Program #1,080 - distributed 12/8/08
(hosted by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
"Milk" makes history again – on the big screen;
Courageous campaigns mark World AIDS Day, the U.N. may consider a global anti-bias ban, a hundred laws extend new rights to Aussie couples, Burundi outlaws consensual gay sex, Amsterdam addresses escalating anti-gay attacks, a Florida court allows gay dads to adopt, a high "impact" cyber-network plans more equality actions, and more LGBT news

- In "NewsWrap": Observances of the 20th annual World AIDS Day include unprecedented participation by openly gay men at a march in Haiti, while African LGBT groups decry the lack of access by sexual minorities on the continent to HIV/AIDS education, prevention and treatment programs, and notoriously homophobic Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov defends his bans on LGBT Pride events as a way to curb the spread of the disease... some 50 member states sign on to a resolution coming before the United Nations General Assembly this month that decries discrimination against sexual minorities... Australian lawmakers pass legislation to give de facto same-gender couples many of the rights of marriage, while Burundi lawmakers overwhelming vote to specifically criminalize adult consensual gay sex, as Amsterdam authorities confront a drastic increase in homophobic hate crimes in the Dutch capital... ruling that the state law banning it is uncons
titutional, a Florida judge grants adoption of 2 young brothers they'd fostered since 2004 to a Miami gay man and his partner... jointheimpact.com has several other equality actions in the works  (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by MICHAEL LEBEAU and JOHN TORRES).

- In 1977, HARVEY MILK was elected to the SAN FRANCISCO Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man to be elected to major public office in America.  His victory was not just a victory for LGBT rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum.  From senior citizens to union workers, Harvey Milk changed the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights and became, before his untimely death in 1978, a hero for everyone around the world.  In the new film “MILK,” Academy Award winner Sean Penn stars in the title role under the direction of Academy Award nominee Gus Van Sant, filmed on location in San Francisco from an original screenplay by Dustin Lance Black.  This Way Out’s STEVE PRIDE has audio clips from the film, and comments by GUS VAN SANT, DUSTIN LANCE BLACK, and actors EMILE HIRSCH, DIEGO LUNA, and JAMES FRANCO about bringing Harvey’s story to the big screen.
