THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
Program #1,022, distributed 10/29/07
(hosted this week by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
PFLAG gets religion at its annual conference;
A Latino parents study examines communication about anti-LGBT bullying;
Euro-activists brave bombs and blockades in Lithuania, Lambda Istanbul
fights the law for its life, national elections oust Poland's anti-
queer government, Dumbledore's "outing" vexes witch-hunters, lesbigay's
okay with Vietnamese students, and more global GLBT news
* In "NewsWrap": European LGBT activists overcome noxious smoke and
government roadblocks to confer in Vilnius, Lithuania, while Istanbul authorities try
to close down Turkey's leading queer rights group... Poland's
rabidly-homophobic rightwing government is ousted by more moderate parties in national
elections... both the UK and New Zealand issue same-gender union statistics... "Harry
Potter" author JK Rowling defends her "outing" of Hogwarts headmaster Albus
Dumbledore... a Vietnamese newspaper calls Ho Chi Minh City young peoples'
overwhelming acceptance of gays and lesbians "startling"... and other GLBT news
from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by SHERI
LUNN and RICK WATTS).
* The nonprofit national organization MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA has released a
new study called “WHAT DOES GAY MEAN?: A SURVEY OF LATINO PARENTS' PERSPECTIVES
ON BULLYING, SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND PREJUDICE”. Its results are both
important and in some cases contradictory. Mental Health America says one of its
goals is to help parents communicate with their children early and responsibly
to reduce anti-queer prejudice and bullying. Gay Sacramento, California-based
youth activist JESUS SANCHEZ, who grew up in South Texas, believes the
findings of Mental Health America’s survey – and the challenges it reveals about
Latino parents and LGBT kids – provide an important educational
tool[www.mentalhealthamerica.net/go/surveys].
* PARENTS, FAMILIES, AND FRIENDS OF LESBIANS AND GAYS has primarily been a
support group for the relatives of queer folk, and a strong ally in the
political struggle for LGBT equality. Now P-FLAG is stepping outside its comfort
zone to make its presence known in the pews of religious institutions. This Way
Out correspondent SUSAN GAGE found out about the new initiative at the group’
s recent annual conference outside Washington, DC (with comments by Akron,
Ohio dad and RABBI DAVID HOROWITZ, PFLAG President JOHN CEPEK, openly gay U.S.
Episcopal BISHOP V. GENE ROBINSON, and “Silent Lives: How High A Price?” author
SARA BOESSER) [www.pflag.org].
