The Shepards were among those to witness President Barack Obama?s signature on the Hate Crimes Prevention Act ? named to honor their son ? on October 28th [with an excerpt from Obama's signing remarks]. We did over 20 miles on foot with 50lb packs. There were some trails like this. But, I would say less than half. The difficult slopes, I was too busy to take pictures of... ? ? ? We are looking at this peak from another peak. We had clibmed from the other side of that up and down. It was so cold on that peak with all of our gear on, we were rushing to take a quick picture then we ran down the hill at close to top speed. Brrrrrr. ? ? yeah I now, its gorgeous, so that is why I did the trip. ? ? ? Thats my good friend Rich, he is a tri-Athlete. This was a birch farm. These were nice trails. He has talked me into going on fun trips like this over the years. He asked some other people to go, but I was the only one who said yes, I didnt really know what I was in for, I just knew it would be a challenge. And guess what, it was, we didnt see one other soul on those trails in the 3 days we went out. Oh, the weather wasnt very kind most of the time. BUt, as you can see it was worth it. ? Celestial.....sometimes we were actually above the clouds. ? ? ? Looks like a Bear Cave, my friend was pushing me out of the way and running when I was trying to take this picture...lol he said see those rocks inside, Bears pull those agaianst themselves to protext from the elements. Best not to wake them up if they are hibernating...lol ? ? These look like fresh bear tracks, oh my !!! Sorry if you are eating... ? ? Did I mentioned it rained a lot. Yes it did. Too bad you cant see this, its actuall a stream waterfalling into a long log dripping further down the stream. Its nice. Trust me...lol ? ? ? we camped right near here. It had a nice echo...Houston !! ( Houston Houston Houston Houston Houst hou hou hou? h h) ? ? Wicked Pretty right?? lol ? ? ? --------------- ? Hope you had a great Halloween as well !! ? ? ? I was a lion, as I am a Leo and my lover was a Lion Tamer....a shy lion tamer..lol (thats why no pic) ? Everyone brought a bottle of Grey good, in a barn with over 400 people, DJ'd by Tom Yaz, with video and catered food etc. Im enjoying Boston my friends...But, I am missing NYC and LA, London and Berlin and Roma and SF and vancouver...etc etc. ? ? I was actually roaring all night, staying in character as a true actor should..lol It also helped to get through the crowd sometimes, as it was so packed when we got there, we couldnt even move. It was one of the best parties and best times i have ever had. ? Now if you have actually read this far, I thank you , and would thank you even more if you read further...Take care, Ill see you soon, ? xo Houston ? ? ? Those Funny Lesbians: A Tribute to Lesbian Comedy http://www.queermusicheritage.com/nov2009.html What a romp preparing this show was. It?s a salute to both stand-up comedy and funny songs by lesbians, and in my feature interview Kate Clinton talks about the state of lesbian comedy and her own take on it. We?ll get right to the point: this is the time of year when the annual grant we received from the Kicking Assets Fund of the Tides Foundation runs out. We?ve applied for renewed funding, and based on their longtime support, we're optimistic about receiving another grant in March 2010. But we need your help to keep "This Way Out" on the air until then. You may ask: - Why don't you have paid advertising or ask for donations on the air? Because FCC regulations governing public radio in the U.S., where we originate, prohibit commercials. The FCC allows on-air fundraising only to benefit the station. For that reason, we can?t ask for donations to "This Way Out" during the program. - Why don't you charge stations a fee for the program? Because, from the beginning, we wanted to reach the widest possible audience, and several local stations that carry "This Way Out" can't afford to pay for programming; others have policies against doing that. - Why can't you get grants from other foundations? After more than 20 years on the air, we?ve been unable to secure new funding from the limited number of foundations that consider LGBT projects; fewer still fund ?media?. We?ve sent proposals to more than 25 foundations in recent years, but even requests for renewed funding from previous donors ? with the happy exception of the Kicking Assets Fund ? have been rebuffed. We've reduced our expenses to the bare necessities (not that they ever included "luxuries"); our full-time Coordinating Producer is collecting far less than half of the modest compensation authorized by our Board of Directors; our Associate Producer has gone virtually without any compensation at all; and the dozens of people who produce programming for ?This Way Out? do so as unpaid volunteers. Unlike other LGBT media, being on public radio means that open-minded non-gay listeners hear our voices and discover our humanity; our international LGBT ?NewsWrap? segment underscores our motto that ?an informed community is a strong community?; and ?This Way Out? is a vital lifeline for thousands of closeted people in every corner of the world, and often the only LGBT-supportive voice they hear. The ?critics? agree: ?Just wanted to pass on my deepest thanks and gratitude for your show. I love the international