"THIS WAY OUT: the international lesbian & gay radio magazine

Program #1,129 - distributed 11/16/09

(produced and hosted this week by Greg Gordon)

The life and death of gay-bashed "Two Spirits" teen Fred Martinez;

Homeless LGBT youth seek salvation;

ACT lawmakers hope their third civil unions try will be the charm, a

Buenos Aires judge OKs the marriage of a gay couple, a French lesbian

wins adoption rights, Salt Lake City passes Mormon-approved LGBT anti-

bias laws, an Arkansas pre-teen demands "justice for all", more news

- In "NewsWrap": Australian Capital Territory legislators hope their
third attempt will overcome federal objections to a civil unions law...
a judge in Buenos Aires, Argentina okays the legal marriage of a gay
couple, while a court in France orders adoption rights for a persistent
lesbian schoolteacher... the Church of Sweden consecrates Eva Brunne as
its first openly lesbian or gay bishop, as sexual orientation and
gender identity anti-bias protections are unanimously approved by Salt
Lake City, Utah lawmakers with the full endorsement of the Mormon
Church...10-year-old Will Phillips refuses to stand for the daily
pledge of allegiance to the flag at his Arkansas school until gays and
lesbians gain equal rights in "the country for which it stands"... and
more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and
reported this week by RICK WATTS and SANTINA GIORDANO).

- Homeless queer youth all-too-often fall through the cracks of
traditional assistance programs. In the first of a special 2-part
feature (to conclude next week), DIXIE TREICHEL and JOHN TOWNSEND [from
"Fresh Fruit" on KFAI-FM/Minneapolis-St. Paul] look for solutions to a
truly shameful situation (with comments this week by MINNESOTA STATE
SENATOR SCOTT DIBBLE and KIRSTEN ANDERSON and NICOLE MILLS of Lutheran
Social Services/www.lssmn.org).

- Fred Martinez was nádleehí, a male-bodied person with a feminine
nature – a special gift according to his ancient Navajo culture. He was
one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was
brutally murdered at 16 by a young man who bragged to friends that he
had "bug-smashed a fag." The documentary "TWO SPIRITS: Sexuality,
Gender, and the Murder of Fred Martinez" explores the life and death of
a boy who was also a girl, and the essentially spiritual nature of
gender and sexuality. STEVE PRIDE talks to director/producer LYDIA
NIBLEY about her film, Native American tradition, and the tragedy of a
promising young life cut short.
