We have excerpts from his two press conferences this week, and reflect on some of the issues this incident raises (written by GREG GORDON and reported by RICK WATTS and JON BEAUPRE, with intro/outro music from the 1994 gay musical comedy "THE BALLAD OF LITTLE MIKEY" ? thanks JD!). * This "RAINBOW MINUTE" profiles a U.S. expatriate who found freedom in Paris, quotes his comments about coming out, and asks "Who Said This?" (the answer: JAMES BALDIN) (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by DUSTIN RICHARDSON). * Independent Aussies (excerpts from "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and "Sydney2" from BLUEHOUSE's "ONE MORE KISS"), old-time country ("Pretty Girl" and "Fever Moon" from DIANA JONES' "MY REMEMBRANCE OF YOU"), and an alt-folk favorite ("Coming Home (The Eclipse)" and "Bright Colored Afternoons" from AMY COOK's "THE SKY OBSERVER'S GUIDE") grace this all lesbian edition of the "AUDIOFILE" (with comments by the artists, hosted by CHRIS WILSON & JD DOYLE and written and produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM). Message-ID: <000e01c7efcf$1e462250$6401a8c0@D8LLQDC1> Hi OutVoicers, On Monday I was able to get the July 2007 Chart posted at www.outvoice.net. Congrats to all the artists. There is a huge and close compete for the top spots. The top five positions are only separated by under 50 points. Voters and more complete ballots are on the rise! This means more are voting and more voting for more than one CD per ballot. Big thanks to the artists for keeping your fans alert and supporting a more complete ballot. Extra work here in the count, but the goal is after all recognition. Tonight at 8:00pm eastern time the show for the July chart will open at www.rainbowworldradio.com. The August 2007 chart will be posted on September 15, 2007. I want to take a minute to thank all who sent emails, cards, called etc during my "ritis camp" visit. Your words were encouraging and very helpful. Knowing you have friends and support during such a process makes the task so much easier to overcome. I will be catching up emails and projects for the next few days. If you have not gotten a personal response from me yet, please know it coming soon. Again, thanks for your warm support! Message-ID: <00ee01c7f332$f1f9e8f0$6600a8c0@AltDesk> If you've ever taken a drive down Virginia's Route 81, you know how breathtakingly beautiful the scenery is. This was where Dirty Dancing was filmed (though the story takes place in the Catskills). Rubberlegs has been invited to play a weekend music festival in Mount Solon, VA, produced by the guys in the fantastic all-out funk band, Midnight Spaghetti and the Chocolate G-Strings. We had a great time sharing the stage with them last February, in an Irish pub in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Please check out the festival's site at www.spaghettifest.com, and let me know if you're interested. I have discount tickets for the event, and will bring some to our Sept. 20th show at Fat Baby. Also, R.U.B., the awesome 4-man '80s new wave cover band, will be playing all afternoon this coming weekend at a block party on Long Beach Island, NJ. Students, $10.00 - General "Tortilla Heaven" is a solo play performed by Jade Esteban Estrada. ? Tortilla Heaven? is comedic yet very real story of first, second and third generations Mexicans trying to relate to one another. First generations living a humble life and making home feel more like home, second generations abandoning their roots in order to assimilate to the big city life and the third generations trying to understand it all without knowing the language of his people. When generations finally meet, speaking the same language seems to be the easy part of a difficult journey of understanding why your family is so different. Whether you love them or hate them, they are going to be there when you need help the most! * Q and A session with Jade Esteban Estrada after the performance. You truly have been a shining star for _GCAM_ (http://www.gcam.org/) and we love you for your guidance and faith in us and what we are trying to do in this world." Judy Reeves - Co-Chair GULF COAST ARCHIVE AND MUSEUM OF HOUSTON What is running time on the show? Running time on "Tortilla Heaven" is 65 minutes. The show is played with no intermission. Is there any Spanish spoken in the show? "Tortilla Heaven" contains dialogue in both English and Spanish. I don't understand Spanish. Would I still enjoy the show? Celeste Angela Estrada wrote "Tortilla Heaven" with both Spanish-speakers and non-Spanish speakers in mind. Everyone will understand the storyline by following the context, script and body language. The older characters in the play speak Spanish and Spanglish (or Tex-Mex) while the younger generations strictly speak English. Friday, September 14, 2007 By JEFF THEODORE Journal Arts Editor Read it online: http://www.nj.com/entertainment/jjournal/index.ssf?