coverage, the humor, the music ? I love it all!? -H.C. New York, New York ?I heard tonight?s This Way Out for the first time ever. I'm not gay, but have gay friends; I'll tell them about this program. Keep up the good work.? -K.L. State College, Pennsylvania "Thank God I found you!" -Sampson Owerri, Nigeria ?Radio seems to be an exceptional medium for communicating our concerns to those who would rarely read a gay or lesbian periodical... Thanks for the terrific work you are doing." -Walter L. Williams, author of "The Spirit And The Flesh" ?I'm a 44 y.o. married male just confronting my homosexuality. I can't tell you what a moral boost your program is for me. I look forward to it every week. It's better than church.? -Neal Los Angeles, California "Live long This Way Out!" -Chetna Delhi, India Please add "This Way Out" to your annual holiday gift-giving list, or ? even if you don't prepare a list ? make a tax-deductible donation to help keep us going. If you'd like something tangible in return ? for yourself, or for unique holiday gift-giving ? ask for one or more of the special thank you CDs described below. Don't let "This Way Out" become a victim of these difficult economic times! Please use one of the PayPal buttons at our Web site, www.thiswayout.org, or postal-mail your check or money order to PO Box 38327, Los Angeles, CA 90038-0327, USA. We know that many are struggling ? but we also know that others are doing just fine. *Whatever* you can afford, please know how grateful everyone at ?This Way Out? will be ? and our estimated 400,000+ listeners around the world ? for your thoughtful donation. Please also share this appeal with others who could amplify your support. Thank you ? and all best wishes to you and yours for a happy holiday season and a healthy, prosperous, pleasurable and productive 2010. =============================================== THANK YOU GIFT CDs (all donations are in U.S. dollars) Chose one of these half-hour programs for each donation of $25; choose two for $50, etc: A CONVERSATION WITH HARVEY MILK In March 1978 now-"This Way Out" Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon traveled to Northern California to interview newly elected San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk. Their conversation covered civil rights activism, politics, and some of the gay personalities of the day. The Oscar-winning movie generated renewed interest in this historic figure. And, as you'll hear in this illuminating and highly entertaining half-hour interview with the pioneering LGBT civil rights hero, much of what Harvey had to say still resonates today. AUDIOFILE 2008 YEAR IN REVIEW As always, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender artists provided the "soundtrack" for the ongoing struggle by sexual minorities for equality around the world with an exceptional variety of gender-and-genre-bending music in 2008. And as always, limiting the artists they featured during the year to just a few was no easy task, but CHRIS WILSON, JD DOYLE and CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM share seven of their favorites during this 30-minute tunefest: excerpts from "Queer Blues," "Deja Vu Blues" and "I Ain't Ashamed" from Gaye Adegbalola's "Gaye Without Shame"; "Protest Song" and "Little Boy Blue" from Eric Himan's "Resonate"; "For Someone" and "Wide Awake" from Jake Walden's "Alive and Screaming"; the title cut and "Happy" from Catie Curtis' "Sweet Life"; "Like A Girl" and "Free" from Scott Free's "The Pink Album (A Pop Opera)"; "He Is" and the title cut from Sam Harris' "Free"; and "Get It Through Your Head" and "Meet Me at the Party" from Lori Michaels' "Living My Life Out Loud". PRIDE ON SCREEN 2008 Our award-winning entertainment reporter STEVE PRIDE reviews his favorite LGBT moving images of the year ? on screens both big and small, and with a cornucopia of clips and comments by their creators - in this special 30-minute show. Steve first looks at U.S. television (includes clips from network TV's "Brothers and Sisters," "As The World Turns," "Dirty Sexy Money," Showtime cable's "The Tudors," BBC America's "Skins," Logo cable's "Sordid Lives"; reality shows "Make Me A Supermodel," "Project Runway," "America's Next Top Model," "Transamerican Love Story"; and online, HereTV's "Paradise Falls," "3 Way" (3waytv.tv), and the franchise's first clearly gay couple on the independently produced "Star Trek: Phase II" (startreknewvoyages.com); Steve then reviews his picks for the Top Ten LGBT films released in 2008: "The World Unseen," "Breakfast with Scot," "Antarctica," "A Jihad for Love," "Ciao," "Were the World Mine," "Save Me," "Shelter," "Chris & Don," and "Milk". [or choose the 2009 versions of the Audiofile Year in Review and Pride on Screen] STRANGER THAN STRAIGHT The legendary American DJ known as "Dr. Demento" raised audio kitsch to an artform. As "Nurse Pimento", the late Southern California gay activist and radio producer David Fradkin added his own kind of spice to pursuing the peculiarities of popular culture in this early 1980s half-hour production, which features some offbeat queer words and music from Carroll "Archie Bunker" O'Connor, Groucho Marx, Perry Como, Laurel and Hardy, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks, Tommy Smothers, Martin Mull, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Noel