The rules have constantly changed over the years, but right now we have some leeway in what we can air. It all depends on content. One or two sensitive words in the lyrics that give an added emphasis to the meaning are ok, except I really have to think about the "f" word and the "c" word is totally out of the question. (Although I've longed to play Marianne Faithful's "Why'd Ya Do It" for years.) I know, I know, it's all very subjective and sometimes we DJs feel like censors, but the FCC's rulings are so esoteric. In spoken dialogue we subsitute "FCC" for the "f" word - as in "What the FCC were they thinking?" It gets the idea across. Years ago I spent the time to edit an early Pansy Division song by putting it on reel-to-reel, splicing out the word, turning that little piece of tape upside down and putting it back in the tape. It effectively had them singing the word backwards so the momentum of the music wasn't lost. It's the last time I did that. When Rainbow Flava came along I played most of their stuff and laid low waiting for the ceiling to crash in on me. But that didn't happen. Actually I'd rather not play music with sensitive wording in it. Over the years of having a certain freedom of words I've discovered that, for the most part, the sensitive words turn off listeners rather than attract them. I think we've dealt with it before, but it's a topic that I think everyone needs a reminder regarding.. First, to address your specific question: If you're going to bleep out "fucking," I'd say do the whole word, not just that "F-king" you hear on Morning Zoo-type shows. Those stations have a much bigger budget than the stations that are most likely to play you. Of course, I'm not refering to satellite or internet stations--as far as I know, they're not under these guidelines. Yes, it is absurd that people are fined for broadcasting language that others mutter under their breaths, shout from car windows, or speak into microphones at the state dinner table that they don't know are still on..okay, so they're not fined for THAT. So what do I do when I'm aware that a song lyric uses language some would find offensive? (I mean, other than "Republican?" ) Well, to be honest--most of the time I just sigh and say, "Can't play THAT one." Okay, what if it's a song I really REALLY WANT to play? I wish I had backward-tracking software--most of the time, tho, like JD I'll just time out that particular moment in the song and lower the volume level. Again, to be honest--that's a lot of my time spent on a particular aspect of show prep that could be used with other artists/songs/heck, whatever else I want to do in my free time, so I REALLY REALLY have to like the artist or song.. It's better if the artists can make radio clean versions of their songs available, either as mp3's or special CD singles/ep's. Or heck, just let radio folk know if there's a potential problem in one of the songs by including lyrics and/or a note regarding the word. The less time I have to spend wondering if the singer's saying "ship" or "shit," the better.. Arizona's Supreme Court rejects a challenge by queer advocates and five heterosexual senior citizen couples to the November state ballot initiative that would ban not only same gender marriage but also domestic partnerships... Alabama seems poised to have its first openly queer state legislator as Patricia Todd wins an internal Democratic Party skirmish over her official nomination... a revamp of Argentina's Military Justice Code will include lifting their ban on openly-lesbigay servicemembers... and more GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON and reported this week by RICK WATTS and TANYA KANE-PARRY). * With troops committed to conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, and with an admitted shortage of fresh recruits, the U.S. MILITARY continues to discharge lesbians and gays at the rate of two a day, according to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. Many of these booted soldiers are highly-trained experts with skills vital to the Bush Administration's so-called "war on terror." There may be a new, more dangerous show on the world stage now, but these discharges are a re-run of the experiences of lesbigay armed forces personnel during the first Iraq War, conducted by the first George Bush. Pentagon policy at that time completely banned gay or lesbian military service. More than a decade after a fledgling Democratic President Bill Clinton and an entrenched Republican Congress instituted the allegedly more compassionate "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, there remain common threads in the stories of servicemembers then and now. "This Way Out" carried the voices of GAYS AND LESBIANS INVOLVED IN THE GULF WAR DURING 1991 -- but many of these stories could be last week's news (includes the experiences of DONNA LYNN JACKSON, ERIC BARKER, and DUSTY PRUITT, and comments by former Reagan advisor LAWRENCE KORB, then-Defense Secretary DICK CHENEY, National Black Gay and Lesbian Leadership Forum leader PHILL WILSON, and AIDS Quilt founder CLEVE JONES, with music by GRAHAM NASH, MARTIN F. SWINGER and MICHAEL CALLEN). ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). I would think the first syllable gets the idea across. An actual beep would draw a strong attention to it. If the song is less of a rocker (and you are able to still edit just the vocal track) you may try just fading out the rest of the word. Since I'm just an internet station, I'd play the original during my more adult time slot which is 9pm to 5am (est) and run the edited version the rest of the day. --Joe Bear Radio ----- Original Message ----- From: To: ; Sent: Thursday, August 31, 2006 12:12 PM Subject: [OutVoice] FCC Bleeping >I am all for freedom of expression. Message-ID: <4905948c9881411b8ddcb31f7134cab0@freddyfreeman.com> I have learned so much reading the reponses. Thank you all for taking the time to enlighten me. The concensus seems to be that there are a variety of options, but as long as I am respectful to programmers and warn them that there is a song with an objectionable word they can choose to bleep it out or not play that track. In my case, the word sticks out all by itself and is EXTREMELEY easy to edit out. I will make sure when it goes out to all of you DJ's that there is a sticker attached showing the track number and counter time of the offending word , and maybe even include a radio edit. It would literally take me about 2-3 minutes to do the edit. So, thank you again everyone. Once again this is an example of why we are so lucky to have a groups like Outmusic and Outvoice, where we can give each other advice and share our expertise with others. I have been working on this album for 6 YEARS, and seen these songs go through countless incarnations of demos, and finally it goes out to the manufacturer TODAY !! So, thank you again to all of you who have been so helpful. But I wanted to ask the opinion of folks regarding some lyrics. I have a release coming out in a few months/weeks on a compilation called Beartracks 4. I am wondering what kind of reaction to expect from programmers...mostly internet and GLBT programmers. The song title is "My Penis has a Mind of It's Own." It is a jazz/blues tune that harkens back to the old blues tunes and also jazz stuff ala 'Twisted." It is supposed to be funny. People laugh. On the other hand, I have had mucho trouble over this song through the years. I was once thrown out of a NYC club for performing it. Gig Cancelled! I have also had letters and emails regarding it's content. Here's a sample of the first verse. "My Penis Has a Mind of it's Own It doesnt like to be alone! My Penis Has a Mind of it's Own I wish that I could leave it home, Oh! And just between us, Im powerless over my penis. I want to do a set with an acoustic ensemble, and I dont know if any of you are in Nashville, but I am looking for a second guitarist who can harmonize, an instrument that does the bass duty,( I am thinking cello), something to approximate keys, like accordian or melodica and a percussionist. If there is anyone out there who might be able to aprticipate or offer any leads in the Nashville area, it would be helpful. If anyone is in town, there is also room for an out of town performer to join the lineup for a short set. It's at a great club called 3rd & Lindsley. Also, I am proud to announce that my album "Break the Silence" has been shipped off to Oasis for manufacture. I plan to release it with a proper party which is tentativley scheduled for Dec 8th at 3rd & Lindsley.I will be sending out promo copies as soon as we get the CD's back from Oasis. A lot of great creative people helped make this possible including quite a few Outmusic and Outvoice members. It will be released and distributed on Woobie Bear Music. I'll make a grand announcemnet once the date is solidified, but I am just so excited that it is finnally here. Stephen Harper's push to re-open parliamentary debate on national marriage equality, while Alberta's provincial parliament rejects a bill that opponents said would have allowed job and housing discrimination against gays and lesbians... Manchester City