Message-ID: <000f01c7d517$2db68950$6501a8c0@D8LLQDC1> Hi all, As many of you know, thanks for the wonderful messages, health has slowed me down a bit for a little while. Actually what it really has done is required a more "away from the PC" schedule. My apologies for the delay in getting this chart posted. Also to those waiting on my return emails, will be answering soon. According to the experts my schedule will remain hectic for a short period. Due to time needed away from the PC and involved in P.T., and some new exercise programs. These will be over the next three to four weeks. Then life should be back on my calendar. I wanted to provide a brief explanation here just as information sharing. As the list has grown, so have the questions. My goal is just to provide that information. I really hate the "get out the cheese n' crackers babe, here comes the whine." type emails. However, this information does need to be posted, and will be on all sites. A side note to those who have expressed their anger and displeasure at these postings, just don't read the updates. And on to the business at hand. What a month of voting, and a note for July, looks just as active. Lots of heavy voting in the top Ten block. Numbers 1 through 6 are extremely close and the fans are really making this bean counter earn his keep. LOL Congratulations to all artists! We welcome six new artists to the chart this month. We lost some voting persons but gained in completed or more complete ballots. Remember, if you vote a complete ballot of ten then your number one choice gets ten points, then nine etc. If you vote only for the number one spot, your artist gets one point. Each ballot has a total potential ballot points of 55. Anyway, Congratulations artists! OutVoice Top 40 for June 2007 1. Nick Granato "Outside The Lines" * http://www.nickgranato.com 2. China's first gay center opens in Hong Kong... Aussie activists are charging the Howard Government with violating the country's immigration laws and breaching the UN Covenant on the Rights of the Child with proposed legislation to deny a visa to any overseas child adopted by a same-gender couple... queer advocates in Rome embrace a "Gay Street" kiss-in... and more GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by JON BEAUPRE and RICK WATTS). * "SHERYL SWOOPES SCORES AGAIN" in this "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by CHRIS DALBOM). * At 6-foot-11-inches, JOHN AMAECHI never had a problem standing out, but coming out was a bit more challenging. Born in the U.S. and raised in Britain, the now-retired National Basketball Association center made headlines earlier this year as the first male pro basketball player to tell the world about his homosexuality in his best-selling autobiography "MAN IN THE MIDDLE". In the first of a two-part conversation with "This Way Out" correspondent RALPH RADEBAUGH, Amaechi talked about his early years, his "surprising" start in basketball, and his mother's powerful example of succeeding despite adversity. He picks up the story in this conclusion with his collegiate and pro successes under the net, and his current social change agenda [www.johnamaechi.com]. * Broadway balladeer MICHAEL FEINSTEIN performs Ervin Drake's "WHO ARE THESE STRANGERS?" Drake says it's his most important song ? and he's written an impressive list of award-winning standards that include "It Was A Very Good Year," "Good Morning Heartache," and "I Believe (For Every Drop Of Rain)". ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Message-ID: Q OnStage VERSATILE JADE ESTEBAN ESTRADA CELEBRATES OUR HISTORY IN ?ICONS? by Bruce-Michael Gelbert August 7, 2007 Read it online: _http://www.qonstage.com/QOnStage_articles/Icons-Gelbert/art_tpl_w-437.html_ (http://www.qonstage.com/QOnStage_articles/Icons-Gelbert/art_tpl_w-437.html) FIRE ISLAND - Versatile and talented playwright, singer, choreographer, dancer and raconteur Jade Esteban Estrada brought his celebratory and political solo musical comedy "ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 1" to the Community House, under the aegis of the Arts Project of Cherry Grove, for two performances on August 4. Jade has also completed Volume 2 and Volume 3 and someday, with luck, we'll get to experience those as well. Jeff Wills directed; Matt Baney and Alison Brackman were responsible for sound and lights; and Sherri Rase was stage