So it's not surprising that this characteristically Asian country still has a number of serious penalties on the statue books that make life for ordinary LGBT people more challenging than it already is. An attempt last year to repeal these laws failed. Journalist CLAUDIA CRAGG, the author of a number of books on Asia, says that the days of Bugis Street, teaming with dazzling transgender darlings, are long gone. But, she reports, the government is beginning to realize that Singapore might have to do something to change its image, or lose tourist dollars to more welcoming countries in the region like Thailand and Hong Kong (with comments by ALEX AU, founder of the Singapore LGBT group People Like Us, and Dr. Gillian Koh, Senior Research Fellow at Singapore's Institute of Policy Studies). * On February 11th the U.S. queer LOGO cable channel debuts "TRANSAMERICAN LOVE STORY". This groundbreaking elimination dating show features transgender bachelorette CALPERNIA ADDAMS being wooed by eight dashing men. With the help of her trans best friend ANDREA JAMES and a parade of challenges and matchmaking dates, Calpernia whittles down her group of eligibles in hopes of finding her Prince Charming. And unlike a widely condemned "reality TV" predecessor, the suitors on this show know that she?s a male-to-female transsexual. This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE sits down with Calpernia and Andrea to get the 411 on the show, the perks of reality TV, and dating in Los Angeles [www.PrideOnScreen.com; www.logoonline.com; www.calpernia.com; www.andreajames.com; www.deepstealth.com]. ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). This is your chance to rub up against strangers and ?mosh," thereby creating a digestive roux with the falafel that you will doubtlessly eat first, mixed with the bits of fingernail that you have gnawed in anticipation of this show which includes selections from their upcoming extremely exciting sophomore CD. It?s on a Sunday night when there?s nothing on TV due to the writers? strike (solidarity!) and the boys in the band are free from their humdrum Lincoln Center and Broadway obligations and are free to give themselves fully to you." Is it a casual mention or what? I'd appreciate it if someone can describe this to me. On TransFM, Sunday February 17 Message-ID: <200739.34860.qm@web52906.mail.re2.yahoo.com> MEET OUR GUEST Louis Mitchell is an out FtM activist and is one of the coordinators for New England's first Transgender Pride March and Rally and was also profiled in Colorlines Racewire. (see article below). Becoming a Black Man By Daisy Hernandez, Colorlines Racewire. Posted February 11, 2008. Louis Mitchell expected a lot of change when he began taking injections of hormones eight years ago to transition from a female body to a male one. He anticipated that he'd grow a beard, which he eventually did and enjoys now. He knew his voice would deepen and that his relationship with his partner, family and friends would change in subtle and, he hoped, good ways, all of which happened. What he had not counted on was changing the way he drove. Within months of starting male hormones, "I got pulled over 300 percent more than I had in the previous 23 years of driving, almost immediately. It was astounding," says Mitchell, who is Black and transitioned while living in the San Francisco area and now resides in Springfield, Massachusetts. Targeted for "driving while Black" was not new to Mitchell, who is 46 years old. For example, a few years before transitioning, he had been questioned by a cop for simply sitting in his own car late at night. But "he didn't really sweat me too much once he came up to the car and divined that I was female," Mitchell recalls. Now in a Black male body, however, Mitchell has been pulled aside for small infractions. When he and his wife moved from California to the East Coast, Mitchell refused to let her drive on the cross-country trip. "She drives too fast," he says, chuckling and adding, "I didn't want to get pulled over. It took me a little bit longer [to drive cross country] 'cause I had to drive like a Black man. I can't be going 90 miles an hour down the highway. If I'm going 56, I need to be concerned." As more people of color transition, Mitchell's experience is becoming an increasingly common one. *(to read the rest of the article click on the title) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.wkjce.org -- Ethan Founder and creator TransFM Internet Broadcasting Network http://www.TransFM.org Board Chair National Transgender Advocacy Coalition http://www.NTAC.org Board Member International Foundation for Gender Education http://www.IFGE.org Hate Crime statistics Remembering Our Dead web project http://www.rememberingourdead.org Board Member Families United Against Hate http://www.FUAH.org -Joanne Lynn http://www.freewebtown.com/joanne_lynn/ --------------------------------- WKJCE TLGB RADIO http://www.wkjce.org/ http://www.myspace.com/wkjce --------------------------------- Northwest PA Trans