Football Club, a top-level professional British soccer team, joins national queer advocacy group Stonewall's anti-homophobia campaign... and more GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON and reported this week by CHARLS HALL and RICK WATTS). * Many critics of the U.S. LGBT movement's current emphasis on marriage equality cite the lack of federal workplace discrimination protections as one of the other priorities they say are being forsaken. Those same two issues were vying for attention in the U.S. Senate ten years ago this month, when what started out as one bill became DOMA, the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, and ENDA, the EMPLOYMENT NON-DISCRIMINATION ACT. The arguments for and against ENDA in the Senate -- a first time ever discussion of lesbigay civil rights on the floor of either house of Congress -- sound like they could have been recorded last week. Here's how Pacifica Radio's VERNA AVERY BROWN reported the day's impassioned debate on September 6th, 1996 [featuring Senators EDWARD KENNEDY (D-MA), NANCY KASSEBAUM (R-KS), PAUL SIMON (D-IL), DON NICKLES (R-OK) and DIANNE FEINSTEIN (D-CA)]. * The last thing BRIAN SLOAN did on the evening of September 10th, 2001 was place an online ad for a roommate in the "Village Voice." Stranger than fiction, on the 12th he had a number of people calling who wanted to look at his apartment, even though few could get downtown to see it. This real life situation served as the jumping off point for his first full-length play, "WTC VIEW," which later became a movie, which became a favorite on the LGBT film festival circuit, and which is now being released on DVD and screening on U.S. cable's LOGO channel. "This Way Out's" STEVE PRIDE has preview clips, and chats with Sloan -- also the author of "A "Really Fine Prom Mess," "A Tale Of Two Summers" and the writer/director of "I Think I Do" -- about his many "views" of life after 9/11 (with music from the soundtrack, "Nicole," performed by TODD ALMOND and BILLY ALLETZHAUSER) [www.BrianSloan.com; www.StevePride.com]. ********************************************************* "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). If anyone in the NYC area would like to have the M-Audio keyboard - is yours free - just come and get it - (There's several places in NYC that service/repair synth keyboards) You can check out the M-Audio at: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/KeystationPro88-main.html URBAN PRODUCTIONS is on the Upper West Side in Manhattan - interested? email me luv robert urban From rwaite at twcny.rr.com Wed Sep 13 06:36:34 2006 From: rwaite at twcny.rr.com (Ronald Waite) Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2006 07:36:34 -0400 Subject: [OutVoice] warm wishes Message-ID: <002e01c6d728$de42a0d0$053d474a@S0031675456> September 13 Happy Birthday to Julie Clark and Happy Birthday to DARREN and Happy Birthday to Randy Jones (Village People) More Birthdays at www.famousbirthdays.com From billnor at yahoo.com Wed Sep 13 10:59:06 2006 From: billnor at yahoo.com (Bill Northrup) Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2006 08:59:06 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [OutVoice] RGIN Happenings Message-ID: <20060913155906.94777.qmail@web34403.mail.mud.yahoo.com> During the show 80's @ 8 Tuesdays 8-10 PM EST on RGIN the hosts The Duke & Viz do a contest 12 From 20. A caller calls into the station and challenges Dr. Music (Viz) in an 80's music trivia game similiar to name that tune. We would like to invite any artists to call in and participate. The artist would be given a few seconds to promote anything that they have going on and then challenge Dr. Music. If anyone is interested in this you can contact me and I will give you the details. Any artists that would like graphic artwork done can check out my partner Paige he is a freelance graphic artist, he has done work for some of the artists that I play on The Pride Showcase and you can see that work here: http://www.geocities.com/billnor/Paige/mywork.html You can also check out a few examples of other work he can do here: http://www.geocities.com/gr8heart3/examples.html and if you would like any information on pricing and availability you can contact Paige at gr8heart at gmail.com Also don't forget to cast your votes at The Duke's New Music Playoffs http://www.musicplayoffs.com/nmpcurrent.php Polls will be open all week. This is Liz's long awaited album since releasing her CD Love And War four years ago (which sold over 3000 copies independently). "Liz Clark is on the verge of breaking through the