                              THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
                   Program #1,056, distributed 06/23/08
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
       The "Great California Wedding Rush of 2008" blooms in June;
Conservative Christian crusaders condemn New York's "from elsewhere"

marriage recognition, a Green MP grows a marriage proposal for
Tasmania, Lithuania's legislature further liberates gays and lesbians,
Ukraine LGBT groups share a common umbrella, South Asian advocacy
organizations network for progress, and more global LGBT news

*In "NewsWrap": The number of California marriage licenses issued during a
typical week in June more than doubles during the first few days that
same-gender couples can legally do so... hundreds of conservative Christian ministers
rally in Albany to protest Governor David Paterson's directive ordering New York
state agencies to recognize legal same-gender marriages conducted elsewhere –
including California, where there's no residency requirement... Tasmanian
minority Green Party MP Nick McKim plans to introduce marriage equality
legislation when parliament reconvenes on July 1st in the Australian state... the U.S.
Department of Justice orders the Social Security Administration to grant
benefits to the eligible children of same-gender couples... Lithuania's parliament
passes a new sexual orientation-inclusive Law on Equal Treatment banning bias
in the provision of goods and services, three leading LGBT rights groups in
the Ukraine form an umbrella organization to improve advocacy efforts, while
representatives from groups in Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal,
Pakistan and Sri Lanka create a network to jointly address LGBT issues that arise in
their individual countries... and more LGBT news from around the world
(written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by LEIGH MOORE and ERICA SPRINGER).

* Forty-one years later, a new "Summer of Love" began in CALIFORNIA for
thousands of lesbian and gay couples who got marriage licenses this week. We have
on-scene coverage from both Northern and Southern California by KPFA/Berkeley
Evening News anchor MARK MERICLE and reporters WENDELL HARPER, CHRISTOPHER
MARTINEZ, and ROSE KETABCHI, KPFK/Los Angeles Evening News reporter SYLVESTER
RIVERS, and "This Way Out" Associate Producer LUCIA CHAPPELLE (includes
comments by newly-married pioneering lesbian couple PHYLLIS LYON and DEL MARTIN, San
Francisco Mayor GAVIN NEWSOM, longtime activist ROBIN TYLER and her partner
DIANE OLSON, several other happy couples, attorney GLORIA ALLRED, Los Angeles
City Council President ERIC GARCETTI, and Santa Clara County Supervisor KEN
YEAGER, with outro music from "Married" by openly-gay performer ALAN
CUMMING-thanks, JD!).