Group http://www.freewebtown.com/northwestpatrans/ --------------------------------- " I reject your reality and substitute my own" - Adam Savage (MythBusters) --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Israel opens adoptions to same-gender couples, while a first-ever Palestinian LGBT group forms in Jerusalem... a lesbian couple in the Australian state of Queensland gets a marriage license, but another faces trespassing charges in the U.S. state of Colorado for trying to do the same... and other LGBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by JON BEAUPRE and RICK WATTS). * Queer Pride began as a revolutionary act and became a year-round, worldwide celebration. But as our commentator JANET MASON observes in "PRIDE IN THE VILLAGE," it's also a social process that takes many forms in the march toward liberation. * In the words of Minneapolis filmmaker ESTHER B. ROBINSON, "Every family history has its missing." For Robinson's family, the "missing" is her uncle DANNY WILLIAMS. He made more than 20 movies as part of Andy Warhol's Factory, designed light shows for the Velvet Underground, and became the pop culture icon's live-in lover. But in 1966 he took a drive to the beach from his family's Massachusetts home and was never seen again. Robinson's documentary "A WALK INTO THE SEA: DANNY WILLIAMS AND THE WARHOL FACTORY" explores her uncle?s career and his relationship with Warhol, and while her film doesn't solve the mystery of Williams' disappearance, it has won her a stack of awards. She talks about the experience with "This Way Out" correspondents DIXIE TREICHEL and JOHN TOWNSEND [from "Fresh Fruit" on KFAI-FM in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota]. ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). He wanted me to let you all know what is going on... he contracted a case of Necrotizing fasciitis. Here is the info from wikipedia or fasciitis necroticans, commonly known as "flesh-eating bacteria," is a rare infection of the deeper layers of skin and subcutaneous tissues, easily spreading across the fascial plane within the subcutaneous tissue. Many types of bacteria can cause necrotizing fasciitis (eg. Group A streptococcus, Vibrio vulnificus, Clostridium perfringens, Bacteroides fragilis), of which Group A streptococcus (also known as Streptococcus pyogenes) is the most common cause. For the whole article go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necrotising_fasciitis Needless to say... He will be out at least the rest of this week maybe next.... He is getting out of ICU and going to a regular room.... he will have at least one more surgery before they are through... but he is much better. Len is better. He had his second surgery. He has at least one more tomorrow. If there is no infection left he will not have to have anymore surgeries. It seems that it turned into MRSA. Hugs and thanks to all that have written and called. One thing though... someone sent Len some flowers today... the florist didn't get the name of the person that sent them.... All we know it they came from NY. So if I or Len does not thank you its because we are not sure who sent them... Let me know and I will let Len know! Thanks from Len, Chris and myself! He blends his humor into a musical comedy show that educates as well as entertains. Tri-Citians got a taste of this funnyman's humor last year when he brought his ICONS world tour to town. This year, Estrada has put together a new blend of characters for his show that will be performed Saturday at the Rainbow Cathedral Metropolitan Community Church in Yakima. This time Estrada, 32, will bring the characters of Alexander the Great, Queen Christina of Sweden, Susan B. Anthony, Billie Jean King, Harvey Milk and 9/11 hero Mark Bingham into his act and tell you what they all have in common. ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 2 is a one-man act sure to slap the frown off your face. He's performed several times this past year in support of HIV/AIDS organizations across the country, he said this week via e-mail. "It's been very gratifying to be able to make people listen by means of music and comedy," Estrada said. "The history of this disease has shaped our culture and it makes me feel good that I am allowing people to see some of the human strength and triumph in this show." Besides his touring shows, Estrada has appeared in a few films recently, like Doldrums and The Innocent Killers, which he confessed, "I'm the evil gay guy in that film." Estrada has played to sold-out audiences all over the world. He figures his popularity comes from his ability to tell the truth about uncomfortable topics using humor. "You can tell the truth without using a soapbox," Estrada said. "I have 10 shows I alternate on the road, and I've certainly been busy since I visited your area last year. But I love what I do. I want my audiences to always have the feeling that they can reach out and touch me." _www.getjaded.com_ (http://www.getjaded.com/) **************Ideas to please picky eaters.
