Aussie Olympian Matthew Mitcham thanks his man and his mum (hear him)... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM and GREG GORDON). * The marathon presidential campaign in the U.S. will head for its final sprint as the Republican Party begins its nominating convention in St. Paul, Minnesota this week.? It's been a long race full of ups and downs for presumptive GOP nominee SENATOR JOHN McCAIN.? When it comes to support for LGBT-related issues, we've seen mostly downs.? McCain found himself "down one" back in April of 2007, as This Way Out's LUCIA CHAPPELLE reported [a recreation of McCain discussing HIV-preventing condom distribution with a reporter on his "Straight Talk Express" bus tour]... he scored poorly again when put to the "queer marriage test" by ELLEN DEGENERES on her daytime TV talk show in May of this year [audio from that exchange]... and McCain gave LGBT activists something else to worry about with his position on adoptions by lesbigays during a mid-July "New York Times" interview [hear his comments]. * Lesbian feminist humorist KATE CLINTON helped a Washington-area audience work out their political frustrations with the Bush administration last November, while looking forward to the November to come [from her latest comedy CD "Climate Change" [www.kate-clinton-dot-com]. * And finally this week, Democratic presidential nominee SENATOR BARACK OBAMA was queer-inclusive during his much-heralded August 28th acceptance speech in Denver, Colorado [hear a stirring excerpt][www.LGBTforObama.com]. ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Parker ups the ante for all producers of computer-based, digitally recorded popular music. He creates modern, original, extremely well-produced radio-friendly songs whilst rarely resorting to the obvious. Painkiller will be of special interest to gay fans of rock - as it offers daring, difficult and different takes on a variety of gay cultural/lifestyle issues. I urge all radio hosts within reach of this review to air some Zerocrop Painkiller pop - asap!. I am part of the collective that is planning Fabulosa Fest 2008, a large queer women-centered music and film festival and craft fair in Guerneville, CA, October 10-12, 2008 (calendar-appropriate listings are at end of this email). Fabulosa Fest is a fund-raiser. We are donating all proceeds to community organizations like CUAV (Communities United Against Violence), BAAITS (Bay Area American Indian Two Spirits), the Guerneville Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (earmarked for HIV and Senior-related causes) and the Guerneville school system. And I am proud to say our line-up of entertainment is one of the most diverse and refreshing of any women's festival, ever! We are reaching out to you for help to spread the word about this weekend-long event. Since we are new, we are very dependent on community and commercial organizations and local media to open the channel for us to reach people with our vision. We are also seeking media sponsorship for this event - anyone who would be willing to donate banner ads on a website or print ads. Below this message I am including both the official press release about Fabulosa Fest 2008 and calendar-style listings. Any inclusion in your publication or website would be appreciated so much. Thank you so much for your time! Message-ID: <8CAE6EFAED35DD8-1744-1492@webmail-de05.sysops.aol.com> I need you. Right NOW. Last night I played at a benefit raising money for 4 (really 7) young lesbian women who have been convicted of a hate crime in New York City. Lesbians convicted of a hate crime?? One of them was sentenced to 11 years.? Who is it they hate?? Straight men.? That's what the judge and jury said. Here's the story... Seven young women (18-24 years old) came to NYC from Newark to hang out one August night.? Everyone knows NY is where you go to if you want to be out and be safe. The Village is a gay area. You can be yourself. Or so they thought. While walking down 6th Ave near the IFC theatre, a man says to one of them "Can I get some of that?"? She's drinking a soda and she figures he's homeless and hands it to him.? He says, "I don't want that.? I some of that!" pointing to her crotch. Now I don't know all the words that followed, but picture yourself in that situation.? What would you do? The young woman responded with "I'm gay."? And then he continued... "I don't care.? I fuck all y'all.? I'll fuck you straight.? What you need is some good dick..." What woman that has walked down a street in NY does not know this experience on some level? Arguing continued and then he threw his lit cigarette at one of them and spit on another.? That's when it became a physical fight. At some point in the fighting he got one of the girls in a chokehold and they could not get him off her.? Patrice, who is 4'11" and less than 100lbs, had stayed out of it for the most part. But at the that point she was watching him close to killing her friend.? She had a dollar store steak knife in her purse and took it out.? She was never sure that she hit him.? There was no blood on her knife (and the knife was never tested for his blood). Two guys stepped in and started fighting with the man.? The