"THIS WAY OUT: the international lesbian & gay radio magazine

Program #1,065 distributed 08/25/08

(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)

Candidate Obama speaks to LGBT issues;

Musicians sing personal stories with a message in the "Audiofile";

Argentina puts couples rights on the national agenda, Brazil fails to
adopt parental equality, an indigenous tribe ignores Oregon's marriage
law, Mumbai activists demand India sodomy law repeal, Malawi lesbigays
take their first liberating step, and more global LGBT news

* In "NewsWrap": Argentina's first national-level LGBT rights action
allows same-gender couples to claim their deceased partners' pensions,
but legislation to grant adoption rights to lesbigay couples is
withdrawn in Brazil... California's Supreme Court unanimously rules
that LGBT people's right to equality in medical treatment trumps a
doctor's religious beliefs, while Oregon's Native American Coquille
tribe authorizes same-gender marriages even though the state
constitutionally bans them... India's Health Minister renews his call
for repeal of the country's Penal Code Section 377, which outlaws gay
sex, as hundreds in Mumbai demanding repeal add their voices to earlier
demonstrations in other cities... gays and lesbians also increase their
public profile in Malawi with the formation of Magrim, the southern
African nation's first LGBT rights advocacy group... the only openly
gay athlete at the Beijing Olympics, 20-year-old Australian Matthew
Mitcham, wins Gold in the Men’s 10-meter platform diving compe
tition
with a near-perfect final effort (written by GREG GORDON, and reported
this week by SHERI LUNN and LEIGH MOORE).

* BARACK OBAMA was still in the Illinois state legislature when his
star-making Keynote Speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention
catapulted him onto the national political stage (we begin this segment
with a brief excerpt).  Four years later, he's a U.S. Senator set to be
nominated for president when his party convenes again this week in
Denver, Colorado.  When the long campaign was just beginning a year
ago, Obama appeared in a nationally televised Democratic Presidential
Forum presented by the LGBT advocacy group Human Rights Campaign.  He
discussed his rights-related credentials with panelists JONATHAN
CAPEHART of the "Washington Post" and HRC Executive Director JOE
SOLMONESE.

* "THE MESSENGER" (excerpts from "Since Tina Moved In" and "Too Much in
a Hurry" by JAMES COLLINS) brings "TRUTH STAINED LIES" ("Believe What
You Will" and "Rise" by RON MORRIS) to "BREAK THE SPELL" ("How Would It
Be" and "Hurricane" by ELLIS) as 3 new albums get the spotlight in the
"AUDIOFILE" (with comments by each artist, hosted by CHRIS WILSON &
JD DOYLE and written and produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM).