/base/entertainment-0/11897 49756182550.xml&coll=3#continue For Jade Esteban Estrada, who calls himself a performing artist (not performance), the obligation to leave a legacy behind strikes at his very core, keeps him focused on the future. "It's important for me to know that I'm doing my best to contribute to society, to set an example for the next generation," he says. "If we don't take that responsibility seriously, we can be set back hundreds of years." Estrada, a former scratch vocalist for the Back Street Boys and chief choreographer for 70s and 80s star Charo, says that's why he created a show like "Tortilla Heaven," which was heavily inspired by his grandmother. In "Heaven," a one-man show, Estrada portrays seven characters that cover three generations of Mexican-Americans. Estrada, who grew up in San Antonio, Texas, says his grandmother's "whole goal in life was to see us (her grandchildren) speak some kind of proper Spanish." "Heaven," a sendup that details the interaction - or lack thereof - between the generations, will be staged at the Jersey City Museum Sunday during the museum's observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, which started Saturday and ends Oct. 15. "Tortilla Heaven" is a family affair, written by Estrada's sister and directed by his brother. "I can't express how much of an honor it is to work with two people who are gobs and gobs more talented than me," Estrada, 31, says of his siblings. "They are wonderful writers. In retrospect, it makes sense that we're all writers. Our mom would virtually write a 10-page letter to tell us to go take out the trash." When asked if he considers himself a singer, dancer, actor or comedian, Estrada says he refuses to single out any of his "babies." Estrada, an openly gay man, says his appearance in Jersey City will be one of several he's made here. He headlined gay pride celebrations in Jersey City in 2002 and 2003 and hosted the event in 2004. "The folks at Jersey City Lesbian and Gay Outreach have actually become very good friends of mine," he says. "When I'm on my death bed doing my best Evita impersonation, the thing I will be most grateful for is that I have been allowed to cross paths with people who are making a difference like them." _www.getjaded.com_ (http://www.getjaded.com/) See Jade on YouTube: _http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVprQL24Umc_ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVprQL24Umc) ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com From THEMUSENYC at aol.com Fri Sep 14 08:21:26 2007 From: THEMUSENYC at aol.com (THEMUSENYC at aol.com) Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2007 09:21:26 EDT Subject: [OutVoice] National ComingOutWeek: Invitation to perform; Babylon NY 10/09 Message-ID: Hey LGBT poets, musicians, singer-songwriters & fans - this event is gonna fill up fast so am posting in advance - In Celebration of NATIONAL COMING OUT WEEK: A special edition of Rainbow Reading @ Pisces Cafe in Babylon Long Island Sponsored by PRIDE ALLIANCE OF LONG ISLAND and POETS WEAR PRADA Special guest host: ROBERT URBAN Tuesday October 9 6pm - 10pm starting with an open mic. @ Pisces Cafe 14A Railroad Avenue (at the Babylon Station of the LIRR) Babylon, New York 11702 admission: FREE! Northern Ireland's highest court overturns the anti-harassment provisions of the recently-enacted Sexual Orientation Regulations, but the European Court of Human Rights upholds the right of a Lithuanian transgender person to gender reassignment surgery, and the human rights committee of South America's Southern Common Market issues a declaration urging an end to all discrimination against sexual and gender minorities in its member nations... students at a Halifax, Nova Scotia high school respond to the bullying of a perceived-to-be-gay freshman by getting "pretty in pink"... and more GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by TANYA KANE-PARRY and RICK WATTS). * There's a silence that masks the fact that suicide is one of the major causes of death for teens and young adults... and an even more eerie silence surrounds the tragic truth that queer and questioning youth are four times more likely to take their own lives than their heterosexual counterparts. It's not their sexual orientation itself -- it's harassment by their peers and rejection by their families that drive these kids to such desperate means. One project aimed at addressing this serious problem involves the play "UGLY DUCKLINGS" by lesbian-feminist performer-director-activist CAROLYN GAGE. A production of "Ugly Ducklings" is the subject of a documentary by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Fawn Yacker. That DVD will be distributed throughout the U.S., with other educational materials, as part of an anti-harassment campaign. Gage spoke with DIXIE TREICHEL in Minneapolis on KFAI-FM?s "Fresh Fruit" program about the project, and the impact the show had when it was first produced in Maine. [www.carolyngage.com, donteraseyourqueerfuture.org, 866-4U-TREVOR] * "THE FATE OF WE'WHA" follows up on last week's profile of the Native American "princess" in another "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by TALL FEATHERS) . . . . . . 