manager. Playing Sappho, "the first lesbian," in a white robe, curly wig, and assorted leaves, Jade offered a gently sung and danced ode to "the greatest female poet of the Classical age" ("Plato called me the tenth muse"). This Sappho punned on the words lyre and liar and wondered why we put ours in the White House; looked ahead to the Middle Ages, when the church leveled first allegations of homosexuality against heretics-including "my girl" Joan of Arc-and burned them at the stake; and explained the terms "bugger," derived from Bulgarian, and "crime against Nature," formulated by Thomas Aquinas. Jade's Sappho morphed into Michelangelo Buonarotti, who wants to "kiss all the boys" and "paint the Sistine Chapel" as well ("I believe that mankind is beautiful in all forms-and that is the word of God"), and heralded the Renaissance in a rock power ballad, with baroque musical overtones ("I want to sculpt humanity/I want to paint life's destiny"). As Michelangelo, Jade informed us that, while Japan reveled in the publication of "Comrade Loves of the Samurai," gay lovers were being executed in Prussia. Jade's Michelangelo took us up to the Victorian Age in England and left us in the hands of his flamboyant Oscar Wilde, an "in your face" "superstar," in a black suit, cape and top hat, with long hair and a walking stick, telling a tale of life "On the Wilde Side" in a music hall-cum-rap-style song and dance. Jade forsook Wilde's dandified finery to become an aged, dour Gertrude Stein, equally sure of her genius and her love for Alice B. Toklas, and noting that the publication of her "Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" and her departure from France for a lecture tour of America took place at about the same time as the rise of Hitler in Germany and introduction of the pink triangle to identify gay prisoners in the concentration camps. Jade's Stein turned her deathbed statement, "What is the answer? Well in that case, what is the question?" into a sensitive, moving love song that asked, "What is the answer, my Alice? What is the question, my dear?" and juxtaposed the tender intimacy of their love with the tragic chaos, violence and destruction engendered by the Nazis. Jade shed Stein's understated black to don high heels, a glitzy red and green outfit leaving the midriff bare, a headband, hoop earrings, and rainbow bandanna at the bosom to celebrate Sylvia Rivera, "Street Transvestite Action Revolutionary-a STAR!" of the Stonewall Rebellion, as she declared in a proud rock number. Sylvia's sister Marsha P. (for "Pay it no mind") Johnson put in a brief appearance here, too. The final ICON of the evening was Ellen DeGeneres, the comic who became a lesbian symbol when she and her television persona Ellen Morgan both came out. In a propulsive solo, Jade's Ellen held a coming out press conference ("Hey, hey, hey/Yep, I'm gay") and determined that she would "make the cover of Time magazine" and conquer the networks. Jade has many other LGBT historical/herstorical figures in his repertoire and the half-dozen we met in "ICONS ... Vol. 1" served to whet our appetites to see and hear the ones he treats next. _www.getjaded.com_ (http://www.getjaded.com/) ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour From RagdBlade at aol.com Fri Aug 10 00:06:11 2007 From: RagdBlade at aol.com (RagdBlade at aol.com) Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2007 01:06:11 EDT Subject: [OutVoice] Music videos anyone? We are negotiating with several male and female vocalists to sing our songs, perform in a group, and record some tracks leading to a full CD! Have not asked the question of them, are you gay? and don't intend to for that matter, because it is irrelevant other than to determine whether any of them are bashers or otherwise might not be pleasant to work with in that regard. Having said that, it will not surpise me a bit if one or more of them are, which will be nice to have brothers and sisters in the group. So wish us luck with our project, and you all will be among the first to hear us when we get our act together and take it on the road. But the Human Rights Campaign brought American politics another step into the 21st Century on August 9th with an LGBT issues forum featuring all but two of the Democratic contenders for the White House. Senators Joe Biden and Chris Dodd cited scheduling conflicts. Republican candidates