"THIS WAY OUT: the international lesbian & gay radio magazine

Program #1,119 - distributed 9/7/09

(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)

Ang Lee takes "Woodstock" out of the closet;

Lesbian-feminist humorist Kate Clinton takes her comedy seriously;

Rome anti-violence protesters take to the streets, gay cruisers clash

with cops in Guangzhou, Japanese election results give LGBT activists

hope, Vermont's first same-gender couples wed but Maine and Washington

hopefuls wait for November 3rd, and other global LGBT news

- In "NewsWrap": More than a thousand march against escalating anti-LGBT violence in Rome, while about a hundred gay men clash with police in Guangzhou, China over a popular cruising park... the election of a left-leaning Government in Japan prompts hope for LGBT rights advances in Japan, while India's Government will reportedly not challenge July's Delhi High Court ruling striking down the country's anti-gay sex law... queer couples begin legally marrying in Vermont, but opponents in Maine stymie the start of same-gender weddings there, and "everything but marriage" domestic partnership law enhancements also face a November 3rd ballot test in Washington... MSNBCs RACHEL MADDOW reports on some interesting statistics that may, in fact, reveal the real "defense of marriage act"... and more LGBT news from around=2
0the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by CHRIS COLEMAN and MICHELE PLEASANT).

- Lesbian feminist humorist KATE CLINTON can once again say, "I Told You So" -- not just because she's one of the sharpest political wits in the U.S., but because that's the title of her new collection of essays. There's not a hot-button issue you can think of that she doesn’t take on, from baptism to waterboarding.  She's won the right to her opinions after 30 years of performing, and rabble-rousing in concert with her longtime partner, author/activist Urvashi Vaid.  Clinton chatted with "This Way Out" correspondents JOSY CATOGGIO and LYNN BALLEN ["Feminist Magazine"/KPFK-Los Angles] about the movement, the media... and models (Part 1, ends with a tease for next week's concluding Part 2).

- "TAKING WOODSTOCK" is the new film from Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee based on the memoirs of Elliot Tiber, who in the summer of 1969 came to terms with his sexuality while playing a pivotal role in bringing half a million people to his neighbor's farm for “3 Days of Peace & Music.”  STEVE PRIDE talks to stars DEMETRI MARTIN, LIEV SCHREIBER and filmmaker ANG LEE about the gay story behind the legendary cultural event (with clips from the film and intro/outro music from the soundtrack, "Freedom" by RICHIE HAVENS).
