It features "The Homo Song," "Angelina," and lots of other great tunes that may or may not offend your conservative parents... My new website also launched today, and you can stream the audio of the CD there right NOW if you'd like to go hear it! I'm pasting the press release for the album below - as always, I'm so appreciative of all of your support. Come play in DC sometime soon! Mara ---------- For Immediate Release: Contact: Mara Levi maralevi at gmail.com 413-265-3392 www.maralevi.com DC Resident, Smart-Pop Rocker and Out Musician, Mara Levi ( www.maralevi.com) will be releasing her new CD, "What Are You?" on March 6, 2007. Mara plays Smart Pop Music ? music that is accessible, catchy, individual and complex. Mara's second solo CD, "What Are You?" is a departure from the style of her first solo release. Intentionally eclectic, the album and its title directly confront the notion that anyone (or any music) can be easily defined, or that people should be expected to have an answer to the question, "What Are You?" Mara recorded every track on the album from her home in DC, using only instruments that she could play herself. The result is an album that sounds less like top-40 radio, and more like a reflection of Mara's varied musical interests. Many of the background vocals were arranged to mimic vocal groups from the '40s and '50s; bass parts run the gamut from simple bluegrass to actual countermelodies; improvised trumpet and vocal parts join open voicings of common chords to add elements of jazz; one song takes its structure and background vocals directly from Johannes Brahms; old and new voicings and sounds combine to give the album a complex and very human range and diversity. Mara began performing with the New York band Kid Sampson in 2000. Since the band's breakup in 2002, Mara has been performing solo and touring all over the country. Mara has lived in DC for two years now, and has become an active member of the music community there. In a review of Mara's Solo Debut CD, "Life's a Ball," Baltimore Out Loud wrote, "...the perfect pop music inside spoke to me instantly. First of all, Levi's voice is a powerful tool, her musicianship is above par, and her songwriting gifts are considerable. A combination such as that has resulted in some of the most original and admirable songs I've heard in a long time." For a sample copy of "What Are You?," for review or for interview information, please contact Mara at maralevi at gmail.com or 413-265-3392. ____________________________________________________________________________________ 8:00? 8:25? 8:40? I am not one of those singers who has never done anything, but yet sings about boozing and whoring while still claiming to be a sober virgin. I've lived it all and I'm not gonna pretend... " - M. Zarne Yup... sounds like Marshall. The photo shoot for the Marhsall's CD artwork was lotsa fun, and a great story in itself: I wanted to create CD photo art that matched the musical & lyrical imagery conjured up in Marshall's confessional, demons-ridden, spooky slice of vagabond/cowboy/southern/Americana called BOOZE, SEX & THE DEVIL. So I had us trek to straight dive bars around Hells Kitchen, NYC - in the daytime - evocative with that kind of harsh afternnoon light streaming in through bar windows. It's a time of day when the near-empty bars and their patrons have a certain unglamorous, dingy, lonely look. Bar drinkers at that time of day may be said to be of the "serious" variety. Marshall and I had to buy drinks at each place we went to. Most bars threw us out after only a few snapshots because my photographing angered cranky bar patrons & gruff bartenders alike. As the day progressed and we visited more and more bars. Marshall and I got progressively more drunk - and more rowdy. We got booted from bars even faster, since we now would toss some bawdy back-talk at anyone that complained about our shoot. At day's end we returned to my apartment - quite blotto'd - but with a camera full of great shots. All the CD photo art on BOOZE, SEX & THE DEVIL comes from that daylong jaunt throughout the grungy saloons of Manhattan. BOOZE, SEX & THE DEVIL - Singer/songwriter Marshall Zarne has that rare gift for taking mundane tales of everyday life and transforming them into sudden-enlightenment revelations about the dark, sorrowful heart of human existence. Having accompanied him many times life-in-concert, I can testify - when Marshall launches into one of his world-weary song-stories - you can hear a pin drop in the house. He's a kind of torch-song oracle - his emotional pain rises up from the shared world zeitgeist - and is immediately recognized as something belonging to everyone. Confrontational, queer, depressing, reclusive - he nontheless possesses the "common man" appeal of a Will Rogers or a Johnny Cash. - Robert Urban, URBAN PRODUCTIONS, NYC More at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/marshallzarne contact Marshall Zarne at: marshzarn3000 at yahoo.com From billnor at gmail.com Sun Feb 4 11:02:49 2007 From: billnor at gmail.com (Bill Northrup) Date: Sun, 4 Feb 2007 12:02:49 -0500 Subject: [OutVoice] Vote For LGBT Artists On RGIN's New Music Playoffs