Coward, the poignant self-aware words of Holocaust teen diarist Anne Frank, Bessie Smith singing, and her niece Ruby telling interviewer Chris Albertson about, their especially entertaining visit to a "Buffet Flat" -- and more! Chose one of these hour-long programs for each donation of $50; choose two for $100, etc: THE NATIONAL MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR LESBIAN & GAY RIGHTS RADIO DOCUMENTARY This "audio scrapbook" of the first-ever national LGBT march and rally in the U.S. capital on October 14, 1979, produced by "This Way Out" Associate Producer Lucia Chappelle and Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon, illuminates the problems and the passion of the first demonstration of its kind. As rich with the music and culture of the period as it is with the politics, the hour traces the event from the initial planning conference and some activists' heartfelt and sometimes humorous cross-country trip to D.C. on a "Freedom Train" to the big day itself, and its coverage (or lack thereof) in the conventional media. DIMINISHED CAPACITY Alive with the sounds from the streets, this documentary, produced by "This Way Out" Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon, captures the enormous impact on the queer community of the November 1978 assassinations of openly gay San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk and gay-friendly Mayor George Moscone. The "diminished capacity" defense (since eliminated legislatively) made it possible for former Supervisor Dan White to receive a very lenient sentence for the dual murders, a decision that sent shockwaves through the Castro District and led to what became known as the "White Night Riots." This fast-paced hour tracks the entire story through and including White's eventual suicide, with comments by many leading lesbian and gay activists and journalists of the time, and riveting thematic music by the Tom Robinson Band. THE BIGGEST QUEER NEWS STORIES OF 2003 A keepsake collection of more than an hour of "This Way Out" reports during a pivotal year for LGBT progress, with the voices of many of the activists involved, covering the advent of legal same gender marriage in Canada, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning state sodomy laws, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision opening legal marriage to queer couples, and a P-FLAG mom's "on scene" account of and sound from the historic consecration of openly gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson. SPECIAL PACKAGE: Get all of these CDs for a donation of at least $200. We?ll acknowledge donations of $250 or more on the air upon request. The word is spreading about the very powerful new film Precious directed by Lee Daniels.? Our very own Dan Manjovi has a song, "Somethin's Comin' My Way" sung by Grace Hightower and stands among legendary performers Mary J. Blige, Lenny Kravitz, LaBelle, Mahalia Jackson to name a few... ? Please see the official press release...CONGRATS to Dan for livin' the dream, making it happen and doing it all the while with style and class! ? DAN MANJOVI SONG FEATURED ON SOUNDTRACK FOR AWARD-WINNING FILM PRECIOUS ? FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (New York, NY ? November 9, 2009) Singer/songwriter Dan Manjovi?s song ?Somethin?s Comin? My Way? is featured on the soundtrack for the bold new Lionsgate film Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire which has dominated the movie industry with Oscar buzz for months.? ?Somethin?s Comin? My Way? is also used in the film.? ? Manjovi wrote ?Somethin?s Comin? My Way? at the request of the film?s director, Lee Daniels, whose previous films include Monster?s Ball (producer), Shadowboxer and The Woodsman. Manjovi explains ?Grace Hightower set up a meeting with Lee. He spoke to me about the film, and his ideas for how music would be used. After reading the screenplay, I thought about how Precious Jones admires these strong iconic African-American women such as Harriet Tubman, and the first line ? ?on my mind Tina Turner? came into my head. After that, I knew I had the song.? ?Somethin?s Comin? My Way? was included in its demo form for the film?s premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. After Precious took the festival?s Grand Jury Prize and was optioned by Lionsgate with Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry as co-executive producers, ?Somethin?s Comin My Way? was re-recorded for both the film and the soundtrack. The current version was also arranged and produced by Manjovi, and the featured vocal performance is by Grace Hightower, who also has a role in Precious as a social worker. ? Matriarch/Geffen Records in association with Lee Daniels Entertainment, Smokewood Entertainment, Lionsgate, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry will release the soundtrack to the prize-winning drama Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire. The soundtrack is executive produced by Lee Daniels and Mary J. Blige and is currently available online now and in stores on November 23, 2009.? The film opened in limited markets on November 6, 2009. ? Other artists on the soundtrack include Mary J. Blige, Labelle, Queen Latifah, MFSB, Mahalia Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Jean Carn, Donna Allen, Sunny Gale, Mario Grigorov and Nona