were also invited, but each either declined or ignored the challenge. The 2-hour event was co-sponsored and televised live by the LOGO cable television channel. Bloomberg News commentator MARGARET CARLSON served as moderator, and each presidential hopeful in turn faced questions from a panel consisting of JONATHAN CAPEHART of the Washington Post, lesbian rock icon MELISSA ETHERIDGE, and HRC Executive Director JOE SOLMONESE. On this week?s program and "This Way Out" programs in the next two weeks, we'll highlight the responses of all six participants in this historic event, and reactions to them. "National Day of Action" demonstrations in Australia's largest cities demand marriage equality... a first-ever contingent from the Church of Sweden joins hundreds of thousands in the city's annual parade... the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America relaxes its rules on partnered lesbigay clergy, while Malaysia's first openly gay Christian minister conducts a historic queer worship service in Kuala Lumpur... and more GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by DON LUPO and JON BEAUPRE). * "BACKING GAY EQUALITY, FORMER PRESIDENT GERALD R. FORD" is remembered in this "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by JUDD PROCTOR & BRIAN BURNS at the studios of WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virginia and read by JOHN DEBOER). . . . . . . . . . 1:10 * When the Human Rights Campaign and the LOGO cable channel joined to host the first-ever nationally televised U.S. presidential forum on LGBT issues, six Democratic candidates answered the call. Before a live audience on August 9th, they tackled a wide range of issues, including HIV/AIDS and healthcare reform; national policy and legislative matters like "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the Defense of Marriage Act, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and hate crime protections; the complexities of religion and morality in politics; and the civil unions versus marriage debate. "This Way Out" aired excerpts from the remarks of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel last time. One of the other Democratic presidential hopefuls has become well known in the queer community for saying that he's "on a journey" regarding marriage equality. Panelists JONATHAN CAPEHART of the "Washington Post," lesbian rock icon MELISSA ETHERIDGE, and HRC Executive Director JOE SOLMONESE tried to map the journey of former NORTH CAROLINA SENATOR and 2004 Vice Presidential candidate JOHN EDWARDS, with the able guidance of moderator MARGARET CARLSON of Bloomberg News. First-term ILLINOIS SENATOR BARACK OBAMA is a big crowd-pleaser, but that didn't stop the forum panelists from also holding his feet to the fire on marriage equality and other key issues (this 3-part series concludes next time with Congressman Dennis Kucinich and Senator Hillary Clinton). ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). I do not have any deta ils yet, but I want to share with you the text from the description of her Outmusic Honorary Award, in 2004. She was indeed one of our pioneers. SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD 2004 Maxine Feldman The 2004 Special Recognition OMA - honoring special achievements in LGBT music - recognizes the role of MAXINE FELDMAN who is credited with writing the earliest openly lesbian song. It's called Angry Atthis. Here is a quote from her about the writing of that song: "I went to California and wrote my first lesbian song, Angry Atthis in May 1969, one month before the Stonewall riots. I wrote it in about three minutes, in a bar in L.A. Before Stonewall we had mafia-run bars where you were a fourth-or fifth-class person. It was the only place for dykes to meet; we didn't have festivals, or women's bookstores. At these bars, if you were in butch drag you could be arrested; you had to wear three "female" items by law. And be prepared for the bar raids. I didn't like the way it made me feel -- like we were useless and sick. I felt we were worth a lot more. Stonewall proved I was not alone. It was time for our protests. Angry Atthis, of course, is a play on words. I was "angry at this" lesbian oppression. My brainy girl side wanted to call my piece Sappho's Song, but then I read that Atthis was the name of one of Sappho's lovers. And Atthis began to appear to me as a better