THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
Program #1,015, distributed 09/10/07
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
"Tales of the City's" Armistead Maupin clicks with an older "Mouse";
"Somewhere in Between" plays on gender politics;
A "Rainbow Minute" profiles Native American "princess" We'Wha;
Israel's A.G. reaffirms queer couples' financial rights, California
lawmakers again propose marriage equality to the "Governator," Father
Mychal's story is a big "Yes" for kids, and other global GLBT news
*In "NewsWrap": Israel's Attorney General reaffirms the inheritance and
property rights of same-gender couples, while a key adviser to the European Court
of Justice supports a German gay man's right to his deceased partner's
pension... the California legislature for the second time passes a marriage equality
bill on to Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who vetoed a similar bill
in 2005... six men are jailed in the latest crackdown on gay men in
Cameroon... the marriage of two Muslim women is annulled in Malaysia... a new
children's book, "He Said Yes," tells the story of openly gay Father Mychal Judge, the
first official victim of the 9/11 terrorist attacks... and more GLBT news from
around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by
CHRISTOPHER GAAL and RICK WATTS).
* Since its premiere at the opening ceremony of Tel-Aviv's 2003 Pride Month,
"SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN" has been performed across Israel and at a number of
European and American arts festivals. Written by former Israeli soldier and
transgender playwright Ronnie Almog, it addresses issues of gender and sexual
identity, religious belief, and the role of the individual in society. When the
Tel Aviv group Benlven brought the show to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, its
Twin Cities producer LOUISA HEXT joined DIXIE TREICHEL and JOHN TOWNSEND of
KFAI-FM's Fresh Fruit program for a conversation with director ISSY MAMANOV.
* "OH REVERED ONE WITH TWO SPIRITS" profiles Native American "princess"
WE'WHA in a "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in
Richmond, Virginia and read by TALL FEATHERS).
* Not "Mickey," not "Mighty," and not the one that roared... but have you
ever wondered what happened to that other beloved "Mouse"? This Way Out's JOSY
CATOGGIO chats with "Tales of the City" novelist ARMISTEAD MAUPIN about HIV
survivors, daddies, transfolk, and his new book "MICHAEL TOLLIVER LIVES" in this
first of a delightful 3-part conversation.
