In March 1977, the administration of U.S. President Jimmy Carter hosted the first-ever meeting with LGBT activists at the White House. In commemoration of that event, the NATIONAL GAY AND LESBIAN TASK FORCE brought some of the participants together for a telephonic press conference to recall the experience, and assess how its impact is still being felt in today's queer politics. The conference call was moderated by current NGLTF Executive Director MATT FOREMAN, and featured comments by former Carter White House advisor MIDGE COSTANZA and her former assistant MARILYN HAFT, former U.S. Congressperson ELAINE NOBLE, the REV. TROY PERRY, and activists FRANK KAMENY, GEORGE REYA, CHARLOTTE BUNCH, and POKEY ANDERSON (edited by LUCIA CHAPPELLE). ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). NYC apperances include the Lower East Side's ROCKWOOD HALL, HELEN'S CABARET in the heart of gay Chelsea, world-famous DANNY's SKYLIGHT LOUNGE on Broadway's Restaurant Row, the Upper West Side's upscale CITRUS BAR and many "back-by-popular-demand" evenings at PENANG LOUNGE on Columbus Ave. R.U.B. has been known to feature special surprise guest performers - including some of Manhattan's most beloved singing drag queens and celebrity impersonators. At CITRUS BAR they were joined by Janis Joplin impersonator extraordinaire TRAVIS and beloved Carol Channing clone CLOVER HONEY. At a recent sold- show at Helen's Cabaret, R.U.B. first performed a special DEPECHE MODE tribute and then backed-up the unsinkable Howie V CHER for a medley of rocked-out CHER hits. It's no surprise the band is fast-becoming a favorite of LGBT pride-fests across the U.S. The four gents of R.U.B. (two are gay and two are straight) have all worked with each other before in various collaborations. Their shows - four-set long musical marathons of venerable rock hits are matched every minute by reciprocal energy from their appreciative audiences. R.U.B. - Maximum classic 80's rock & pop is: GORDON SMITH - keys/vocals; STEVE SULLIVAN - bass; ANTHONY MAULELLA - drumming; ROBERT URBAN - guitars/vocals Contact & Bookings: Urban Productions 212-932-1044 - themusenyc at aol.com ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Massachusetts lawmakers reject a proposal to put a constitutional amendment banning same-gender marriage on the ballot... a gay couple's landmark adoption of a baby boy in Western Australia has the country buzzing... Pride parades in San Jose and West Hollywood, California, Calgary, Alberta, and Brisbane, Queensland, survives rock-throwing protesters in Bucharest, Romania, and sets a new world attendance record in Sao Paulo, Brazil... and other GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by CHRISTOPHER GAAL and DON LUPO). * Just days before the state legislature voted down a threat to marriage equality in Massachusetts, BOSTON's LGBT community celebrated Pride with a bang. Paving the way for the mass march, at least a thousand people took to the streets the night before for the annual DYKE MARCH. HELEN MATTHEWS, who's known locally as "Homefries," hit the streets to talk with organizers and participants about building community, and challenging militarism and trans-phobia. * Why is June the traditional month of queer pride? "The Stonewall Rebellion" answers that question in a "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by DUSTIN RICHARDSON). * LILY TOMLIN is one of world's foremost comediennes, with the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor among her many honors. She's created the ever-so-"truthful" Edith Ann, the telephone company's memorable Ernestine, and a host of other off-beat characters during her long career on television, in movies, and on stage. In anticipation of her Pride weekend performances June 21st and 22nd in MINNEAPOLIS, Tomlin chatted with host DIXIE TREICHEL of KFAI-FM?s "Fresh Fruit" Collective, and members LEIGH COMBS, JOHN TOWNSEND, and NORMAN STRIZEK. ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). To protest these rates and encourage the millions of net radio listeners to take action and contact their Congressional representatives, a national Day of Silence will be held June 26. Webcasters across the country will observe this day of silence in a number of ways, including dedicating entire programs to the campaign to save Internet Radio and broadcasting complete silence. Message-ID: <704958.12726.qm@web55810.mail.re3.yahoo.com> :) Hi everybody and Happy Pride. Its been almost 3 years since I performed as YOLANDA and I thought it was time to check in, say hello, and tell you a little bit of what happened then and what I'm up to now. First I want to thank all of my former band mates: Robert, Anthony, Tosh, Robin, Dave, Dan, Jess and my original band from Vermont: Adam, Jon, Martha, and Eric. I also want to thank Larry Flick, Freddy Freeman, Len Rogers,Jack Chan, Hedda Lettuce,Dan Jenkins, and JD Doyle for their promotion of my work. So many people were so kind to me-if I didn't mention you by name-believe me I truly love you all and thank you from the bottom of my heart. If I ever hurt anyone's feelings along the way-I hope you will forgive me and remember the good times we had. So many events happened to me in 2005-it was a wonderful and difficult year. I was elected into the GLBT HAll of FAME thanks to so many of you my fans and friends. In fact-from 2002-05 you honored me with many awards-Outmusician of the Year, Stonewall Society Awards, Fresh Fruit Theatre awards, articles in magazines and radio interviews...you gave me so much love for my work.. and I totally appreciate all that you did for me. At the same time I was experiencing a lot of heavy stresses-extreme poverty, problems with my HIV,my record deal falling apart, and other personal problems that were taking their toll on me. Basically I was getting tired, approaching 50, and was worried about how to make a living. Lo and behold at this point comes the dramatic rescue...lol. I met the love of my life-no kidding. His name is Glen and we haven't left each others side since Thanksgiving of 2005. I decided I needed a break from performing and I put everything into developing my relationship..and it has sooooo paid off. I didn't know love could be this wonderful (sounds so corny-I know-but true). I didn't know at first that YOLANDA was over-it just has happened that way. I loved what I did, but as time went on, I felt that it was time for me to move on. I will perform again as Roger Anthony Mapes but haven't decided what that will look like yet. In the meantime,I got a day job,and I have been focusing on my artwork-creating a new group of paintings. I also created a new online gallery and have been selling my work online. I also archived sound clips and downloadable songs on myspace, and friends of mine have posted Yolanda videos on utube. So that's about it for now. All is good -just different. I would love to hear from you if you want to email rogermapes at yahoo.com. If you want to see and hear some of the stuff that I've been doing lately go to: www.rogeranthonymapes.com (click roger's paintings or yolanda) www.myspace.com/rogermapesmusic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmOIxVVf1yI http://www.youtube.com/v/SpthPbdimTs for Yolanda video. Last time on "This Way Out," brilliant character actress LILY TOMLIN chatted with host DIXIE TREICHEL and KFAI-FM/Minneapolis "Fresh Fruit" Collective members LEIGH COMBS, JOHN TOWNSEND and NORMAN STRIZEK about what inspires her many comic creations, working with famed director Robert Altman in "Nashville," and being out in pre-Ellen times. In this week's conclusion, Tomlin talks more about Altman, her comic "essence," and how her decades long creative and life partnership with Jane Wagner began. * An "INSTIGATOR OF THE STONEWALL RIOTS ? SYLVIA RIVERA" is honored in a "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by DUSTIN RICHARDSON). * The latest from a whimsical lesbian favorite (excerpts from "Back When We Had Sex" and the title track from LISA KOCH's "TALL COOL DRINK"), a dynamic duo's debut ("Money's Gone" and "It's So Bright" from COYOTE GRACE's "BOXES AND BAGS"), and songs with a "schmeer" ("Uncle Moses' Wedding Dance" and "Guys & Dolls & Bagels" from METROPOLITAN KLEZMER's "TRAVELING SHOW") spice up this month's "AUDIOFILE" (with comments by the artists, hosted by CHRIS WILSON & JD DOYLE, and written & produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM/www.audiofile.org). = artist-supplied contact info = LISA KOCH COYOTE GRACE METROPOLITAN KLEZMER Tunginchic at aol.com booking at coyotegrace.com info at metropolitanklezmer.com www.heylisa.com www.coyotegrace.com www.metropolitanklezmer.com ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.).