statement of all I felt. The song just spewed out of me." As she said, Feldman wrote the song in 1969, and it took another three years before it was recorded, as a 45. In those years she was OUT well before it was considered safe for a gay or lesbian artist to be performing openly. This was before Olivia Records or any of the other early openly lesbian recordings. Feldman's openness lost her bookings and she was banned from some clubs, but she never compromised her act or her music. The song Angry Atthis later appeared on an album, 1979's Closet Sale. As a performer, she was a fixture at the Michigan Women's Festival for most of the 70's, and her song Amazon became an annual theme song for the event. ******************** And, she gave me a wonderful interview in 2002, which you can hear at this link: _http://www.queermusicheritage.us/apr2002.html_ (http://www.queermusicheritage.us/apr2002.html) JD Doyle my "Queer Music Heritage" radio show site: http://www.queermusicheritage.com my Outradio site: http://www.outradio.com and co-producer of Audiofile, the monthly radio review of CDs of interest to the GLBT communities, airing on over 150 stations around the world on This Way Out. She was singing about being queer way back when no one did. I used to visit her when she lived in Boston. She'd pull out her old photos and talk about touring, the festivals, recording her first song, all kinds of stuff. I miss her. Go in peace, my friend. Message-ID: Dear Outsters-- Where the hell have I been this month? Well, I've been on the air every Saturday, thank you very much for asking. Seriously, tho, I've spent the month considering where to take this show after 9 years.. I suppose I should get the bad news over first--after all, there's some good news after that. The bad news is, after 9 years, I'm giving up the Saturday slot. There's lots of reasons for doing so, but I'll miss being part of KOOP's Saturday broadcast schedule. But it will be nice having two day weekends again.. Okay, the good news. KOOP is expanding its broadcast into an internet schedule--using our webcast for the hours that the station isn't on the air. We'll also have our second studio ready soon, so I see taking "QueerWaves" into one of these time slots. I'll be able to record more than one show at a time for broadcast (giving me at least SOME two day weekends)--and I'll ask for it to be aired during the 10pm to 6am Safe Harbor. Yeah, I know..chances are even I won't be wake at the time my show airs, but the station's working on archiving shows, so that means you'd be able to listen to "QueerWaves" anytime you want--and I wouldn't have to worry if the singer's saying "ship" or "shit".. So change is in the air..but we're still on 91.7 KOOP for at 3pm Saturdays here in Austin for the time being, and here's what you'd have heard this month.. 08/04 LAURA NYRO AND LABELLE/"Monkey Time/Dancing In The Street"/Gonna Take a Miracle DUSTY SPRINGFIELD/"Magic Garden"/The Dusty Springfield Anthology LESLEY GORE/"California Nights"/The Best of Lesley Gore: The Millennium Collection ARTHUR RUSSELL/"Let's Go Swimming (The Walter Gibbons Mix)"/The World of Arthur Russell THE B-52'S/"Rock Lobster"/Nude on the Moon: The B-52's Anthology LITTLE NELL/"Do The Swim"/Songs from the Vaults: A Collection of Rocky Horror Rarities JAYNE COUNTY/"Come On Down To My Boat"/Deviation MICHAEL HOLLAND/"Firefly IX"/Beach Toys Won't Save You 08/11 The Elvis Show--up and down the Kinsey Scale with the King JOHN CALE/"Heartbreak Hotel"/The Island Years RICHARD THOMPSON/"From Galway To Graceland"/Watching the Dark: The History of Richard Thompson EL VEZ/"Esta Bien Mamacita/En El Barrio"/How Great Thou Art EL VEZ/"Lady Stardust"/Son of a Lad from Spain..No from Mexico! Message-ID: Hello to my artist and media friends, It's been a little over two weeks now, since my partner Jeff passed away. He fought a 1 1/2 year battle against cancer and never lost hope. He was the kindest and sweetest man I've ever known, and it was an honor to be his partner for 12 years. His family, which is by the way the most wonderful one I've ever met, and I will be grieving for some time. Myself, well, I am experiencing all the aspects of being deeply sad, numb and empty, all with an unreal sense to it. Of course all I can do is just take one day at a time. I want to thank so many of you for taking the time to send emails and cards of