                    ========================================
                              THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
                 Program #1,025, distributed 11/19/07
(hosted this week by Lucia Chappelle and produced with Greg Gordon)
              The origins of Anglican angst: November 2003;
Thumbs are up and down on Iranian executions, Nicaragua decriminalizes
homosexual sex, Norway's Lutherans ease their ban on partnered lesbigay
clergy, a Jamaican gay man wins U.S. asylum while an Algerian
transsexual finds refuge in Spain, the only gay bar in Jerusalem shuts
its doors, and more global GLBT news

* In "NewsWrap": An Iranian politician "justifies" the executions of LGBT
people in his country, but the Islamic nation's Chief Justice this week
reportedly halts the imminent hanging of yet another gay man... Nicaragua repeals its
law against consensual adult same-gender sex... Norway's state Lutheran
Church relaxes its ban on partnered lesbigay clergy... a persecuted Jamaican gay
man wins asylum in the U.S., and a victimized Algerian transsexual finds refuge
in Spain, but the only gay bar in Jerusalem closes its doors... and more GLBT
news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by
TANYA KANE-PARRY and SHERI LUNN).

* Remembering "The Consecration Heard 'Round the World" four years ago this
month: Shouts of both "Hallelujah!" and "Heresy!" accompanied the historic
November 2, 2003 consecration of the REVEREND V. GENE ROBINSON as the first openly
gay bishop of the EPISCOPAL CHURCH USA. The leadership of the worldwide
Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopalians are a part, had warily anticipated
the moment with bated breath. Robinson's election in June 2002 by the
Diocese of New Hampshire and his confirmation in August at the denomination's
General Convention, and a Canadian Anglican diocese's decision to allow blessings
for same-gender couples earlier that year, sent traditionalists into a
tailspin. They warned that the gay priest's elevation to bishop in particular would
put the unity of the Communion in serious jeopardy. But Robinson firmly
resisted calls for him to step aside, and when the day arrived, three to four
thousand supporters, including some 50 bishops, gathered to witness his
consecration at the University of New Hampshire's Whittemore Center in Durham. Inside,
singing with her Exeter church's 100-voice choir, was Parents, Families and
Friends of Lesbians and Gays National Board Member PEGGY GAGE. A lifelong,
active Episcopalian, Gage described the groundbreaking event from her unique
perspective and participant's view of the proceedings for This Way Out's GREG
GORDON [includes excerpts from choral music during the ceremony and statements by
two of the people who spoke in opposition to Robinson's consecration,
REVEREND EARL FOX of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (with a response by PRESIDING BISHOP
FRANK GRISWOLD) and MEREDITH HARWOOD from St. Mark's Church in Ashland, New
Hampshire, remarks by Robinson himself -- all thanks to RAQUEL MARIA DILLON and
JON GREENBERG of New Hampshire Public Radio -- plus a brief post-consecration
comment by the Episcopal News Service's JAMES SOLHEIM, and a November 2007
"postscript"].