1:03 * "Tales of the City" novelist ARMISTEAD MAUPIN returns to his roots with his latest book "MICHAEL TOLLIVER LIVES," revisiting the older but hopefully wiser character affectionately known as "Mouse". Last time on "This Way Out," our JOSY CATOGGIO began a conversation with one of queerdom?s favorite writers about his new book, the unique challenges of HIV survivors, "daddies," and San Fran transfolk. The conversation continues in the second of this special 3-part feature interview with an exploration of various "family" dynamics. ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). A sassy unwed mother. A gay cable access talk show host. These were just some of the many faces brought to life by singer/comedian/activist Jade Esteban Estrada in his newest solo play, "Pico de Gallo," a humorous and eye-opening journey into modern Latino culture. Just in time for the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, Estrada presented the one-man bilingual performance Sept. 6 in White Concert Hall. First visiting Washburn University in 2005, the gay Latin star performed the award-winning solo play "Tortilla Heaven." Written by Estrada's sister Celeste Angela Estrada, it showcased the lives of three generations of a Mexican-American family. "The audience loved him, and after that initial performance, I knew that we had to have him back again," said Dona Walker, director of multicultural affairs. The multicultural department, along with the Hispanic American Leadership Organization, has sponsored both of his appearances. Since the debut of his solo show "It's Too Late? It's Already In Me" more than 10 years ago, the San Antonio native has appeared on television networks such as Comedy Central and HBO Latino while traveling across the nation to share his music and eight solo performances that shed light on issues ranging from gay rights and aids awareness to Latino culture. Walker particularly enjoyed Estrada's portrayal of flight attendant "Cynthia Camacho" who, while fluent in Spanish, hasn't spoken a word of it for three years because "they don't pay her to." "I really liked the fact that he interacted with the audience," said Walker. "They seemed to enjoy it too and it brought about other opinions and views to the issues at hand." Estrada explained that he himself did not learn or speak Spanish while growing up because it made his mother feel dirty. "After my parents split, my sister and I moved in with my grandmother and it was then that she began to teach us the language," said Estrada. He then went on to learn Spanish in school and later in life, professionally. "The more we know the better we are," said Estrada. "The more that we as a nation become globalized, the more we will have to understand the characteristics and the languages of people all around the world." Freshman Elise Richardson heard about Estrada's "Pico de Gallo" in the weeks leading up to his arrival and afterward found the show's topics and characters to be interesting. "I thought he did a very good job," said Richardson. "He talked about things that I've never even thought of in that way." Walker admired Estrada's ability to bring out the questions that society is afraid to ask and talk about. "He does it in a humorous way but the issues at hand are still serious," said Walker. While Estrada says he enjoys performing more than being about politics, he believes that sometimes the times you live in force you into the forefront of change. Estrada, who finds being a gay Latino in America to be "most rewarding," expressed that now is the time to start addressing prejudice and discrimination instead of pretending that it no longer exists. "This is an era where I believe we are ignoring the pink elephant in the room," said Estrada. "We are all prejudiced in some way, shape or form, and it's important to talk about it, we have to learn to live together." After his performance, Estrada sat at the edge of the stage answering questions from the audience and encouraging students, regardless of their major, to step up and change the things they don't like about the country they live in. "No matter where we come from or who we are, we have to take care of the place we live," said Estrada. _www.getjaded.com_ (http://www.getjaded.com/) ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com From rwaite at twcny.rr.com Wed Sep 19 05:47:34 2007 From: rwaite at twcny.rr.com (Ronald Waite) Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2007 06:47:34 -0400 Subject: [OutVoice] warm wishes Message-ID: <002a01c7faaa$7d808ef0$8044474a@S0031675456> September 19 Happy Birthday to Tegan and Sara Quin More Birthdays at www.famousbirthdays.com "Our birthdays are feathers in the broad wing of time." ~ Jean Paul Richter From questoflifemusic at yahoo.com Wed Sep 19 22:50:28 2007 From: questoflifemusic at yahoo.com (The Quest of Life) Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2007 20:50:28 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [OutVoice] Another All Request Show, Friday, Sept. 21, 2007 Message-ID: <745728.19651.qm@web34207.mail.mud.yahoo.com> We still have room for a few more requests, so send me an email. Thousands