condolence. Yes, there is indeed not much that can be said but somehow knowing there are others who care does help. As part of my self-therapy I've added a section to my website as a tribute to Jeff, my way of celebrating him and our relationship. It can be found here: _http://www.queermusicheritage.us/jeff0.html_ (http://www.queermusicheritage.us/jeff0.html) The funeral service for him was held at a chapel that was supposed to hold 250...well, it was standing room only and they asked people to sit closer, so more could get in...so gratifying. And you could feel in the room how his love for others touched so many. It was amazing. I hope all those reading this are or will be blessed with a love like that. Scott Brison becomes the first lesbigay federal politician to wed his same-gender partner since Canada established marriage equality in 2005, while openly-gay New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson tells the BBC that he plans to enter into a civil union with his partner when they become legal in his state on January 1st, sparking more anti-queer comments from Nigerian Anglican Archbishop Peter Akinola... two politicians insert feet into homophobic mouths... Tokyo queer advocates march with Pride, while Bulgarian activists promote "accurate and fair information" about GLBT people and safe sex... and more GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON, and reported this week by JON BEAUPRE and RICK WATTS). * Openly gay "BARNEY FRANK, QUICK-WITTED CONGRESSMAN" is profiled in a "RAINBOW MINUTE" (produced by Judd Proctor & Brian Burns at WRIR-FM in Richmond, Virgina and read by Virginia State Delegate Adam Ebbin). * LGBT visibility in the U.S. political process was raised to a new level with the historic presidential candidate forum hosted by the Human Rights Campaign and televised live by the LOGO cable television channel. The 2-hour event featured individual appearances by six Democratic contenders for the White House. In the first two parts of This Way Out's coverage of the forum, we?ve excerpted the remarks of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Senators Mike Gravel, John Edwards, and Barack Obama. There are two more candidates to be heard from: he's considered a long shot for his party's nomination, but Ohio Congressman DENNIS KUCINICH would be a sure bet for LGBT rights. HILLARY CLINTON is by most accounts at the front of the Democratic pack. They each faced panelists JONATHAN CAPEHART of the "Washington Post," lesbian rock icon MELISSA ETHERIDGE, HRC Executive Director JOE SOLMONESE, and moderator MARGARET CARLSON of Bloomberg News. ******************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Please tune in on Monday, September 3rd at 11:00 pm (Central) at :www.KSVR.org radio for my interview with DJ Darrol Cox. Sounds like a cool guy. New review by Gregg Shapiro of the Chicago Free Press just came out... "Originally released in 1997 as a tribute to the late and beloved Princess Diana, the song ?Flash? was Tim Cain of Boys? Entrance?s salute to the misunderstood and tragic royal figure. In honor of the 10th anniversary of her passing ?Flash? has been reissued as ?Flash ..07? (QEar Music), a seven-track maxi-single under the Boys? Entrance moniker. Timmy Samuel?s production of the track fills out the body of the tune, making it as big and bright as a barrage of paparazzi flash bulbs. Cain sings, ?Flash/ in an instant/ in a flash we?re not the same,? and that was certainly true when we lost Diana. The CD closes with a pair of versions the original ..97 track. (www.cdbaby.com/boysentrance/3)" The CDBaby price for the single was just reduced to $4.99. That is a great price for this cool, new Boys' Entrance single. Go to the address listed above, or just download at iTunes. We have a video up at You Tube courtesy of a fan named Patricia Thompson who runs the PrincessDianaRemembered.com website. It is very cool. Hilly didn't have a homophobic bone in his body and was always personally very nice to me, letting my bands record at CB's after the club closed until late the next morning. In these days of money, money, money there will never be another like him. I post a nice obit below. Love ya, Hilly, Zecca August 30, 2007 Hilly Kristal, 75, Catalyst for Punk at CBGB, Dies By BEN SISARIO Hilly Kristal, who founded CBGB, the Bowery bar that became the cradle of New York punk and art-rock