                              THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
                   Program #1,042, distributed 03/17/08
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
 The un-tortured tale of a Texas sissy in "Memoirs of A Beautiful Boy";
   Activists out an Oklahoma-phobe's hate speech, and Ellen responds;
Spanish elections reaffirm marriage equality, politics and prostitutes
bring down Italy's Prodi and New York's Spitzer, Norway proposes
marriage equality, Venezuela's high court says no and yes to queer
couples, Britain takes another look at a gay Iranian refugee, more news

* In "NewsWrap": Spain's marriage equality law is apparently safe with the
reelection of Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero... former
Italian P.M. Romano Prodi, who pushed for legal recognition of same-gender
couples before his fragile coalition government fell, says he's quitting politics,
while New York state Lieutenant Governor David Paterson, who succeeds
disgraced Governor Eliot Spitzer, is a longtime queer rights ally... Norway's
government introduces legislation opening legal marriage and joint child custody
rights to same-gender couples, but Venezuela's Supreme Tribunal of Justice rules
that marriage equality is not constitutionally mandated... gay Iranian teen
Mehdi Kazemi gets a deportation reprieve from the British Home Office, while an
Aussie "Baywatch" hunk comes out... and more GLBT news from around the world
(written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by BRIDGETTE STRONG & LEIGH
MOORE).

* It seems that OKLAHOMA STATE REPRESENTATIVE SALLY KERN thought a small
meeting with some of her Republican constituents was a safe place for a virulent
anti-gay diatribe, but – unfortunately for her – citizen journalism struck
again. Someone secretly recorded Kern's talk, and the GAY AND LESBIAN VICTORY
FUND posted it on YouTube. In no time well over 825,000 people had heard it.
Victory Fund President Chuck Wolfe wrote an open letter to the lawmaker
explaining that it was his organization's intention "to draw attention to the fact
that even elected leaders like you are saying some nasty and potentially
dangerous things about your fellow citizens." With that same rationale in mind,
we're providing Kern's unedited comments (with intro music from "Behind Closed
Doors" by CHARLIE RICH). Kern’s remarks have understandably caused a major
uproar. She’s received thousands of critical e-mail and voice-mail messages.
And one queer celebrity used a non-traditional means this week to register
her disapproval. ELLEN DEGENERES played some excerpts from Kern’s comments
on her multi-award-winning daytime TV talk show – and then, with a bit of
humor, tried to reach out to the state legislator.

* ROBERT LELEUX was an east Texas sissy boy when his father left, and his
Mother began a desperate regimen of makeovers, plastic surgeries, and hairpieces —
all calculated to secure a wealthy new husband. This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE
poured a big glass of iced tea and sat on the porch swing with Leleux – and
his Mamma – to talk about his hilarious new book from St. Martins Press, "THE
MEMOIRS OF A BEAUTIFUL BOY" (with Leleux reading excerpts, and intro/outro
music from "It Would Be So Great If You'd Just Die," music and lyrics by Leleux's
mother JESSICA WILSON, performed by NADIA ACKERMAN).