of people are attacked every year because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and there's still no federal hate crimes law to protect them. This video is the most powerful statement I've seen on hate crimes, and I couldn't help but pass it on. I think you'll see why. http://www.hrc.org/FightHate There's a bill in the Senate right now that would address this heartbreaking problem, and we only have a few weeks until the vote. It would mean a lot to me if you could take a minute to watch the video and write your Senators, and then pass this along to five friends. I really believe none of us can sit this one out. Just go to: http://www.hrc.org/FightHate The radical right is out in force, spreading lies and flooding Congress with calls and letters against the Matthew Shepard Act. They're out-messaging us five to one. Don't leave your senators with a distorted view of their constituents' beliefs. Make sure all your friends and family see the powerful video. We're looking for people who are interested in becoming part of something bigger than themselves. It won't take more of your time than you want to give, just a commitment to be there when you say you will, ready to work with us. We'll initially tape shows monthly; we're hoping to tape shows more often as we gain experience, but we might accomplish this with multiple crews. But crew slots are limited; we can only have 5 non-Beverly residents. So don't delay, email us today with your interest in joining us for a fun & fulfilling project that you'll always be proud to have been a part of. Maryland's high court rejects marriage equality for the U.S. state's same-gender couples... new research from the Netherlands supports earlier studies in the U.S. and Canada that children raised by lesbian couples are as well-adjusted as those raised in heterosexual families... Ecuador's Defense Minister resigns after taking heat for suggesting that lesbigay military personnel who come out should be allowed to stay in the country's armed forces... a new book trumpeted by "ex-gay" Exodus International offers mixed results at best about so-called faith-based "therapy" to "cure" homosexuality (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by RICK WATTS and TANYA KANE-PARRY). * JERRY SANDERS, the Republican mayor of SAN DIEGO, this week reversed his earlier promise to veto a City Council resolution to file a friend-of-the-court brief -- joining other major California cities -- urging the state Supreme Court to open marriage to same-gender couples. In an emotional speech during which he said that his lesbian daughter deserved that right, the mayor of the country's eighth largest city told reporters that it was the right thing to do (with excerpts from Sanders' remarks, and a brief report about demonstrations this week across the state urging Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to reverse his stated plan to veto marriage equality legislation for the second time). * MIKE JONES is the masseur whose revelations about Pastor Ted Haggard brought down the evangelical clergyman. He was cast in the recent Boulder Fringe production of Brian Bauman's controversial play, "Porridge," a sexually charged anti-war cry about three gay Marines. This Way Out's CLAUDIA CRAGG [KGNU-FM/Boulder, Colorado] chats with Jones about why he decided to take to the stage, some of his other clients, and his future plans. * "MICHAEL TOLLIVER LIVES" is the good news in the title of ARMISTEAD MAUPIN's new book -- 30 years after the first installment of his fabled "Tales of the City" series. In the first two parts of JOSY CATOGGIO's feature interview with him, Maupin has talked about how his own real-life relationship with his younger partner Chris is reflected in the fictional Michael's adventures. In this week's conclusion, he discusses "open relationships," and two new characters in his "Tales" pantheon. ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). The bandmembers: Yolanda (now called Roger Mapes) on vocals, Robert Urban on vocals & guitar, Tosh Mana on bass, and Anthony Maullela on drums. Soon to be released - keep an ear out for: Singer/songwriter/guitarist/bassist DON HARVEY's upcoming new cd - "JUST HAVIN' SOME GOOD CLEAN FUN" which I had the extreme pleasure to work on as production & technical consultant. I'll wait for it's official release to review it in full - but let me say now - this album is TRUCKIN'!!! - ala Grateful Dead/Canned Heat/Hot Tuna - and every one of it's songs is loaded with queer wit and pride. This album makes u groove and it makes u grin - ear to ear! and........ We're hard at work in the Urban Productions studio creating singer/songwriter/guitarist MORRY CAMPBELL's 14 song debut cd "LONG LONG WAY HOME". Watch for the cd's prerelease Christmas single - "Frightful Weather" which in addition to Morry also features jazz keyboardist Dan Manjovi on electric piano and yours truly on percussion. luv - robert urban URBAN PRODUCTIONS, NYC www.roberturban.com www.myspace.com/roberturban founder- GAY GUITARISTS WORLDWIDE http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gayguitarists Outmusic 2006 OutMusician of the Year ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com From rwaite at twcny.rr.com Wed Sep 26 06:03:59 2007 From: rwaite at twcny.rr.com (Ronald Waite) Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 07:03:59 -0400 Subject: [OutVoice] warm wishes Message-ID: <002701c8002c$f141ee10$8044474a@S0031675456> September 26 Happy Birthday to the late Thomas Rolanti aka "Bunny Lake" (Rubberlegs) 9/26-2/25/07 More Birthdays at www.famousbirthdays.com "I'm at an age when my back goes out more than I do." ~ Phyllis Diller From RJOrich13 at aol.com Wed Sep 26 08:17:41 2007 From: RJOrich13 at aol.com (RJOrich13 at aol.com) Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 09:17:41 EDT Subject: [OutVoice] We Are Movin' On Up! We've worked for years to get this bill through both houses of Congress, and we're finally incredibly close. Now that Senate action is imminent, anti-GLBT groups are activating their misinformed grassroots base once again. Remember, they've convinced thousands that this bill will muzzle preachers and send pastors to jail for reading certain parts of the Bible. If we don't call right now, critical votes COULD BE LOST to these scare tactics. CALL BOTH YOUR SENATORS RIGHT NOW: Both Sen. Casey and Sen. Specter are already signed on as co-sponsors of the Matthew Shepard Act. You're calling to thank them for their support and encourage them to stand strong, regardless of last minute right-wing efforts leading up to the vote. (The information below pertains to Pennsylvania) otherwise see http://www.hrc.org/your_community/your_elected_officials.asp for your local officials For Sen. Casey, call (202) 224-6324. Then, for Sen. Specter, call (202) 224-4254. For each office, tell the staffer who answers: "As a constituent, and a supporter of Human Rights Campaign, I'd like to thank the Senator for supporting the Matthew Shepard Act (S. 1105). I hope the Senator's support for this important bill will stay strong until it comes up for a vote." We cannot allow our Senators to be intimidated, misled, or swayed by an extremist minority. Thank you for making your calls, and thank you for being a voice of reason today. BREAKING NEWS: Senate vote on hate crimes bill expected on Thursday September 25, 2007 Chris Johnson This afternoon, Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), one of the lead sponsors of the Senate hate crimes bill, took to the Senate floor to urge the Senate to pass the hate crimes bill (S. 1105) and for President Bush to sign the legislation into law. Earlier today, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) filed a cloture motion on the hate crimes bill, a procedural move to overcome Senator McCain's objection to bringing the amendment to the floor. Our side must achieve 60 votes on the cloture motion to win; that vote is scheduled for Thursday. The Senate should then move towards passages of the hate crimes bill as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill. Senator Kennedy's prepared statement on the Senate floor can be read here. KENNEDY ON THE MATTHEW SHEPARD ACT (As Prepared for Delivery) September 25, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE I?d like to speak for a moment regarding the Hate Crimes Amendment -- at a time when our ideals are under attack by terrorists in other lands, it is more important than ever to demonstrate that we practice what we preach, and that we are doing all we can to root out the bigotry and prejudice in our own country that leads to violence here at home. Now more than ever, we need to act against hate crimes and send a strong message here at home and around the world that we will not tolerate crimes fueled by hate. Since the September 11th attacks, we?ve seen a shameful increase in the number of hate crimes committed against Muslims, Sikhs, and Americans of Middle Eastern descent. Congress has done much to respond to the vicious attacks of September 11th. We?re doing all that we can to strengthen our defenses against hate that comes from abroad. We?ve spent billions of dollars in the War on Terrorism to ensure that international terrorist organizations such as al? Qaeda are not able to carry out attacks within the United States. There is no reason why Congress should not act to strengthen our defenses against hate that occurs here at home. In Iraq and Afghanistan, our soldiers are fighting for freedom and liberty -- they are on the front line fighting against evil and hate. We owe it to our troops to uphold those same principles here at home. Hate crimes are a form of domestic terrorism. They send the poisonous message that some Americans deserve to be victimized solely because of who they are. Like other acts of terrorism, hate crimes have an impact far greater than the impact on the individual victims. They are crimes against entire communities, against the whole nation, and against the fundamental ideals on which America was founded. They are a violation of all our country stands for. We?re united in our effort to root out the cells of hatred around the world. We should not turn a