in the 1970s and was the inspiration for musician-friendly rock dives around the world, died in Manhattan on Tuesday. He was 75. The cause was complications of lung cancer, his son, Dana, said yesterday. Looking more like a lumberjack than a punk rocker, with his bushy beard and ever-present flannel shirt, Mr. Kristal cut an unusual figure as the paterfamilias of the noisy downtown music scene. But for nearly 33 years his club was an incubator for generations of New York rock bands, and performing within its dank, flier-encrusted walls became a bragging right for musicians everywhere. Thousands of bands played CBGB, from its opening in December 1973 until a dispute with its landlord forced it to close last October. In the 1970s and early '80s, the bar became by default the headquarters for innovative local groups like the Ramones, Patti Smith, Blondie, Television, Talking Heads and Sonic Youth, who in the club's early days had few other places to play. "There was no real venue in 1973 for people like us," Ms. Smith said in an interview yesterday. "We didn't fit into the cabarets or the folk clubs. Hilly wanted the people that nobody else wanted. He wanted us." Hillel Kristal grew up on a farm in Hightstown, N.J., and studied classical violin as a child. He moved to New York and sang in the chorus at Radio City Music Hall and managed the Village Vanguard before he opened his Bowery bar. A lifelong lover of folk music, he kept an acoustic guitar at his desk and named the club CBGB & OMFUG, an abbreviation for the kind of music he had intended to present there: "country, bluegrass, blues and other music for uplifting gourmandizers." Within months after CBGB opened, young musicians and poets like Tom Verlaine and Ms. Smith became curious about the bar as they passed it on their way to visit the beat writer William S. Burroughs, who lived a few blocks down the Bowery. Mr. Verlaine persuaded Mr. Kristal to book his band, Television, and others followed suit, including Ms. Smith and her band, which had a seven-week residency in 1975. Record executives soon joined the neighborhood punks as habitu?s at CB's, as it was familiarly called. Mr. Kristal was quick to recognize the new scene's potential, and though he professed a cantankerous distaste for some of the music, he had a keen ear. "He might have tried to give the impression of being outside of it," said Tom Erdelyi, a k a Tommy Ramone, the Ramones' first drummer and only surviving original member. "But I don't think that was the case. He understood instinctively that what was going on was something special and important." Mr. Kristal decreed that bands had to perform original material. His policy fostered creativity, but it was also a way to avoid paying performance royalties. Mr. Kristal had other schemes. In the '70s he ran a moving company that hired some CB's regulars, and in time the club's distinctive logo became a valuable copyright to exploit for T-shirts and other memorabilia. By 2005 he was making $2 million a year through his CBGB Fashion line. As time left its mark on CBGB's walls in the form of stickers and taped-up fliers left by musicians and fans ? as well as damage to its notoriously unpleasant bathrooms ? the club's interior itself became a tourist draw, as both a relic of rock history and a kind of living museum of graffiti. Mr. Kristal, who kept office hours until the end, answering the phone "CB's" in a phlegmatic baritone, resisted any changes to the club, a narrow, dark room that still held remnants of its history as a 19th-century saloon. In the '80s and '90s, the club began presenting metal bands and especially young, hard-core punk groups in all-ages matinees. Though less celebrated than the ones in the club's 1970s glory days, these shows drew in new generations of fans. They also allowed the club to book two shows a day, one in the afternoon for fans under 21, and another at night for a drinking crowd. Critics began to complain that CBGB had lost its edge. In 2005, Mr. Kristal became embroiled in a real-estate battle with the club's landlord, the Bowery Residents' Committee, a nonprofit group that aids homeless people. The committee said that CBGB owed $75,000 in unpaid rent increases. Mr. Kristal, disputing that claim, fought the landlord in court and in the news media for months, enlisting the help of celebrities like David Byrne of Talking Heads and