Hendryx. ? Manjovi is a highly visible New York based singer songwriter, with two independently released CDs (Dan Manjovi, 2005; and Woke Up This Morning, 2008). Manjovi was a featured artist at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival's ASCAP Music Lounge where he appeared along with John Mayer, Nellie McKay, and Elvis Costello at The Canal Room.? He appears at New York's top music venues including The Bitter End, and The Cutting Room.? He also performs annually at Byrant Park?s Piano In The Park concert series.? His anthemic song ?Things?ll Get Better? is currently included in the United For The Ride, Volume I CD. ? David Byrne of The Windy City Times cheers, ?Manjovi has a knack for penning pop pleasures, coming across as a hybrid of Elton John, Dave Matthews and Kenny Loggins.? Joe Siegel from Edge publications states that Manjovi?s music is ?designed to sooth the spirit and make you think more closely about the world we live in. Manjovi has scored a major success on both counts.? ? Manjovi is currently finishing the score for a new musical comedy ?I Am, I Will, I Do? for which he has written the book, music and lyrics. ? www.DanManjovi.com Dan Manjovi Music, LLC ? In a supportive and fun environment, participants explore inventing and singing simple riffs, skat singing, and other singing forms which scaffold into rich and surprising harmonies, polyrhythms and songs that 'morph' from one style into another. The workshop has been described by participants as "Brilliant!" "Instant Community Choir." and even "Life-Changing Stuff!" No particular musical skills are necessary, just a willingness to be playful with your voice. The VORTEX is not for children, but musically inclined teens are welcome. Teachers, Martin Swinger and Deb Hensley are co-founders of a 5 person ensemble called ImproVox (www.Improvox.com ) who have been performing and leading VORTEX vocal improvisation workshops for 5 years for people of all skill levels. Many of the exercises have been learned directly from private, intensive studies with Rhiannon, one of Bobby McFerrin's longtime Voicestra members. I love, love being able to share as many songs by GLBT artists as I can, and would especially love to hear from, and get emails of mp3s, of your NEW xmas/holiday songs. They do not have to have openly gay lyrics, but you all know those are closest to my holiday heart...:) And by "new" I mean those not sent to me in the past; they don't have to be written by you. Due to show deadlines, I'd kind of need them in the next couple of weeks. Please send them along, thanks in advance, and I'd love it if you check out my OutRadio.com site for a list of other GLBT music radio shows, and send them to those programmers as well. SWEAT is a follow up to the critically received Stirred Not Shaken, which was nominated for Outstanding Male Debut Recording by Outmusic in 2005 and stayed on the Outvoice Top 40 charts for more than a year, peaking at #2. In a departure from the mellower Stirred Not Shaken, SWEAT is an up-tempo pop rock record with plenty of hooks to draw the listener in. Although his musical influences are numerous, one CD in particular influenced his writing for this project. Rickard says, "Natasha Bedingfield's Unwritten was a fun, energetic CD, but it still had something to say." To craft the pop rock sounds of SWEAT, Rickard enlisted Ohio-based producer, Mike Ofca, known for his work with a diverse roster of artists including Eric Himan, Righteous B, and Tom Goss. The songs on SWEAT have an immediate, "in the moment" feel, both in the music and the lyrics, and its central theme can be summed up by the line, "So I'll tell you how it is in case you haven't heard / Life is just a noun but living is a verb" - taken from the song "Anything of Nothing". Rickard says, "The last few years have been about learning to live life to the fullest, to get the most out of each moment, to keep my relationship with my partner fresh and exciting, and to balance the demands of daily life with some fun. To do all of that, it takes effort - and sweat. I think those are things anyone can relate to." The physical CD is available at CD Baby, with digital distribution through iTunes and other download outlets. A music video and dance remix will be released for the title track, and first single, "Sweat." In addition, a series of spring/summer 2010 concert dates are being planned. Mike Rickard is an Atlanta-based singer and songwriter on the web at www.mikerickard.com. Program note: There's no "NewsWrap" on this week's "This Way Out" - but that regular segment returns next week. - Despite two near-death heart attacks, WAYSON CHOY's life is far from over ? at least "NOT YET," the title of his new memoir. "This Way Out's" Brisbane correspondent JOHN FRAME sat down for a reflective conversation with the now 70-year-old gay Asian Canadian "in-betweener" about his roots, extended families, and love (Part 1, ending with a tease from next week's concluding Part 2). - A new book by MARY CAPPELLO, "CALLED BACK: MY REPLY TO CANCER, MY RETURN TO LIFE", uses "magical writing," says "This Way Out" queer lit commentator JANET MASON, to examine a reality that is neither pretty nor pink. - "DARE", a short that put a twist on high school romance and drew raves on the gay festival circuit in 2005, has grown into a new feature-length film in 2009.