Message-ID: <715ea6db0702040902j44df2d13q226224db467e56b5@mail.gmail.com> For those of you that missed The Duke's New Music Playoffs internet radio show on RGIN http://loudcity.com/station/528.aspx 10 AM-Noon EST the results are in and it's time to cast your votes for this weeks polls. Israel's Interior Ministry records that country's first same-gender marriage ? although it's Canadian ? while Canadians who marry their gay or lesbian partners abroad can now sponsor their spouses' immigration, and the Canadian government protests the rejection of a Quebec LGBT group's bid for "observer status" at the United Nations... Michigan's state Court of Appeals rules that provisions of a voter-passed constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of same-gender couples negates domestic partner benefits for the partners of lesbigay government workers... U.S. Vice Presidential daughter Mary Cheney says her pregnancy is not political... and other GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON and reported this week by CHRISTOPHER GAAL and CHARLS HALL). * A new report released in the U.S. this week by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in collaboration with the National Coalition for the Homeless says between 20 and 40 percent of homeless youth are lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender, and that conflicts at home over sexual orientation or gender identity are the driving force behind these disturbing statistics. It's been estimated that about 3 to 5 percent of the U.S. population identify as gay or lesbian, so these figures are grossly disproportionate, and there's no reason to believe the situation is any better elsewhere. The report, called "LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER YOUTH: AN EPIDEMIC OF HOMELESSNESS," addresses the harassment and violence that many of these young people experience in public shelters, and the specific impact on LGBT homeless youth of federal funding for so-called faith-based service providers. Homeless young people themselves, as well as service providers in Massachusetts, Michigan and New York discussed the problems, and some of the solutions, during a teleconference this week. Among those commenting: the study's author NICHOLAS RAY of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute; MICHAEL STOOPS, Executive Director of the U.S. National Coalition for the Homeless; queer homeless youths ANGELIKA TORRES and DILO CINTRON; National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Executive Director MATT FOREMAN; COLBY BERGER of Waltham House in Waltham, Massachusetts; GRACE McCLELLAND of the Ruth Ellis Center in Detroit, Michigan; and THERESA NOLAN of Green Chimneys in New York City [www.thetaskforce.org, www.nyacyouth.org]. ****************************************************************************** ****** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). AND ANNOUNCES CD RELEASE CONCERT IN NEW YORK CITY ON MARCH 7TH REUBEN BUTCHART has arrived! ??Following the ?Come & Play? EP release, this much talked about singer songwriter is ready to unveil his sophomore album " Golden Boy."? ?Golden Boy,?? which is being released on Tuesday, February 27th 2007, includes 12 original lushly orchestrated songs including a duet with Antony of Antony & The Johnsons.?? Reuben's website www.reubenbutchart.com. and www.cdbaby.com are two outlets where the CD will be available. To celebrate Reuben's release, please join us for a one night special performance at New York City's The Cutting Room.? Details below: Wednesday, March 7th 2007 The Cutting Room 9:30pm Sharp 19 W 24th Street $10 www.thecuttingroomnyc.com Reuben Butchart (Boo-sh?rt) is a singer-songwriter whose clear and pure voice has garnered comparisons to Chet Baker and Stevie Wonder ? by turns both soothingly delicate and triumphantly powerful. ?The Advocate describes ?Reuben?s music as ?an ever-shifting landscape of breezy strings, rumbling bass lines, ivory-soul vocals, and quirky rhythms, all framing tense lyrics that seek ? and find ? the light.? ??Blending together classic American pop and 70's soul with today's avant/indie influences, Reuben shapes the singer songwriter form into a unique blend of soul-tinged chamber-pop. ?"[A]?Great voice and fine tunesmithing....the arrangements are truly hand-in-glove and proportionately faultless" raves legendary producer and arranger Van Dyke Parks. Reuben originally entered New York's downtown performance scene as pianist for Antony and the Johnsons. ?While playing with Antony, Reuben worked on his own debut album ?Dusk? with co-producer, guitarist, and bassist Steve Bagley. ?This release garnered Reuben an Outmusic award for Outstanding Debut Recording as well as features and reviews in publications around the country. Born in San Francisco, Reuben was educated in alternative public schools that focused on diversity, humanism, individuality, and creativity ? all splendid ideals of 70's San Francisco. ??He then studied composition, arranging, and the Classic texts at New York University. Reuben also immersed himself in the East Village club scene to partake in the colorful spectacle of do-it-yourself oddities and