Steven Van Zandt of the E Street Band and "The Sopranos." At the prodding of a judge, Mr. Kristal agreed to close the club. Ms. Smith played its final show, on Oct. 15. The exterior of the club, at 315 Bowery, at Bleecker Street, is now a frequent stop on walking tours of the Lower East Side and East Village. Besides his son, of Manhattan, Mr. Kristal is survived by a daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, also of Manhattan; a former wife, Karen; and two grandchildren. Facing eviction, Mr. Kristal frequently said that he was considering reopening CBGB in Las Vegas, Tokyo or any other city that would have him. But in an interview at the club with The New York Times, as tourists walked in and out and bought T-shirts, he said that he wanted to hold onto the corner of the Bowery that he had made famous. "Millions and millions of musicians in this world think of CBGB as a home base," he said. Read it online: http://www.nola.com/lagniappe/t-p/index.ssf?/base/entertainment-0/118854073523 9140.xml&coll=1 He's a singer, with the 1998 dance hit "Reggae Twist" under his belt. He's a dancer who, for a time, choreographed camp queen Charo's stage act. And he's a comedian, who's used topical material to coax laughter from audiences across the country. But when people ask him what he does, the first answer that pops into the back of Jade Esteban Estrada's mind is "I transform." On Saturday, at the Contemporary Arts Center, Estrada will transform aplenty, from Alexander the Great to Queen Christina of Sweden, to Susan B. Anthony, to Harvey Milk, to Billie Jean King and, finally, Sept. 11 hero Mark Bingham, who helped wrestle control of Flight 93 from terrorists. Estrada's 75-minute one-man show, called "ICONS: The Lesbian and Gay History of the World, Vol. 2," is one of the highlights of DecaFest, the second annual festival of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender culture, taking place through Monday. "What I enjoy about 'ICONS 2,' is that I only mention the word gay once," said the 31-year-old San Antonio, Texas, native. ". . . These were great men and women who shaped our culture and, by the way, they were gay." Estrada hopes audiences will be amused by his depictions of homosexual heroes, but he's quick to say that he doesn't ridicule his subjects. In conversation, he describes them in loving historic detail. In Estrada's telling, Alexander may have been a world conqueror, but he understood global economics millennia before it became a buzzword. In the 17th century, Queen Christina sacrificed her personal life in order to become a monarch, then sacrificed her monarchy for her religious faith. Anthony strove for universal equality, not just women's suffrage. King used her tennis racket to battle for feminist rights in a male-dominated sports world. The jokes, he hopes, arise from the details. Considering invading Babylon, Alexander says: "We'll strike with all the might of Macedonia, and gold, silver, art, literature and really cool haircuts will pour through." When King triumphs over a male rival, she recalls that sportscaster Howard Cosell asked her: "Do you consider yourself an athlete or a woman?" "I like to go as far as I can with the meat of the dramatic situation," Estrada said by phone. "I don't let it get too heavy. I'm a comedian." Comedian or not, sometimes the situations are a bit biting. In his Harvey Milk routine, played as a George M. Cohan-esque tap dance, the San Francisco politician runs for office again and again and again, like the little train that could. Trouble is, when he's finally elected, he's assassinated for his trouble. The Harvey Milk segment of "ICONS 2" can be seen at www.youtube.com. Estrada performed "ICONS 1," featuring a different selection of homosexual heroes, at the first DecaFest last year and described the post-Katrina crowd as sophisticated and wise with, what he called, "old knowledge." "There was a lot of talk about healing," he said. "I don't have to explain anything in New Orleans, which is great, because I don't have to teach, I just have to be funny." _________________________ ICONS: THE LESBIAN AND GAY HISTORY OF THE WORLD, VOLUME 2 BY JADE ESTEBAN ESTRADA What:Performer and comedian Estrada impersonates a series of historic characters as part of DecaFest, a celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender culture that continues through Monday.