blind eye to acts of hatred and terrorism here at home. We should not shrink now from our role as the beacon of liberty to the rest of the world. The national interest in condemning bias-motivated violence in the United States is strong, and so is our interest in condemning bias-motivated violence occurring world-wide. When the Senate approves this amendment, we will send a message about freedom and equality that will resonate around the world. Mr. President, hate crimes violate everything our country stands for. They send the poisonous message that some Americans deserve to be victimized solely because of who they are. These are crimes committed against entire communities, against the nation as a whole and the very ideals on which our country was founded. The time has come to stand up for the victims of these senseless acts of violence ? victims like Matthew Shepard, for whom this bill is named, and who died a horrible death in 1998 at the hands of two men who singled him out because of his sexual orientation. Nine years after Matthew?s death ? nine years ? we still haven?t gotten it done. How long are we going to wait? Senator Smith and I urge your support of this bipartisan bill. The House has come through on their side and passed the bill. Now it?s time for the Senate to do the same. This year, we can get it done. We came close twice before. In 2000 and 2002, a majority of Senators voted to pass this legislation. In 2004, we had 65 votes for the bill and it was adopted as part of the Defense Authorization Bill. But ? that time - it was stripped out in conference. The President has threatened to veto this legislation, but we can?t let that threat stop us from doing the right thing. Let?s display the same kind of courage that came from David Ritcheson, a victim of a brutal hate crime that scarred him both physically and emotionally. This spring, David testified before the House Judiciary Committee. He courageously described the horrific attack against him the year before -- after what had been an enjoyable evening with other high school students near his home in Spring, Texas. Later in the evening however, two persons attacked him and one attempted to carve a swastika into his chest. He was viciously beaten and burned with cigarettes, while his attackers screamed terrible epithets at him. He lay unconscious on the ground for 9 hours, and remained in a coma for several weeks. After a very difficult recovery, David became a courageous and determined advocate. Tragically, though, this life-changing experience exacted its toll on David and recently, he took his own life. He had tried so hard to look forward, but he was still haunted by this brutal experience. My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to David?s family and friends coping with this tragic loss. David?s death shows us that these crimes have a profound psychological impact. We must do all we can to let victims know they are not to blame for this brutality, that their lives are equally valued. We can?t wait any longer to act. Our amendment is supported by a broad coalition of 210 law enforcement, civic, disability, religious and civil rights groups, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Anti-Defamation League, the Interfaith Alliance, the National Sheriff?s Association, the Human Rights Campaign, the National District Attorneys Association and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. All these diverse groups have come together to say now is the time for us to take action to protect our fellow citizens from the brutality of hate-motivated violence. They support this legislation, because they know it is a balanced and sensible approach that will bring greater protection to our citizens along with much needed resources to improve local and state law enforcement. Our bill corrects two major deficiencies in current law. Excessive restrictions require proof that victims were attacked because they were engaged in certain ?federally protected activities.? And the scope of the law is limited, covering hate crimes based on race, religion, or ethnic background alone. The federally protected activity requirement is outdated, unwise and unnecessary, particularly when we consider the unjust outcomes of this requirement. Hate crimes now occur in a variety of circumstances, and citizens are often targeted during routine activities that should be protected. All victims should be protected ? and it?s simply wrong that a hate crime ? like the one against David Ritcheson ? can?t be prosecuted federally because it happened in a private home. The bill also recognizes that some hate crimes are committed against people because of their sexual orientation, their gender, their gender identity, or their disability. Passing this bill will send a loud and clear message. All hate crimes will face federal prosecution. Action is long overdue. There are too many stories and too many victims. We must do all we can to end these senseless crimes, and I urge my colleagues to support cloture on this amendment and to support its passage as an amendment to the DOD authorization