critiques the "gay agenda";

Carolyn Gage’s butch characters challenge theatrical convention;

Budapest Pride survives rioting protesters, a fugitive Turkish father's

on trial for the "honor killing" of his gay son, death threats drive a

U.S. lesbian soldier to Canada for asylum, Britain turns Turing's shame

into a hero's honor, and other global LGBT news

- In "NewsWrap": About 2,000 LGBT activists and their supporters brave violent protesters in a "Gay Dignity March" through central Budapest soon after Hungary's National Election Committee rejects a proposed voter referendum to outlaw "public advertisement of homosexuality"... a Turkish father who's in hiding is tried in absentia in Istanbul for the apparent "honor killing" of his gay son... a lesbian who deserted the U.S. Army after being repeatedly harassed and threatened by fellow soldiers seeks asylum in Canada... the Roman Catholic Church in Maine orders its priests to collect donations to support the November 3rd ballot measure to overturn the state's marriage equality law... British Prime Minister Gordon Brown issues a formal government apology for the persecution of gay World War II code-breaki
ng hero Alan Turing, who committed suicide after being convicted and chemically castrated in 1952 for "gross indecency" with another man... and other LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by CHRISTOPHER GAAL and RICK WATTS).

- In the pantheon of contemporary lesbian literati, playwright CAROLYN GAGE stands out not only as a performer and director, but as a teacher and theatre activist, too.  She's written eight books and over fifty-five plays, musicals, and one-woman shows. "This Way Out" correspondents DIXIE TREICHEL and JOHN TOWNSEND ["Fresh Fruit"/KFAI-Minneapolis-St. Paul] ask Gage about one of her most recent accomplishments, the Lambda Literary Award-winning "The Second Coming of Joan of Arc and Selected Plays," and her crusade to bring more gender-variant butch women to the stage and screen.

- KATE CLINTON is one lesbian feminist humorist who won't stand for standing still.  She joined us last time on "This Way Out" to talk about her new essay collection "I Told You So," her longtime partner Urvashi Vaid, and about the media's impact on the LGBT civil rights movement... and vice versa.  In this week’s conclusion, correspondent JOSY CATOGGIO ["Feminist Magazine"/KPFK-Los Angles] asks Clinton to critique the "gay agenda".
