Or that the future of "The Advocate" could ever even be called into question? Make no mistake -- the existence of "This Way Out" is no less fragile. There are many reasons why some of the oldest and most reliable LGBT media institutions are being shaken to the core. People like you who rely on those publications have little power over whether or not they survive. But as a supporter of "This Way Out", your contribution today can make all the difference! We've been waiting to hear from you since our recent pre-holiday letter. With only a few weeks to go before 2009 draws to a close, we still don't have sufficient cash to carry us through until a grant we anticipate receiving next March. We need to raise $3,000 immediately in order to stay on the air! Can you be one of a hundred people to chip in a minimum of $30? Can you afford $100 ... or $200 ... or $1,000??? You have the power in your hands right now. A donation of any size -- even if it seems inconsequential to you -- will have a tremendous impact on the future of "This Way Out". Please use one of the PayPal buttons at our Web site (http://www.thiswayout.org), or mail your check or money order to PO Box 38327, Los Angeles, CA 90038-0327, USA. We'd be more than happy to send you one or more of the special thank you CDs described on our Web site at your request. THIS JUST IN: Thanks to BenBella Books, the first FIVE donors of $200 or more will receive a copy of "Queers in History: The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Historical Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Transgenders" in addition to any three of our thank you CDs. Our own queer life and lit commentator Janet Mason calls the new book "an LGBT kaleidoscope" with "the thrill of good dish!" Don't delay!!! We're counting on being included in your holiday gift list ... and putting you on ours! Happy Holidays, everyone! - In "NewsWrap": Austria's parliament approves a civil unions bill giving limited marriage-like rights to same-gender couples, while a marriage equality bill stalls in the U.S. state of New Jersey... the death penalty and life imprisonment for consensual adult same-gender sex have reportedly been removed from the proposed still horrifically harsh "Anti-Homosexuality Act" in Uganda... the Vatican issues a surprisingly strong condemnation of violence and discrimination against "homosexual persons" during a U.N. General Assembly meeting on anti-LGBT bias, while the Los Angeles diocese of the Episcopal Church selects the Rev. Mary Glasspool to become the denomination's second openly queer bishop... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by LEIGH MOORE and MICHELE PLEASANT). - A comprehensive chronicle of LGBT people around the world ? from ancient times to the present day ? has just come out. "This Way Out" commentator JANET MASON reveals some of the juicy details found in the pages of "QUEERS IN HISTORY: THE COMPREHENSIVE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HISTORICAL GAYS, LESBIANS, BISEXUALS, AND TRANSGENDERS" (from BenBella Books). - American lesbigay military personnel serving overseas during the holidays are remembered for the "CLANDESTINE COMMUNICATIONS" required of them in this "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR and BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by MARY CLAIRE WHITAKER). - The U.S. government wants to hear from gay and lesbian couples in 2010... but don't worry, we're assured that it's not a "Big Brother" conspiracy. Photo by JASON FIENHOLD-HAASIS Read it online: _http://whitechocolatemess.blogspot.com/2009/12/theater-lullaby-for-ryan.htm l_ (http://whitechocolatemess.blogspot.com/2009/12/theater-lullaby-for-ryan.html) San Antonio's own Jade Esteban Estrada has staged his one-man show that spans over twenty years of the history of AIDS in America. A daunting task, one might think, especially in a rather short production. I defer to Shakespeare, who wrote "Brevity is the soul of wit". Each of Estrada's historical archetypes are so beautifully played, turns tragic, comic and hopeful. Mess hopes that y'all will catch this show next time it plays locally, as Estrada has been touring the nation with it and his other on-going projects. Not only is it powerful in the theatrical sense, it also has a profound educational component - and that component is weaved seamlessly into the show. There's no hard hitting "message," and let me quote Samuel Goldwyn on "messages" in entertainment - "Messages are for Western Union". Estrada truly shines. Ryan would be proud. _http://www.getjaded.com/ _ (http://www.getjaded.com/) From rwaite at twcny.rr.com Thu Dec 17 06:00:39 2009 From: rwaite at twcny.rr.com (Ronald Waite) Date: Thu, 17 Dec 2009 07:00:39 -0500 Subject: [OutVoice] warm wishes Message-ID: <746BD3056BFD47D58142F8B32913AFCD@S0031675456> December 17, 2009 Happy Birthday to Angela Motter More Birthdays at www.famousbirthdays.com Other LGBT: Happy Birthday to Gregg Araki (12/17/1959) and Happy Birthday to Sarah Paulson (12/17/1974) "The first hundred years are the hardest." ~ Wilson Mizner E-cards are sent through BlueMountain.com.