bill. ### Press Contact Melissa Wagoner (202) 224-2633 See:// http://kennedy.senate.gov/newsroom/press_release.cfm?id=aa771731-6107-4f08-ab6c-2c48fd81c4ab If you haven?t seen the video see: http://www.hrc.org/fighthate Yes, my Trans sisters and Trans brothers. In an historic step toward equality for GLBT Americans, the U.S. Senate voted to pass the Matthew Shepard Act, which updates and expands the federal hate crimes laws to include bias motivated violence based on a victim?s sexual orientation, gender identity, gender, and disability, and provides new resources and tools to assist local law enforcement in prosecuting vicious crimes. "For over a decade our community has worked tirelessly to ensure protections to combat violence motivated by hate and today we are the closest we have ever been to seeing that become a reality," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "Congress has taken an historic step forward and moved our country closer to the realization that all Americans, including the GLBT community, are part of the fabric of our nation. The new leadership in Congress fully understands that for too long our community has been terrorized by hate violence. And today, the US Senate has sent a clear message to every corner of our country that we will no longer turn a blind eye to anti-gay violence in America." The Senate in a bipartisan vote of 60 to 39 accepted cloture which ended debate on the bill and then moved to approve the Matthew Shepard Act by a voice vote -- attaching it as an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2008 Department of Defense Authorization bill. On May 3rd, the House of Representatives passed a companion bill, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (H.R. 1592), with a strong bipartisan margin of 237 to 180. Twenty-six state Attorneys General, including 23 from states with anti-hate crimes laws already on the books, as well as 230 law enforcement, civil rights, civic and religious organizations support the Matthew Shepard Act and the LLEHCPA because, despite progress toward equality in almost all segments of our society, hate crimes continue to spread fear and violence and local law enforcement often lack the tools and resources to prevent and prosecute them. Some of these supporting organizations include the National Sheriffs Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, 26 state attorneys general, the National District Attorneys Association, the NAACP, the Episcopal Church, the League of Women Voters, the Anti-Defamation League, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the YWCA of the USA and the United Methodist Church. The President has threatened to veto the legislation, calling it "unnecessary." According to the FBI, 25 Americans each day are victims of hate crimes?that means approximately one hate crime is committed every hour. One in six hate crimes are motivated by the victim?s sexual orientation. It?s time to update the law to protect everyone, and this year marks our best chance yet to get it done. "Hate crimes terrorize entire communities and violate America?s core democratic principles that all citizens are created equal and are afforded equal protection under the law," continued Solmonese. "On behalf of the millions of Americans who have waited too long for these critical protections, we urge President Bush to sign the bill when it arrives on his desk." The hate crimes amendment was introduced by Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR). It confers authority on the federal government to investigate and prosecute crimes committed against victims solely because of their real or perceived sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and disability when local officials are unwilling or unable to do so. It also expands existing federal hate crimes law to improve prosecution of bias-motivated crimes based on race, religious, national origin and color and provides additional resources to local law enforcement. it passed 60 -39 votes !!! Apparently, Dean and another man were found dead under suspicious circumstances which are still being investigated. (There was nothing on the news, so I got this much from friends.) I personally recall his first band "Dean and the Weenies" storming the stage during the the best New Year's Eve Party ever @ the Pyramid Club in the East Village somewhere around 1985. And he was already performing his why-the-hell-are-you-cruising-me masterpiece "F@#K OFF!" 6'6" Dean, both as performer and then promoter, did more than any single person at that time to promote LGBT Rock WHEN NO ONE ELSE WAS INTERESTED IN DOING SO. His 1,800 person per night Rock 'N' Roll Fag Bar @ The World later morphed into the regular monthly Homocorps shows @ CBGB's. His bands also changed into The Velvet Mafia. There is too much to tell about Dean for a post here, so I suggest all of you who didn't know just how important, scandalous and boundary shoving this gigantic, bald rockin' drag queen really was should do some surfing and find out. I repeat, what a terrible loss of a truly original and daring gay rocker. Zecca
