"THIS WAY OUT: the international lesbian & gay radio magazine
Program #1,073 distributed 10/20/08
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
MP Tim Barnett closes a chapter of New Zealand history;
"What Matters" for Matthew (and Randi Driscoll) is stopping the hate;
India's sex law battle gets a "Prime" directive, Australia's Senate okays separation equality, the UK's immigration head says homo-oppression is insufficient for asylum, a California appeals court upholds $300,000 in damages to bullied lesbigay students, and more global LGBT news

- In "NewsWrap": The long-running challenge to India's anti-lesbigay sex law continues in the Delhi High Court with judges chastising arguments against repeal by the government's Solicitor General and the P.M. publicly demanding that his Home and Health ministries resolve their conflicting positions on the issue... Australia's Senate passes a bill to give same-gender couples access to federal Family Courts when their relationships break up... the head of? Britain's Borders and Immigration Agency outrages human rights activists by saying that homophobic laws or culture in a home country are not, in themselves, reasons to grant asylum to an LGBT refugee... the controversial firing of the lesbian editor of a provincial newspaper prompts comments by Finland's president... a California appeals court upholds a $300,000 damages award to two lesbigay students whom a San Diego-area school district failed to protect from "severe and pervasive" abuse... young people hop on Equality Ride buses to advocate for more LGBT-welcoming environments at selected U.S. Christian colleges, but several are arrested in Florida and Alabama... and more LGBT news from around the world? (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by PAM MARSHALL and CHRIS WILSON).

- Openly gay NEW ZEALAND Member of Parliament TIM BARNETT retires at the end of the current session after a 12-year career marked by key fights for justice and equality.? As he prepared to make his farewell speech, Barnett and "This Way Out" Auckland correspondent ROSS STEVENSON reflected on how much has changed since the 1976 outing of politician and academic Marilyn Waring.

- It was not the first time a gay, lesbian, bi, or transperson had fallen victim to brutally-fatal homophobia, and it certainly was not the last.? As the 10th anniversary of the death of MATTHEW SHEPARD is being observed, the foundation that bears his name continues to work for an end to anti-LGBT hate violence. "This Way Out's" SHERI LUNN spoke with singer-songwriter RANDI DRISCOLL recently about her contributions to the cause (segues directly into Driscoll's benefit song "WHAT MATTERS") [www.RandiDriscoll.com, www.MatthewShepard.org].