legendary avant-garde performers. These experiences have shaped Reuben's sound first hand. ?Reuben is a masterful song-writer in the tradition of Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. His voice is uncannily pure.?? - Antony of Antony & The Johnsons Reuben is available for interviews and bookings. Message-ID: <8C91D62CFB1D107-12F4-2240@WEBMAIL-DC20.sysops.aol.com> HARD NEWS OKLAHOMA CITY Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Jews, Muslims, Baptists, groundhogs ... Oh my! By JOHN ROBERTS Staff Writer Jade Esteban Estrada at the IAO next weekend. Photo by CHRISTINE CAIN-WEIDNER. February 7, 2007 Read it online: http://www.hnokc.net/specialpage.php?pageid=35 I have never been so proud of a groundhog in my life. If I lived in Pennsylvania, I would have ran to Punxsutawney and gave that little furry rodent a big hug. I am not talking about some new sub-species of bear-like homosexual; I am, of course, referring to that world famous weatherman who appears each February to see, or not see, his own shadow. My only fear is that his forecast, which predicts an early spring this year, only applies to Pennsylvania. I just don?t know if I can handle six more weeks of winter. I think it would be hard to find anyone who isn?t tired of this damned snow and ice. I can confidently say this has been one of the worst winters I can remember. The gloom and the cold just makes me want to eat large amounts of carbohydrates and crawl inside a whiskey bottle. But this year Phil?s forecast gives me some much needed hope. Of course if the little bastard is wrong, I may drive to his burrow, abduct him and ship him, along with a jar of Vaseline and some PVC pipe, to Richard Gere?s house; or perhaps some local furniture-selling celebrities. Of course the local theaters also give me hope that I can make it until the first buds of spring. Next week you can catch some unique performance fare at the IAO Gallery in Automobile Alley. Jade Esteban Estrada will bring the premiere of his controversial new solo play "Gay Christian, Gay Muslim, Gay Jew" written by award-winning playwright Jerry Rabushka to the gallery for two 8 p.m. performances Feb. 16 and 17. Admission is $10 and $5 for students at the door. Does he have a migraine? Or is he just hot? Photo by SCOTT SMITH. The play features a lesbian wedding in India, gay bar in Israel, a funeral in Brooklyn and a southern Baptist brunch that might as well be set in my Oklahoma hometown. The story follows Jake, who is run out of his church for confessing his sexuality. Santosh, a Bollywood fanatic realizes she loves the women onscreen more than the men, and just like in the movies, tries to get out of an arranged marriage. Levi, a young gay Jewish man, travels to Israel to live among his own people and free of his family's disapproval and others. Estrada is best known for his solo shows which have toured the globe over the past five years, including "Pico de Gallo," "Tortilla Heaven," " TransWorld! The Transgender History of the World" and the multiple award-winning "ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World" trilogy. On television, he appears currently on "Friday Night Lights" and has appeared on Comedy Central's "The Graham Norton Effect," "In the Life TV" and as host of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade Pageant on HBO. Playwright Rabushka performed at the IAO Gallery last year, and this play promises to be just as exciting. For more information on the play, visit www.getjaded.com. All performances will be followed by a short question and answer session. I hope to have more from Rabushka and Estrada next week, so stay tuned. We will be doing a live interview & song broadcast Sunday 2/18/07 at 6:15pm Eastern time. KUMD (http://www.kumd.org) is currently doing their pledge drive and because they support the GLBT music scene through Rainbow Connection, it would be cool if we could support them back. YOU CAN HELP in one of two ways. Make a donation/pledge at their website, mail in a pledge and/or you can simply sign up to receive their weekly newsletter. The more e-mails they have on file for people receiving their newsletter, DIRECTLY effects the flow of grant money they receive. By simply signing up for their newsletter, you are assisting them financially and HOW GREAT/EASY is that?!!! Spread the word about this great radio station that also pays to carry the vital GLBT program, This Way OUT! When the EPISCOPAL CHURCH USA made Jefferts Schorri its first female presiding bishop, her gender and her staunch support of openly gay bishop of New Hampshire Robinson did nothing to cool the rage of the conservative Anglicans threatening schism. Jefferts Schorri is in the hot seat this week at a world conference of Anglican bishops in Tanzania, where conservatives have refused to take Communion with her and are demanding that both she and the U.S. church be disciplined for elevating Robinson. The meeting may go down as the most fractious in modern Anglican history. Meanwhile, Bishop Robinson has been occupying a different kind of hot seat. As one of the stars of "For the Bible Tells Me So," a documentary about LGBT families and the impact of