girls were able to get out of it completely and left with the two men still fighting him.? They went to McDonalds.? They cleaned themselves up, got something to eat... then 30 minutes later headed out only to be arrested.? Their attacker had been sent to the hospital - he was stabbed in the stomach. The media framed the girls as a "wolfpack of lesbians" "seething sapphic septet" a "gang"... When is a group of girls hanging out a gang?? When the girls a black lesbians. I'm writing this letter, because I feel like I have failed these young women. I don't have a lot of money, but I do something donation wise.? And I have done that.? But my greatest resource is my community.? I fear that we've been placated by our visibility and mainstream half-assed acceptence... our isolation made us need each other.? There was a time when you could read desparately through LC and know there is another somebody like you - a lesbian within miles.? Now we instant message each other and sometimes rarely make that extra effort to see and support each other in person.? Something about that has got to change. But for now, the immediate need from you today is money.? It can be $5, $10, whatever you can do.? One of the women who was convicted, Terrain, appealed and her sentence was reversed.? She is free and clear with no felony on her record, though she did serve two years for nothing while this man has walked the streets.? 3 women took pleas and have 5 years probation plus felony records (nice way to start your adult life). Renata is out on bail and her appeal is scheduled for November, I believe.? Patrice has an appeal in November. She is not elligible for bail.? Venice also has an appeal coming up and is elligible for bail.? Her bail is $5000. $5000 is a lot of money.? But it's not a lot of money. I must personally know 1000 lesbians with $5. I'm certain that someone I know could even drop the entire amount without it even phasing them...hard as the times are... I believe that it is possible to come up with the money to get Venice out today.? TODAY!? I mean it.? WWAD?? What would Audre do?? WWPPD? What would Pat Parker do?? Ask yourself... The first failure was in letting them get convicted in the first place.? Please join me in showing up for these women now. http://nedrajohnson.com/webpay.html Put in the "service rendered" line " Free the NJ4" and all monies (less PayPal fees will go to help these young women) For more information on this case... please go to http://www.amyewinter.net/nj4/? or google "nj4" or Dwayne Buckle... Photo by JOSEPH R. SARPARITO Read it online: _http://www.qonstage.com/QOnStage_articles/2008IconsII/art_tpl_w-196.html_ (http://www.qonstage.com/QOnStage_articles/2008IconsII/art_tpl_w-196.html) FIRE ISLAND - Jade Esteban Estrada, who limned memorable portraits of Sappho, Michelangelo, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, Sylvia Rivera and Ellen DeGeneres in his solo musical comedy "ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 1" (2002), given here last August, returned to the Community House, under the auspices of the Arts Project of Cherry Grove, on September 20, to dazzle us with "ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 2" (2004), saluting another half-dozen of our ancestors and contemporaries "for their courage and contribution to the advancement of mankind." Sherri Rase took responsibility for sound and lights. Jade began this second gallery of "ICONS" with Alexander the Great, singing mournfully of the loss of his "very special friend" Hephaestion, keening for his deceased love, and lamenting, "I can't conquer the world without you." After a period of seclusion, his Alexander allows himself to be cajoled back into action, facing the enemy, Persia, in a rocking number, in response to the people's call of "you'll rule Macedonia, you'll be great." He muses, "I want to leave my mark upon the world: greatness takes time" and, pointedly, "I want to be president or dictator or Sarah Palin," as he morphs into a frisky, nervously giggling Queen Christina of Sweden, donning the crown and taking up the scepter on her 18th birthday and echoing Alexander with, "I want to make history now." Thirty war-torn years pass and toughen Christina in the course of Jade's mini-rock opera about the monarch, who sings, "Sweden, oh my Sweden ... unearth me now." As peace prevails, she abdicates in favor of her cousin, Charles Gustav; decamps for Rome, leaving behind her beloved, Elba; and, now Catholic, incurs the Pope's wrath as she confronts him about his practice of genocide against the Jews. Saluted next is Susan B. Anthony, in modest shades of gray and blue-gray, declaring, in a gospel-style anthem, "the next step is the right to vote." "What we need is a revolution," she sings, noting, in her earnest ballad, that, "The politics of inclusion/don't allow female intrusion." With determination, she casts her vote in Rochester in the presidential election of 1872 and is promptly arrested and fined. Women's right to vote would come in 1920. Our hero changes before our eyes into "outstanding athlete of the world" Billie Jean King, racket in hand, giving herself a pep talk: "Focus. I know I can beat this man," Bobby