THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
Program #1,037, distributed 02/11/08
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
Venerable civil rights leader Julian Bond defines civil rights;
A literary collection captures Colorado's contradictions;
Honoring Latino leader/queer ally Cesar Chavez in a "Rainbow Minute";
A gossip rag's "wedding" pix prompt mass arrests in Senegal,
Australia's new government's not sold on civil unions, a New York court
orders same-gender Canadian marriage recognition, and more global news
* In "NewsWrap": Reports of mass arrests for homosexuality in Senegal alarm
international human rights groups, while police raid a gay Web site-promoted
birthday party in India... the new federal government of Aussie PM Kevin Rudd
balks at ACT civil unions that include public ceremonies... violence mars the
installation of a new Anglican leader in Harare, Zimbabwe after the former
bishop is ousted for rejecting his synod's so-called "support" for homosexuality
and attempting to establish a dissident congregation in the Church's
cathedral... a New York appeals court rules that a lesbian couple's marriage in Canada
must be recognized by the state... and more LGBT news from around the world
(written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by LEIGH MOORE and BRIDGETTE
STRONG).
* "This Way Out" literary commentator JANET MASON had developed a rapport
with the Centennial State before it became a homophobic hotbed – and before she
discovered that the voices of its LGBT heroes had been published by Johnson
Books in "FOCUS ON THE FABULOUS".
* Queer-supportive "CESAR CHAVEZ - LATINO CHAMPION OF CIVIL RIGHTS" is
celebrated in a "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM
in Richmond, Virginia and read by BILL LUPOLETTI).
* While still a Morehouse College student in 1960, JULIAN BOND helped start
the Atlanta sit-ins and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He was
nominated for Vice President at the 1968 Democratic National Convention,
although he was legally too young to accept. Now the Chairman of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People, his voice is well known from
documentaries like "Eyes on the Prize." Bond brought those familiar dulcet
tones to the 20th annual CREATING CHANGE CONFERENCE, convened by the National
Gay and Lesbian Task Force. The civil rights warrior kicked off this year's
activist gathering in Detroit, Michigan on February 7th with a speech noting
the commonalities between the LGBT civil rights movement and the struggle of
African Americans - hear some excerpts.