oversaturated singer-songwriter genre with her new album "Hand On the Stove" - Gunnison Times "Clark's suprisingly brawny guitar is matched by a strong, straightforward voice that's equally compelling" - Westword "Liz's latest Hand On The Stove is a great collection of accessible, catchy, clever folk/rock tunes" - Harris Radio "...honesty in Clark's songs is not a one-way street. She doesn't just offer confessionals, but is also looking for a response" - Riff Music Magazine Already a veteran at age of 24, Liz Clark has played countless venues ranging from intimate affairs at coffee shops to sold-out concert halls across the country since her thirteenth birthday. Growing up in the Rocky Mountains, she couldn?t help but absorb the bohemian folk rock aesthetic of her ?flower power? era parents and to their mild obsession with artists like Joni Mitchell and the Beatles. Liz is currently available for interviews and performance bookings. Some of us of a certain age will remember his artwork from the 70s and 80s, all the way from BLUEBOY and PLAYBOY to OMNI and TIME with cover illustrations for Penguin Books (NOCTURNES FOR THE KING OF NAPLES and SPLENDORA being a couple that come to immediate memory.) His career took an interesting twist when the emotional and spiritual crisis our community faced in the early 90s fueled his desire to bring his long held dream to life--the creation of Gene Marshall, a fictional film star from the 40s and 50s who's part toy and part art. Mel and I talked about this and her recent revamp ala Jason Wu (the wonderboy behind Integrity Toys, Fashion Royalty dolls, and the fabulous RuPaul doll) and the upcoming Gene Event taking place in Dallas in early November. Holleran is a journalist, teacher and the author of several other notable novels, but he hasn't published a new one in almost a decade. That drought has ended with the semi-autobiographical "GRIEF," about a lonely and jaded middle-aged gay professor trying to cope with many losses. Holleran recently sat down with This Way Out's BRYAN GOEBEL in San Francisco to read an excerpt, and to explain how the letters and journals of Mary Todd Lincoln and what he describes as the sepulchral city of Washington D.C. lead his protagonist to "new, poignant truths." ****************************************************************************** ************************************************** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). Just wanted to share this with you. Since the Pride In The Arts Festival here last June I have been actively working with local businesses for support of our GLBT Art community. The local statewide net information source WVAS Queer News at http://www.wvasqueernews.com has been running reviews of artists and other articles from me on discrimination. In the Entertainment section you will see a link for Up And Coming Legends, that is where your reviews have been posted. This is what the great folks at WVAS Queer News has done in support this month. Check this out and if you can drop Terry a message so that he will know his support matters. http://www.wvasqueernews.com/monthestab.html On another note, a local record store here wants to carry music of the artists in our promotions. Initially it will be consignment. I am getting the figures on consignment fees together. I am thinking that we could even use some CD's in the Pot Of Gold Promotion if you have interest. Of course I will contact each of you individually before including your CD's in an alternate program. So if you have any interest in participating in this program drop me an email. Don't forget to check out the links above. Just some updates from here. 2006 PITA Nominations will open this weekend. We got over 200 new artists from the deadline announcement! So we grow! Latvia finally complies with a European Union membership requirement to ban sexual orientation-based workplace bias... more than 100 leading writers, filmmakers, academics and journalists publish an open letter in India urging repeal of the nation's "brutal and archaic" law criminalizing consensual homosexual activity... Hong Kong's government loses its appeal of a court ruling overturning the Special Administrative Region's unequal age of consent law... the Japanese city of Miyakonojo removes specific references to gender and sexual orientation from its human rights law, but activists in Jerusalem finally get permission and set a date for the city's annual Pride parade... and other GLBT news from around the world (written by GREG GORDON and reported this week by DON LUPO and TANYA KANE-PARRY). * In the new