THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
Program #997, distributed 05/07/07
(hosted by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
How sodomy law repeal reformed the Australian state of Tasmania;
The U.S. House loves hate crime protections;
The Euro-Court says parading with Pride is a right, Moldovan Pride-
sters defy a march ban, Thai activists seek constitutional inclusion,
new U.K. Regulations demolish discrimination, and more LGBT news
plus celebrating an earthly band of angels in a "Rainbow Minute"
* In "NewsWrap": In the first such case heard by the European Court of Human
Rights, its judges unanimously rule that Warsaw's ban on a 2005 LGBT Pride
march violated freedom of association and anti-discrimination provisions of the
European Convention on Human Rights... Moldovan organizers report two
successful and relatively-peaceful Pride actions in Chisinau, even though officials
banned a Pride march in the city... LGBT Thais are publicly campaigning for
protections in the new constitution being drafted in the wake of last September's
bloodless military coup... Singapore's founding leader and former Prime
Minister Lee Kuan Yew speaks out against his country's laws criminalizing gay sex...
laws banning sexual orientation bias in the provision of goods and services
take effect in the U.K... queer protections progress in Oregon, Colorado, and
Vermont... and other GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON and
reported this week by RICK WATTS and TANYA KANE-PARRY).
* The U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES voted on a bill this week that would
increase the ability of local law enforcement agencies to prosecute hate crimes
motivated by a victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity. KAREN MILLER of
FREE SPEECH RADIO NEWS has excerpts from the floor debate and the final tally.
* "ANGEL ACTION AS DIVINE PROTECTOR" recalls how LGBT activists shielded the
grieving family of gay-bashed murder victim Matthew Shepard from horrific
homophobes in this "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR and BILL BURNS at
the studios of WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by DUSTIN RICHARDSON).
* Ten years ago this month AUSTRALIA's last sodomy law crumbled into the sea,
clearing the way for the island state of TASMANIA to move from being the
country's most homophobic to one of its most welcoming. The sex law reform
struggle itself took a decade, and activist RODNEY CROOME of the TASMANIAN GAY &
LESBIAN RIGHTS GROUP led the charge for much of that time. When that first
legislative victory was declared in May of 1997, Croome talked with This Way Out
correspondent GREG READING about its significance, and about what he hoped would
happen next (with outro music from "Never Turning Back" by JUDY SMALL).
