THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
Program #1,041, distributed 03/10/08
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
Two-Spirit people *gather* media savvy;
A "Rainbow Minute" illuminates queer Native history;
Lesbigay Iranian and Malaysian asylum seekers suffer in Limbo, Jamaican
activists nix a tourist boycott, Ukrainian MPs decry "perversion
propaganda," California's top court hears its marriage equality case,
gay fans pucker over *how* "the world turns," and more global LGBT news
* In "NewsWrap": An Iranian lesbian refugee is fighting a British deportation
order, Dutch judges are deciding on the return to Britain of an Iranian gay
teen who fled to the Netherlands after being refused U.K. asylum, and a
Malaysian gay refugee may have already been deported by Canada... Jamaican queer
activists caution against a tourist boycott to prod their government into
better-protecting LGBT people, while activists in the Ukraine appeal for international
support in the face of new government attacks on their rights... Argentina's
new president reportedly supports marriage equality, while California's
Supreme Court hears arguments in a challenge to the state's ban on same-gender
marriage... fans protest the pullback of a fictional gay couple's kisses "As The
World Turns"... and more LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG
GORDON, and reported this week by DONNA ANN WARD and RICK WATTS).
* A brief history of "THE REVERED TWO-SPIRITED PEOPLE" is offered in a
"RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at the studios of WRIR-FM
in Richmond, Virginia and read by TALL FEATHERS).
* There's a growing movement for Pride and support among Native peoples.
One of its tural activist RICHARD LA FORTUNE, an Alaskan citizen of the Yupik,
or Eskimo, tribe. He heads up the TWO-SPIRIT PRESS ROOM and is helping to
organize the 20th anniversary INTERNATIONAL TWO-SPIRIT GATHERING, scheduled for
August in Minneapolis, Minnesota. La Fortune chats with correspondent DIXIE
TREICHEL ["Fresh Fruit" on KFAI-FM/Minneapolis-St. Paul] about his varied work
with those all-too-often overlooked communities (with intro/outro music from
"Walk That Talk" by transgender two-spirit musician GEORGIE JESSUP, from her CD
"Woman In A Man's Suit").