film "RED DOORS," a Chinese-American retiree's sudden disappearance spawns life-changing events in each of his three daughters. This painfully real comedy, finally opening theatrically in the U.S., has captivated audiences, critics, and festival jurors en route to winning awards at Tribeca, Cinevegas, and Outfest. Absurdly funny and absolutely moving, says This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE, the film provides a rare view of the modern Asian American family, and includes at its center a lesbian daughter. He has preview clips featuring star MIA RIVERTON, and comments from writer/director GEORGIA LEE about making her first feature film [www.reddoorsmovie.com; www.stevepride.com]. * A prolific veteran defies description (excerpts from "Some Fine Day" and "Ten Pin" from EMBER SWIFT's "THE DIRTY PULSE"), a newcomer explores his gay identity "Cinderella's Lament" and "Selfish Song" from JEREMY HENRY's "BITTERLY EVER AFTER YOU"), and a Broadway baby sings his gospel ("Let It Sing" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from BILLY PORTER's "AT THE CORNER OF BROADWAY+SOUL") in this month's installment of the "AUDIOFILE" (with comments by each artist, hosted by CHRIS WILSON & JD DOYLE, and written and produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM). = artist contact info = EMBER SWIFT JEREMY HENRY BILLY PORTER 21950 Brodie Rd 1001 Fuller-Wise Rd #3721 PO Box 2629 Dalkeith, ON K0B 1E0 Euless, TX 76039 New York, N.Y. 10108 Canada www.jeremyhenry.com www.billyporter.com www.emberswift.com jeremydhenry at yahoo.com billy at billyporter.com ember at emberswift.com ****************************************************************************** ****** "This Way Out" is a U.S. tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the corporate name of OVERNIGHT PRODUCTIONS (INC.). "Winning the NC Songwriter's Co-op Song Contest was a much needed affirmation at just the right time in my life. It was sort of like ammunition against all those people who said, 'Jeez, the music business is really tough, etc?' I could say, 'Look what I did. The NC Songwriter's Co-op has chosen me as the best songwriter in a place full of great songwriters. People are talking about me, talking about my show. I can do this.' And I do. Up at the site currently are: "The Ballad of Freddie Mercury", ( this track has never appeared anywhere before, and is where our track, "Requiem"- originally available on "The Queer Punk Folder" cd- was taken.) "Your Secret Fear", originally recorded on the first B.E. cassette-only album, "Exit or Entrance, this is a LIVE version, previously only released on a cassette-only ep. entitled, "Underdubbed, Boys' Entrance- LIVE". It has a humorous and very familliar drum solo in the middle that is a nod to Ringo's famous solo on Abbey Road, It is guaranteed to raise a smile. Also included, "Jon-Henri Damski, (Queer Thinker, Queer Thoughts)". This track is an homage to my friend, the late Chicago activist, & poet. The audio only track will be up for a while then we will be releasing a video of the song for your viewing enjoyment later. Finally, I had to include, "Harry Hay", from "The Queer Punk Folder". If you don't know the song, check it out and learn something about queer history. Then "sing this song and spread his fame." (Harry was originally going to record the "3 questions" in my middle of the song, but after thinking it over decided not to. "I don't give a damn who knows my name as long as they fly with my ideas", said Harry in a letter to me. Darned if I know how the later can happen without the former. That is where my song comes in. Please visit www.myspace.com/boysentranceandtalltrees and download these rare tracks. They will only be available on My Space for a short while. Later on, they will be available on cds, but God only knows when. Best Wishes to All! Tim Cain/ Boys' Entrance -- "I am resplendent in divergence." - D. The first week you are up against another LGBT artist but after that week you will start to compete against other artists either in the undefeated bracket or the losers bracket depending how the voting goes. It works like a tournament with double elimination. You can check out the show at The Duke's New Music Playoffs http://www.musicplayoffs.com/nmpcurrent.php We tried this new feature on a trial basis just adding songs by LGBT artists once a month, but due to the overwhelming response 2 new songs will be added each week. I would like to get some input from the LGBT artists for submissions. If you have a song that you would like submitted for the challenge contact me.