religion, he was among the most popular celebrities at this year's Sundance Film Festival. When you sit down and talk with him face-to-face, as This Way Out correspondent VIVIAN MARIE did, it's hard to figure out why this warm, loving man scares the vestments off his Anglican peers. It is one of 13 new Boys' Entrance songs on "Tunnelvision"- expected to drop in June. This week I was in the studio with Timmy Samuel of Starbelly Studios, working on new productions of "FLASH '07" and "Metallurgy". I laid down some pretty tough vocals, if I do say so myself. Bassist extrordinaire, David Vector will contribute one of his signature slithery snake bassline to FLASH '07, and we couldn't be more excited to hear what he comes up with. France's highest court refuses to allow a woman to adopt and be the legal co-parent of the child conceived through artificial insemination by her lesbian partner... Texas lesbians become the first foreign couple to register their "civil solidarity union" under the new law recently enacted in the Mexican state of Coahuila... and more GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by SHERI LUNN and CHARLS HALL). * On Valentine's Day, GARETH, one of the leaders of J-FLAG, the JAMAICA FORUM FOR LESBIANS, ALL-SEXUALS, AND GAYS, was shopping in a St. Andrew's Parish pharmacy when all hell broke loose. Three men of Gareth's acquaintance were followed into the store by a woman screaming anti-gay epithets, hollering that they should be killed. She soon attracted a crowd, and the men were trapped inside by a mob of over 200 crying out for blood. Meanwhile inside, Gareth was on the phone with his contacts in the New York offices of Human Rights Watch, one of the international groups that has documented homophobic violence in Jamaica. They in turn mobilized activists in Geneva and Kingston to pressure the Jamaican Commissioner of Police and local authorities to intervene. Over an hour later, as they left the store under the "protection" of the police, one of the men was hit in the head with a rock, prompting the police to fire tear gas into the crowd. All the way to the station, the police continued to heap verbal abuse on the men they had "rescued," and Gareth was beaten for objecting to their treatment. The Valentine's Day confrontation was no isolated occurrence. Incredibly, the situation is worse now than it was two years ago, when Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch brought Gareth and his J-FLAG compatriot KARLENE to the U.S. to network with LGBT activists and lobby government officials for assistance. Gareth and Karlene -- who could not then and cannot now use their last names -- talked with This Way Out's LUCIA CHAPPELLE about their organization and its dangerous mission (admin at jflag.org; RevRobertGriffin at MCCchurch.net; www.jflag.org). * A country favorite's nostalgic salute (excerpts from "Halleluia" and "Where the Heck is Hopland?" from KITTY ROSE's "LIVE AT THE RYMAN"), and two debut artists ("Marlboro Man" and "Fishnet Sailor" from ROBERT GERMAN's "SIRENS OF BROOKLYN," and "My Nitch" and "The Whole World Is Fallin' in Love" from BRIAN GLENN's "ORIGINAL INTENT") take this month's "AUDIOFILE" on a roundtrip from Nashville to New York (with comments by each artist, hosted by CHRIS WILSON and JD DOYLE, and written and produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM/www.audiofile.org). = artist contact info = KITTY ROSE ROBERT GERMAN BRIAN GLENN kitty at kittyrose.com info at robertgerman.com brian.glenn at comcast.net www.kittyrose.com www.robertgerman.com www.brianglenn.com ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Smith) Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2007 09:39:56 -0500 Subject: [OutVoice] THOMAS "BUNNY" ROLANTI Message-ID: <01d701c759b3$ff2b3bf0$6600a8c0@AltDesk> Thomas Rolanti, known to many as Bunny Lake, one third of the band Rubberlegs, passed away last night after a long fight with liver disease. He was 51. His friends and family will miss him tremendously. It's hard to believe that I've known Thomas for almost 30 years. He was one of my very first gay friends after I came out and moved to New York, in the late '70s. Anyone who knew him knows how much he loved people and what a total social butterfly he was. He could charm the pants off just about anyone, and Anthony and my other straight New Jersey friends were no exception. A lasting friendship began in 1981, when Thomas and his friend Guy started inviting me out clubbing with them. Our first real connection was a musical one in club Berlin, at the Reggae Lounge, where we danced all night to amazing underground new wave music, and where Thomas introduced me to my first love, Bob. When Bob and I moved in together and started writing electronic music and songs, Thomas was very interested in being part of the music-making process. He was a budding new wave deejay, and used to play our parties, with his two turntables on an ironing board. Bob and I both sang and played synthesizer, and Thomas became our sound shaper and mixer, quickly becoming expert at live signal processing. He played the digital delay like an instrument, adding polish and excitement to our