THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
Program #1,003, distributed 06/18/07
(hosted by Greg Gordon and produced with Lucia Chappelle)
The performance lives and love of Lily Tomlin;
Boston's queer women coalesce with Pride;
Colombia couples score a Latin American "first," marriage equality
splits the Swedish government, Massachusetts lawmakers reject hetero
nuptial exclusivity, two dads break ground in Western Australia, Sao
Paulo is again the world's Proudest city, and more global GLBT news
* In "NewsWrap": Colombia is poised to become the first nation in Latin
America to legally recognize same-gender couples, but Sweden's coalition government
is unraveling over the Prime Minister's refusal to back legislation upgrading
"civil partnerships" to marriage... Massachusetts lawmakers reject a proposal
to put a constitutional amendment banning same-gender marriage on the
ballot... a gay couple's landmark adoption of a baby boy in Western Australia has the
country buzzing... Pride parades in San Jose and West Hollywood, California,
Calgary, Alberta, and Brisbane, Queensland, survives rock-throwing protesters
in Bucharest, Romania, and sets a new world attendance record in Sao Paulo,
Brazil... and other GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and
reported this week by CHRISTOPHER GAAL and DON LUPO).
* Just days before the state legislature voted down a threat to marriage
equality in Massachusetts, BOSTON's LGBT community celebrated Pride with a bang.
Paving the way for the mass march, at least a thousand people took to the
streets the night before for the annual DYKE MARCH. HELEN MATTHEWS, who's known
locally as "Homefries," hit the streets to talk with organizers and
participants about building community, and challenging militarism and trans-phobia.
* Why is June the traditional month of queer pride? "The Stonewall
Rebellion" answers that question in a "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR &
BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by DUSTIN RICHARDSON).
* LILY TOMLIN is one of world's foremost comediennes, with the prestigious
Mark Twain Prize for American Humor among her many honors. She's created the
ever-so-"truthful" Edith Ann, the telephone company's memorable Ernestine, and a
host of other off-beat characters during her long career on television, in
movies, and on stage. In anticipation of her Pride weekend performances June
21st and 22nd in MINNEAPOLIS, Tomlin chatted with host DIXIE TREICHEL of
KFAI-FM’s "Fresh Fruit" Collective, and members LEIGH COMBS, JOHN TOWNSEND, and
NORMAN STRIZEK.
