                             THIS WAY OUT
the international gay & lesbian radio magazine
                 Program #993, distributed 04/09/07
(hosted by Lucia Chappelle and produced with Greg Gordon)
           Celebrating the 10th birthday of Ellen's "Puppy";
The force of love pushes the force of law in the Australian state of
Victoria, a New Hampshire House okay sends civil unions to the state
Senate but Alaskans vote to leave queer couples out in the cold,
Turkish students win approval for their LGBT campus club, a gay Web TV
show debuts in China while an Aussie hit-maker comes out, and more news

* In "NewsWrap": The capital city of Melbourne in the Australian state of
Victoria launches its "Relationship Declaration Registry" for queer couples with
news that a rights-giving plan may be in the works statewide... in the U.S.,
the state of New Hampshire moves closer to establishing civil unions,
Massachusetts' new governor wants to repeal the 1913 law used to bar marriage by out-
of-state lesbigay couples, but Alaska voters approve a proposal to strip
domestic partnership benefits from gay and lesbian public employees... Istanbul's
Bilgi University has Turkey's first sanctioned LGBT student organization while
the first gay-themed TV talk show to appear in China debuts online... Australian
pop star Anthony Callea comes out... and more GLBT news from around the world
(written by GREG GORDON and reported this week by RICK WATTS and SHERI LUNN).

SEGMENT #2 - The media hype and hoopla finally ended on April 30, 1997 when
"Ellen Morgan" came out of the closet on her ABC-TV sitcom. We celebrate this
month's 10th birthday of that "Puppy" episode with our report on the landmark
television event a decade ago, and some thoughts about progress since then.
Real-life lesbian ELLEN DEGENERES was interviewed by OPRAH WINFREY on her
popular TV talk show on the afternoon preceding the broadcast of the "Puppy".
You'll hear excerpts from that interview and the hour-long special "Ellen"
episode itself, along with JOHN McMULLEN's report from the sold-out auditorium
screening of "Ellen" in Birmingham, Alabama, home of the only network affiliate
refusing to carry the show (with comments by local residents DAWN McDANIEL and
KATHY BALLOU, GLAAD/D.C. staffer CATHY RENNA, and local satellite screening
organizer KEVIN SNOW); a brief clip from "Entertainment Tonight"'s report on the
stunning overnight ratings of the "Puppy" episode; and a report by CHRIS WILSON
and PAM MARSHALL from the "Ellen" celebration in West Hollywood, California
(with comments by openly-gay actor PATRICK BRISTOW - openly-gay "Evan" on the
sitcom - and viewer reaction).