Riggs; vigorously fighting "the battle of the sexes" on the tennis court and overcoming the popular myth that "women can't volley at the net;" and letting loose with an exuberant victory shout on winning. King mentions the places that she loves, including San Francisco, and that is the cue for a visit with a dapper fellow, soliciting votes for City Supervisor and, with some fancy hoofing, promoting himself with "I'm Harvey Milk, I'm a hell of a guy." Finally winning, after several unsuccessful attempts, Milk embraces his responsibilities as "The Mayor of Castro Street" and recognizes that "We just made history now." In less than a year's time, assassin Dan White's bullets ring out. The final icon Jade presents here is Mark Bingham, a jock, lauding, in a gently jubilant number, his dear mother, his "superstar;" his love, Matt; and the "beautiful American day"-that fateful day, September 11, 2001-when he boarded flight 93, the scene-and the musical-ending with, "Our plane's being hijacked. We've got to fight back!" We look forward to seeing ?ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 3,? which Jade introduced in 2006. I'm writing because we have a special Rubberlegs showcase coming up in New York City, and we don't do these shows very often. This will only be the third time Rubberlegs plays in the city this year. The last time, at Fontanas in Chinatown on June 21st, we had an amazing show, one of our best ever, and the place was packed. We want to give everyone who missed it a chance to see us at our best, in a new venue, with new songs and a special surprise, and that's why I'm announcing this show two weeks in advance. I'm even printing up special alt.tronic tickets for the occasion! The show will be at Sullivan Hall (formerly the Lion's Den) in Greenwich Village, on Tuesday, October 7th at 8:00 pm. You can buy tickets from me, or on TicketWeb. And here's the special surprise: we're putting together a new '80s cover band, to be called Nwavo Huevo. It's me and Ant, plus our good friend Joe Bace on guitar/bass and vocals. I was in Joe and Anthony's band when I first moved to New York, and we're super excited to be playing together again. As it turns out, Joe will be up here for three days of Nwavo Huevo rehearsals that weekend, and we've invited him to join us onstage for the second half of our set Tuesday night. So come party with us after work, and prepare to rock and be rocked! Last, but not least, it's September, and that means camping! Anthony and I are playing Spaghettifest this Saturday: three days of indie music in the woods, with our good friends Midnight Spaghetti hosting. Last year was fantastic! We made a bunch of new friends and fans, and we're really looking forward to seeing them again. So, I know it's a long drive, but if you're going to be anywhere near D.C. this weekend, Mount Solon VA is 150 miles southwest. I could put you on the guest list for a Saturday day trip, and you wouldn't have to pay the $40 ticket price. If that sounds irresistible, let me know. INSTEAD OF ?YEP?: GAY PRIDE IN CELEB-SPEAK By CHRIS LEE September 24, 2008 Read it online: _http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/soundboard/2008/09/yep-or-yes-gay.html_ (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/soundboard/2008/09/yep-or-yes-gay.html) When ?American Idol? * runner-up Clay Aiken decided to come out of the closet this week, announcing his homosexuality in the latest issue of People magazine, celebrity watchers and etymologists alike sat up and took notice -? but for vastly different reasons. Dogged by rumors since entering the public consciousness in 2003, Aiken confirmed widely held suspicions regarding his sexual orientation in an interview with the magazine. Its cover features a photo of the fleet-voiced, elf-like singer hugging his newborn son accompanied by the headline: ?Yes, I?m gay.? Crystallizing the general reaction from the celebrity press, a blog post yesterday from the self-declared ?Queen of all media? Perez Hilton blares ? Finally!!!!!? But for word lovers, close readers and celebrity obsessives, the ?Yes, I?m gay? headline exists as a subtle tweak on the way mainstream media has historically handled celebrity self-outing. In 1997, comedian Ellen DeGeneres similarly came out by appearing on the cover of Time magazine. Her headline: ?Yep, I?m gay.? The magazine was presumably quoting DeGeneres, then a sitcom star. Nonetheless, such a subtle gradation of language sounds downright folksy contrasted against Aiken?s highly starched ?Yes, I?m gay.? (That year ?Yep, I?m gay? began to appear on keychains and was memorialized in a song by Jade Esteban Estrada.) The headline accompanying sitcom star Neil Patrick Harris? self-outing article in People in 2006 was comparatively verbose: ?I am a very content gay man.? But for former N?Sync member Lance Bass, who revealed his sexual orientation on the cover of People in 2006, less is apparently more. Unlike Aiken, Harris and DeGeneres, his headline dispensed with any sort of qualifiers or subtle, conversational cues and cut directly to the chase, flatly declaring: ?I?m gay.? www.getjaded.com **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges?