live at-home experimentations. In two short years, thanks to his insistence on recording everything, we accumulated a large cassette library of jams and ideas that are still being developed into Rubberlegs songs. Life was often tragicomically hard for Thomas, and in 1985 we experienced his first disappearance. He was missing for almost two years, a gut-wrenching experience for all. On his return, we had the good fortune of another golden musical period in which we developed our sound even further, though we still never played outside of the apartment. Bob had a dream in which we were on tour in a big bus, with the name of the band (back then it was the "Busy Bodies") on the side. The bus was towing a small pink caboose with Thomas sitting inside, and on the side of his trailer was written "and ... BUNNY!" Thus Thomas became Bunny, and he appended the Lake surname in fondness for the 1960s Otto Preminger film "Bunny Lake is Missing." In 1990, Ms. Lake went missing again for a couple of years, and on his reappearance, we were unable to successfully resurrect the music-making process together. It was a difficult time. We lost friends and lovers to AIDS, including Bob in 1995. Thanks to Thomas's persistence, the two of us started producing Rubberlegs songs again in early 2000. We launched our first web site and posted our material on the internet, in memory of Bob. A couple of years later we were inspired by new friends in Outmusic to put together our first live performance outside of the apartment, and this began an amazing new era for us in which we learned how to truly be a "band." Thomas knew his way around a keyboard and could read music, but was frustrated by bad habits, ingrained in his childhood by not-so-good teachers. In fact his very first instrument had been the accordion (as in the Gary Larson cartoon "welcome to heaven, here's your harp / welcome to hell, here's your accordion!"). So Thomas became my first and only pupil, and we've spent the last few years in a fascinating process of discovery, finding root causes of his performance dysfunctions and ways to work around them. It sounds like therapy, and in fact many of our discoveries triggered epiphanies in his real therapy sessions. We both learned a tremendous amount from this break-it-down-to-basics period, and were able to make Rubberlegs come alive again, in an entirely new way. Thomas suffered from recurring bouts of pathological fears, which would cause life to come to a screeching halt every few years. And yet he managed during his best times to put himself out there and push his boundaries, and I feel very honored to have been allowed to help him work through performance anxieties, so symbolic of all his fears. I know that Thomas felt most alive when he was immersed in music, and there is no question that from day one he has given me some of my most alive musical moments, all the more special for being shared with him. We spoke the same language, a language that is not often spoken or understood these days, and I've lost my musical soul brother. Peace, Gordon --------------------------------- Gordon P. Message-ID: <884905.40001.qm@web55015.mail.re4.yahoo.com> I met Bunny through Gordon Smith after coming to support Gordon/Rubberlegs at a gig in 2002. I have been lucky to share the stage with Rubberlegs on some wonderful occasions. Bunny was always very supportive, happy, and well, radiant. He was in his element, that of music, and always had a glow, an energy or vitality that was very contagious. I am deeply saddened by his passing and the loss of his presence in the GLBT music community will sting for quite sometime. Bunny was very supportive of my music and my (lyric) writing, so this is for Bunny...I/We miss you! Yours was a generous smile And your arms always open wide Filled with a music Whose rhythms you did ride Always supportive & sincere A true rare gentle man Now called home to rock In Heaven's greatest celestial band Though brief our encounters And moments equally too few I felt a special connection I found a new friend when I met you The people you have touched In your own special way Are missing you so much Each second of each minute of each and every day Tears roll down as memories unlock and begin to rewind To moments and words shared with many That were gracious, honest, & kind Too often we get lost in the pursuit of the dream To stop and take in scene after scene But you were of each moment from beginning to end Even at the expense of worrying your closest friend Now we feel your absence and it's sadness that we fight We hold you close in thought, because you are now out of sight We will draw memories close so you are truly never far Bunny, we gaze up, remember, love and lift As we look to you, Heaven's newest star Shine on... -TC From qear1 at comcast.net Tue Feb 27 18:02:50 2007 From: qear1 at comcast.net (qear1 at comcast.net) Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2007 00:02:50 +0000 Subject: [OutVoice] METALLURGY- the newest song from Boys' Entrance Message-ID: <022820070002.27560.45E4C6AA0004CDCA00006BA82216549976CE9D0E0A9E@comcast.net> Check it out, fresh out of the ovens at Starbelly Studios: METALLURGY.
